Measles contracted at DLR????

I just heard that on the radio. Very odd. Don't we all get immunized against that?

Yes, but there is a growing population of people who aren't immunized, and there are some instances where the immunization didn't fully work. There was recently a mumps outbreak in the NHL for the same reasons.

2 of those who came down with measles were too young to have been immunized.

Most people who opt for vaccination don't have to worry. As a PP said, though, there is a growing number who don't vaccinate and this means that (a) they have to worry more about exposure and (b) there will then be more people getting these things again as they can then spread through the unvaccinated population.

That is not an opinion on pro/con vaccination, just a clinical observation.

When I was a kid, they didn't have immunizations yet for MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) or chicken pox or many of the others they've developed since the '60s. Our parents used to put us with kids with mumps or chicken pox so we could get them early (it was usually milder if you were younger) and then be immune. Weird, huh? I had about 4 kinds of measles and don't envy those who have to deal with that. I've never had mumps, though! I was once sent home from work on a paid leave because of it when there was an outbreak of mumps.

Unfortunately, no. We're rapidly reaching the tipping point where herd immunity won't be effective because of the growing number of people who are not immunizing their kids because of rampant misinformation.

Frankly this is one of the reasons I always wonder why I see such tiny, young babies at DL! Why expose them for a couple of hours at the park?

Sadly this is very true. Not vaccinating puts infants and the elderly at more of a risk. Also, some children cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, which is why it is of utmost importance for those that can, to be vaccinated. Whooping cough is also back now. As an RN, I have watched far too many children be admitted with whooping cough and it will break your heart to watch. So sad, because it is so easily prevented. I understand a parent's choice, but I believe there is a lot of misguided information out there about vaccines. Some is just plain hysteria. Watching one child die of whooping cough is enough to change your mind. No one should have to die like that when we can prevent it. Not judging those that do not vaccinate....so don't flame me. HOWEVER, I do think we need to address the education on vaccinations more as a medical public. And that parents need ALL the information available to make informed choices.

Ok. Off soap box.

Going next month with my 6 month old. This has me worried :(

Well, I wouldn't worry about that particular instance at Disney since whoever brought it to park probably won't be there on your trip.

As for contracting Measles, it's a risk no matter where you take the baby, be it Disney or the mall. Anywhere there is a group of people there is a risk someone there will have something to spread.

I've forgotten when they give MMR now, is that the one that is given at 15 months? Or is that part of the series given at near birth?

MMR is given at 12-18 months, 4-6 years, and around Jr. High age.

No one really knows how effective the MMR remains after one reaches adulthood, too. When I was a kid, they added a 3rd jab to the schedule because there were outbreaks in vaccinated teenagers. So I kind of doubt that if 2 shots didn't work by the time I was a 12 and necessitated a 3rd, that I actually have any "immunity" left nearly 25 years later. Logically, probably not much...

That being said, we were there on the 15th and 16th ... past the incubation period ... no measles here! It'd be nice if they'd let people know WHERE in the parks they were at approximately what times...I do truly wonder if we were ever near.

I'd have to think they have no way to know where the exposure happened.

Glad your group came out symptom free.

They could let you know what park the potentially contagious people were in at approximately what times. Those who came down sick would know that much. Possibly even section of the park.

I watched my neice (age 1 year) suffer with whooping cough. I agree that it is very sad and hope that every parent who has not vaccinated his/her children will seriously reconsider.

I got pertussis 1 year after a booster shot when I was in Jr. High. They don't always work! And I would have had the DTP at least as an infant and child which was considered MORE effective than the currently used DTaP! Unfortunately DTaP is one of the least effective and wanes in a short period of time. It is also one of the immunizations with the highest rate of reactions to the vaccine itself. We're seeing pertussis outbreaks now due to vaccine failure, not the unvaxed, and the CDC has said as much. http://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/about/faqs.html So it's not so clear cut as "vaccinate and everyone will be fine". (the recent mumps cases also point to issues with current vaccines and their effectiveness).

People are the worst. Get vaccinated. Wash your hands. Stay home if you're sick. Etc. These things should be common sense (not just with things like measles but with everyday stuff like the flu) but they aren't. Someone's "fun" is more important than health.

I am not too worried about measles. I am more worried about the flu at this point.

So the only ones without an excuse about not getting vaccinated would be the two infants. And they probably wouldn't have caught it had the rest of the group who caught it been vaccinated. There is no conspiracy theory. There is no plan to control our minds through injections. They are there for our health. And when you don't get them, you put all of our health at risk.

Oh wow! I'm not vaccinated and I were in both parks 12/18 and 12/20 :o The incubation period should be over - but I'm still kind of nervous :p .... Especially because I've actually been sick with cold and flu symptoms and was diagnosed with pneumonia yesterday.
