MEAP testing???? when????

We booked and paid for our October trip back in April after I looked at the school calendar and it didn't have any events scheduled for October. Today my DS's 3rd grade teacher sent home a note mentioning that they are already practicing for the meap test in October. What When is the test given. I can't find a darn thing about when it is given on the school's website. We are leaving October 21, I really hope they are done by then. I haven't told the school yet, I'm betting now it's really not going to go over well.

My daughter isn't old enough for MEAP yet, but they are doing their MAP testing this month. If I remember correctly MEAP is usually completed within the first week or two of October, so you'll probably be alright.

Thanks for the link. That was the info I was looking for. DS is in 3rd grade so this is his first year for meap.

If ELA day 2 is only a one day test. We may be in the clear, because we are leaving in the afternoon that day and we will be back on the 30th which is the last make up day.

Looks like maybe we dodged a bullet on this one. I wish the school district would tell us this stuff in advance or at least put it on the school calendar.

OK we are from MI too and remember it was just a couple years ago that they started taking MEAPS in Oct. Well we had a vaction planned for then and had no idea that they would be doing testing during that time. My DD was in middle school at the time and when we returned they had her finish up the test with the school counselor during her band time. I felt really bad about it but we had no idea the testing time had changed and the school never mentioned anything to us they just had our kids finish the parts they missed after vacation.

So maybe ask school if they are missing anything if they can come in early or stay in at lunch or something to make it up? Hope everything works out well for you.

I can only speak for Brevard County, FL--east of Orlando--but our School District's master calendar is available on their website in the Winter/Spring BEFORE school starts for the year in August.

Perhaps you should check with the school and/or district about the next school year's calendar before planning an advance vacation?

As an aside, our kids missed 4 days of school due to TS Fay. The School District calendar, published LAST SPRING(!) clearly has hurricane make-up days listed. Nevertheless, many parents and teachers are up in arms about the scheduled make-up days. Petitions are being circulated, the local Teachers' Union is complaining, etc. TOO BAD!! The make-up days are on the calendar for ALL to see--and negotiated with the local Teachers' Union, as well.

Perhaps you should check with the school and/or district about the next school year's calendar before planning an advance vacation?

What are the makeup days. We missed 1 day so we do not get the Monday after Easter. On year we missed day and instead of using the intended makeup day they tacked on a day at the end of the year---we were leaving for Disney on that day.

Boy I thought I was reading my own post but I hadn't posted it yet We too are leaving Oct 21 -28 my 3rd grader will be doing MEAP. It starts around the 2nd week of Oct and goes thru the end of October. The last few days is make up. So if you are back by the 28 you should be able to make up the 2 tests your child will be missing. I was just relieved that they don't start anything new until MEAP is over So up until then it is review and prep for the test.

Our 4 make up days are: October 17--oiginally a Teacher "In Service Day;" November 11--Veterans' Day; and December 22 and 23, the first two days of Winter Break.

As I said before, these days were on the School District Calendar last SPRING, and were negotiated with and approved by the Teachers' Union.

Since they were available to ALL--parents, teachers and administrators--several months ago, there should be no whining about them.

OK just wanted to mention that most years around here there is no such thing as an advanced calendar. We like to travel in Oct too so I am often calling school the spring before to see if there is a schedule out, and there usually is not. I have even checked with friends that are teachers in the district and they do not know either until just before school starts.

Did check before scheduling, and checked again before posting this thread. October's calendar does not have MEAP scheduled on it. That's why I had such a hard time finding the MEAP dates.

wow! sounds like we are planning the same trip We are coming back on the 29th. The 30th is the last day for any make ups, so I think we'll be okay. Since DS is in 3rd grade, I think the last test for him is on the 21st. I think only 5th and 6th graders do the other 2 test, at least that's how I read the calendar..... and hoping.
I think DS can take the last test on the 21st,in the morning, before we leave. He doesn't know about the trip, so I think he'll be alright to take the test and be able to concentrate.
