That's horrible! I'm amazed how much power parents had over to their kids. My two half siblings are monsters! They're so badly behaved. They talk back ALL the time. However they never speak that way to my sister or I, we don't let them get away with anything! It's amazing what a difference it makes. My stepmom likes to give the longest explanations as to why they shouldn't do something, it drives me nuts! Instead of saying "you don't speak to me that way," she says "I don't like it when you speak to me that way," hence giving them permission to talk back even if she doesn't like it.

There's probably no single answer to way kids behave badly. I'm sure some parents are to blame as well as a variety of conditions.

Here's something to consider: There's an elderly woman who lives a few house down from us who, along with her late husband, was a research chemist dealing with foods and ingredients, etc.. She claims the chemicals and preservatives in junk food that too many kids live on these days is the cause of many of their behavior problems, including ADD, and has been for many years. That might explain at least some of the problems.

so sorry all of you have had these problems. i have been going through a little bit of this...only it is DS's cousin. he is not really bratty but has a step-brother with the same name as DS and is getting the two confused. (stepbrother bullies my nephew) i have spent the last 7 years teaching DS to not hit. now i am having trouble getting him to stick up for himself. he will not hit him back.

georgeg- food allergies have been a known cause of hyperactivity in small children. red dye is a common one. for my DS it is milk! he runs nonstop after a single glass of milk!
