Mean spirited posts

Unfortunately, sarcasm does not translate well in electronic form. Things said in a joking manner don't always come across well.

This board definitely has fewer rude posts than other boards I've been to (especially the wedding site theknot.com - they are nasty!). The only ones who really get on my nerves around here are the high-and-mighty types who hop up on their soapbox and start preaching to everyone.

For the most part, this is a pretty helpful and friendly board. Hi everybody!! (see?!)

It's funny, I've been posting on boards for many years (nearly 20, I'd guess - over 15, anyway!) I don't see any difference in the way boards are than they used to be, except that there are many more people. I hade been on the AOL Disney board (from around 1995 to 99) - and I recall a lot of us begging the moderators to stop pulling posts from the board, no matter how nasty we got. We were adults, and wanted to be treated as such. And finally, we were!

I mostly post on newsgroups - no moderation. The trolls occasionally pop in and out, but it's nice that we have the choice of how to respond to people. And at the end of the day, it works.

No matter what you do, each person is different - I don't want phony nice attitudes, or whatever...people should just be themselves, but respectfully. And very often, people say things that didn't come out the way they meant them - that is the nature of the written word. You will often meet people from various boards, and they will be nothing like what they seem like online. I have said things here (and elsewhere) that people thought was a cutting remark, when it was misunderstood. Same when I've read other comments.

If you don't like what someone says, ignore it. There are times when I wish I'd done so in the past - I'm much better now, life is just too short to worry about what some poster online says (and to try to decipher it's meaning, etc.). We only get xx amount of time on earth, and it's too precious to waste on stuff like that.

There is a "moving to Hawaii" board that is moderated so closely that people get kicked off all the time and then must pay money to get membership back. It's so often it's irritating because then, to not pay, they just join as a new member with a new name. That said, that board still has many many sarcastic, mean rude people too. And the attitude there is if you don't like it you must not have the right (correct) aloha spirit. Like some obscure definition of aloha (slanted of course to fit the person who is defining it at that moment) is always right and you are wrong.

I don't know what the answer is because kicking off everyone who expresses an opposing opinion probably really limits the exchange of information, but allowing meanness does too because it keeps people from posting out of fear.

I don't think we all need to agree, but we don't need to get pleasure from slamming and flaming back on people either.

Just my $ .02

I don't think kicking people off the forum is the right answer either. I was just suggesting that mods might want to send private messages to those that post rude/obnoxious posts reminding them that the Dis isn't supposed to be about things like that.

Sometimes a nice reminder might be all it takes. (of course I'm sure you will still have those that are rude for the sake of being rude and nothing will work, in which case one can feel sorry for them 'cause they probably have no friends in RL) :flower:

C'mon- it is kind of funny when someone asks a refillable mug / pool hopping question around here- it's kind of like being a freshman in high school and asking where the cafeteria is!

:rotfl2:

and pool hopping. Moderators please give it a sticky.

Then when someone new to the DIS boards posts a questions about refillable mugs or pool hopping the only response should be to refer them to the Sticky.

Just a suggestion! :duck:

lsteadman, you may want to present the idea to the Resort Board moderators since pool hopping and refillable mugs are Resorts questions. :)

*Cleo ducks and covers...........!* :scared1:

Can someone please create at FAQ thread for refillable mugs and pool hopping.
This will not happen. The "Boards" do not want to encourage behavior that is against WDW policy. I say who cares. Things are always discussed that are against policy (when you get down to the little things) like parking, bus riding, people not telling their kids true age when purchasing tickets, etc.

i definetly think that rude remarks arent neccesary on the boards. with that being said, i do realize that if you see 23 people a day asking the same question on 23 different threads, it does get irritating. for sarcasm, i take it lighter here because you cant really tell if its sarcasm or not because they are typing what they are typing it, not saying it.

lets all just be cool with each other! :teeth: :cool1:

Just a quick reply to the comment about 'if the boards were monitored more closely this wouldn't happen'. :)

All of the DIS moderators are volunteers. We don't get paid for this, we do it because we love the Disney experience and we want to contribute in some small way to the enjoyment others get from the Disney experience. We have full, rich, sometimes complicated lives, too. And we have jobs.

If we removed every post that offends someone there would be relatively little left.

The boards don't have to be a 'love-fest', differing opinions are important to a well rounded view, and if people think carefully about what they post and are slower to take offense, this would be a non-issue.

The DIS is a reflection of the people who post here. Ultimately, the best moderator is your own common sense.

Bravo! :)

The problem I see is when the thread changes direction to a morality debate, or an argument. The subject of the OP gets lost. I agree that people have the choice to ignore comments made, but to actually discuss the original subject, another thread will need to be started, and hope it doesn't go the same direction.

I joined a site discussing Lost- the tv show. They were incredibly rude about new members. They even had a forum for ridiculing new members. I wanted to participate in the site because I mod a Lost forum at another site, but I couldn't take the rudeness. Thank goodness DIS is kind and helpful toward new members.

It has always been this way on every board. Everywhere. I was a Room Host and a Forum moderator for AOL for 7 Years, and believe me I think I've seen it all. Thru threats, verbal abuse and yes, unbelievable as this is, virtual fist fights in the open forums. Talk about crazy...anyway -- anytime you get people together, mix with personalities, combined with the mighty pen (or in this case the mighty keyboard) Hoowah! Unlimited possibilities. Everyone -- everywhere has an opinion. Some people are good at expressing it – and some aren’t.

I think I've noticed a few folks who like to take out their big ol' spoons and stir up the trouble, but mostly everyone is nice and helpful.

Lots of members, lots of personalities -:chat:- there will be clashes sometimes, I guess.

I like the DIS...so much that my boyfriend thinks I might have a problem.
:flower:  (I'm sick today.)

Common mistakes for newbies (I hate the deregatory term NOOB, by the way) is being TOO LAZY to use the SEARCH function. But sometimes people are born or raised with NO MANNERS.

Let me get my silver spoon out of the cauldron! :earsboy:

What I don't like about some people is their flatout display of hypocrisy through their unsolicited preachings.

It may get out of hand but the Dis is nothing like some political boards I've been on or NFL boards. Trust me it can get really nasty when politics or your favorite sports team is discussed. I've ran into a few nasty posters in my time but the Dis boards is pretty tame. Sarcasm or trying to be funny at times is hard to do with a keyboard and can come off wrong. I wouldn't be concerned about it here. It's a Disney fan website and I try not to let it bother me.

You want to try some English Football team forums :crazy2:

Death Threats, Phone Numbers sent by PM to arrange real fist fights to settle arguements etc.

The stuff on here is as nice as pie in comparison.

The moralistic stuff i find quite amusing to be honest, as some people don't appear to have ever done anything wrong ever in their entire lives.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone was i believe included in some sort of important publication once!
