Hello! I am traveling with my nieces next summer, and we are flying from Connecticut to Orlando. One will be 19 at the time we fly, so I’m not worried about her, but the other will be 17. What documents should I make sure I bring? Do I need anything notarized saying she is good to fly with me (we have the same last name), in case of a health emergency, etc!? Thank you!

I'd probably take her health insurance card, parents contact info, and med/allergy list.

But as far as flying no nothing is needed.

But if she does have an ID/license its always a good idea to have that type of thing on you in the real world.

I’ve traveled with my my nephew (17 now) a decent amount. Never took anything and never had any issues. When he was younger a couple times at the airport TSA had asked him who he was with before going through the scanners. He would point to me and they would just make sure we were in line together as to not get separated. Never asked for relationship.

Never worried about health situations. We did think about it, but always just figured if it was serious we would deal with it when it arose, and if it wasn’t serious we could wait to get some info first.

I’ve traveled with my kids a million times and I’ve never had to and theyve never had to produce anything when flying as long as they’re minors. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring a school ID maybe, something with a picture. I have my kids bring them, but they never need them.

I'd have the health insurance information and honestly a notarized form stating you have permission to make life or death medical decisions in case the parents can't be reached and something has to be done immediately.

This is what we do whenever our children travel with my in laws. We also do it when the kids bring a friend along on a trip of any distance, as well as when friends sleep over and their parents are going out of town. Basic forms are available online to print. If a non-parent needs to make medical decisions for a minor, official permission from the parent is needed.

I figured there were probably forms somewhere online. I just know that as much as we don't like thinking about it, there are times when even the moments spent trying to contact a parent can mean the difference between life and death. I'd hope that if you know someone well enough to take their child with you, their parents would trust you to make the call in that kind of situation.

Flown out of BDL multiple times with my grandkids, 2 of whom do not share my last name. Except for one particularly officious TSA agent in the PreCheck line at MCO who grilled my 7 year old DGD about her brothers, no one has batted an eye. If he had asked ONE MORE QUESTION, I’d have requested a supervisor. It was just ridiculous.
