Dear DISBoard Friends,

I have just arrived from a dream-amazing-awesome-terrific week at WDW. :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: Later on I'll post a report, but as I mentally promised myself, this is the first thing I am writing.

I had the most disgusting/terrible/vacation-threatening experience of my life, and unfortunately, it was with Mears. I am the kind of person that usually gives all kinds of services a chance, even when it goes wrong badly. But Mears did so much, on EVERY contact I had with them, that I'll have to describe it to you, my fellow DIS friends.

1 - The Arrival: My flight arrived Aug 27th @ 7:10 PM on MCO. At 7:40 I was in front of Mears check in, where a sleepy gentlemen told me to wait the next van to CBR on the exit righ in front of the desk. So far, so good. Then, 20 minutes later, the van arrived, along with its driver Patrick. This is the beginning of a nightmare. After stopping at all 4 terminals of MCO (expected), Patrick stops the van and starts to look into the map. Looks and looks. Then, he start our way to what we thought were WDW. Nope. One of the passengers was on a off-site Hotel. OK. Turns and turns gone, 30 minutes after our departure from MCO, we discovered that our driver was LOST, and couldn't find this off-site Hotel.
After what we might call a near-revolution inside the van (which was full) where some people started asking our driver if he knew where he was, and etc...he decided to take us to WDW, leaving the off-site guy for last (poor soul). We stopped at the Dolphin and THEN on CBR. My check in @ CBR was at 11:30 PM. My welcome night at WDW ruined.

2 - The shuttle to Universal - Way In: 30 minute delay, two phone calls to Mears with the same excuses.
Way out: The bus driver when we arrived at Universal said: "Mears buses and vans come to pick everybody up every hour, on the half hour". OK, this means that at 1:30, 2:30 and so on, there would be a pick up ride back to WDW, right ? WRONG.
Rain fell, we were at Hard Rock Cafe by 9:30 PM. OK, no biggie, we would take the 10:30 ride. We arrived at the mears identified spot at 10:00. At 10:30, a van arrived, and the driver, which was EXTREMELY UNPOLITE, hold a hand up to me and said "you have to wait the 10:30 bus, this is a special ride for other hotels". OK again. 10:30, 10:45, 11:00....At 11:15 (why, why didi I wait so much !) I decided to call Mears and heard that we should have RESERVED a shuttle back, and now they could send us a Van only at 12:30. Result: I had to freak out on the phone, lose all my grips, for the attendant to send me a prepaid taxi to CBR. Another 15 min wait, and I was at CBR at 12:30 AM.

3 - The Last Day: Called the day before, reserved a sit on the transfer bus to MCO. The bus was only 15 minutes delayed, no problems at this time.

After all those issues, I made a mental note to write here on DIS all my bad experiences regarding MEARS, hoping that I can help everyone on having the perfect Disney vacation.
As far as I'm concerned, Mears is not an option anymore. :earseek:

Mears has gotten worse and worse over the years. The first few times down we had wonderful drivers, decently fast service (even if we stopped at 4 or 5 places) and they were generally on time. Not so anymore. We waited at MCO for over 90 minutes for our van to OKW last December. Our return van was super-late, which made it a good thing I asked for a 3-hour early pickup.

Seems like if you have 4 or more people, most of the towncar services are similarly priced if not cheaper. Plus you get the added benefit of having only the 1 stop.

We went with Murray-Hill and is was great.
Tony, our driver went out of his way to make us comfortable and give al sorts tips !

We always book a towncar or limo. There is no way I'm being carted to every hotel in WDW until I get to my stop. I just booked Tiffany again for this trip. It will cost us $90 roundtrip to and from the Poly. Well worth the extra money. Unfortunately Mears is nothing but a cattle car. That is why they are so cheap.

Mears is cheap? I think they are expensive....especially for their lousy service.

Granted there are 10 of us, but with Mears it would cost $295!
With Tiffany Towncar (which we are using) it is $105 plus tip.

Lisa :earsboy:

Thanks for your post. I am so glad we reserved with a towncar service. Glad your trip was great!

Great post!
I just shake my head in disbelief when I hear people even thinking about using Mears.

Yes Mears is cheap when you only have a couple of people. That is why I always tell folks to use a towncar when there are more people because in the long run it is exactly how you say. We are only 3 when traveling so Mears would be a cheap alternative but there is no way I'd use them. Towncars or limos are the way to go.

It is honestly beyond me why anyone would ever use Mears. Yes, it might be a little bit cheaper if you only have a few people, but when you consider how much you are already spending on your Disney vacation, why not cough up an extra $25 or whatever so that you can get off to a great start! When we're at Disney, we want to enjoy as much magic as we can. Our vacation time is too valuable to spend time waiting on the shuttle, waiting while people get dropped off all over creation, etc. Even when it's just the two of us we always go with a town car. We did Mears once, on our very first trip, and that was enough to teach us that lesson!

For an egregiously bad experience, write later asking for a refund.

I agree and have had that experience with Cartier. They were the worse I have ever experiencde. That still doesn't stop me from using towncars though. I just went back to Tiffany which has always been wonderful. I think the problems with towncars are a lot fewer then Mears. With Mears, you pay cattle car prices and that is what you get every time.

I've used Mears twice. Both times the service was quick and friendly.

In April it only took us 50 minutes to get to Pop from MCO. This included wait time for the bus to arrive, a stop at terminal B and driving time to PC.

There's only two of us in my family, so Mears is perfect for us.

Ugh! I'm going to Orlando tomorrow for business and HAVE to use Mears. I'm not looking forward to it! I've used them in the past with no trouble, but I hate all the stops!

BF and I are getting a towncar for our trip in Dec. Which reminds me, I need to start looking into getting that booked...

They showed up fine when we used them. That's not the problem I have with them at all. I just hate the sitting in the van waiting for other passengers, squishing in like sardines, stopping at other hotels, having to be picked up way before my flight to accomodate other's schedules, etc. It's definately not something we will ever do again - whether there are two or twenty of us. We just love the personal service, grocery stop, etc. with a town car. It's SO worth it. ::yes::

boy, sorry to hear about all your delays. That is unacceptable service!

College age DD and 2 GF's are going to Disney in Jan for a week. They also want to spend a day at Universal.

We thought Mears would be the way to go since they are on a budget, but now I don't know.

herc.

I guess they're hit and miss.

When I went down last summer, I used Mears and it was cheap, easy, and fast. The driver was nice and helpful, quick in dropping people off, and I didn't have to wait but a few minutes before leaving.

but I was by myself, and getting a town car or something would have been silly.

Sorry you had such a bad exp =( I'd def send a letter letting them know how service has gone down!!

I used Mears again this year because I was meeting family already at WDW. Broken computers, surly drivers.......back to Tiffany Towncars for us! :sad2:

I an so thankful for this board! I would have never considered anything but Mears but now we have a towncar booked for this next trip!

Mears is only acceptable to me under the following conditions (and I usually take a trip like this about once a year).

I'm solo
I'm arriving at night, so I don't care too much about how long it takes.
I'm leaving on the first flight of the day (6:00 am), so I get a late check out the day before, spend the afternoon in the parks, then spend the evening and night at Pleasure Island until they kick me out at 2 am, take a bus back to my resort, request my luggage and go to the swimming pool bathhouse, then take a shower and get on Mears and sleep till I arrive at the airport.

This year I'm flying at normal hours for my solo trip, so I'll be getting two one way rentals from National. More than Mears, but less than a towncar, and I get Universal/IOA, groceries, and
Belz outlet too.
