Anybody know if it's necessary or even advisable to wait in the room for the luggage delivery?

Absolutely not necessary....personally I wouldn't want to waste a minute of my vacation waiting on the bags....waiting sure won't make them arrive any faster....just take what you will need for the parks or the pool or wherever you want to go on arrival in your carry on's, check in and drop the carryons and head out to do whatever is on your agenda for the first day of vacation.

If anything is amiss it can always be dealt with on your return.

Normally, when having your luggage delivered by bell services, you need to be in the room in order to pay the tip.

With Magical Express, Disney takes care of the bell services gratuities, so there's no need for you to be in the room.

If you choose the use bell services when departing, the normal rules apply. Disney doesn't pay the gratuities. You are responsible.

I'm not going to the parks. I will probably get in around 7 PM and I'm planning to go off to Pleasure Island, but the next day I leave for a cruise and the bags have to be out by 8 AM for cruise pickup.

Is it advisable under those circumstances?

Your luggage should be delivered to your room some time after you check in. Even if it takes several hours (which it shouldn't, once the start-up problems are resolved), you'll have your bags the evening that you arrive.

In the extremely unlikely case that your luggage isn't be there by 8AM the next morning, I'm sure Disney would take the responsibility to get your bags to the cruise ship before she sails at 5PM.

I spoke with a family who used DME this week, the estimated time for your bags to arrive in your room is 4-6 hours after your plane lands. The family's mother arrived on a different flight from the main group and when she asked if she could just pick up her bags and put them under the bus, they assured her that it was all taken care of.

She arrived at 7pm, they called at midnight to see if she wanted her bags brought up. She chose not to have them brought up and was told that she could get them delivered the next morning after 8 am.

The main group didn't ask and they picked up their own bags and stowed them under the bus, along with several other families. They obviously did not have to wait for thier luggage.

Just an experience from the early days of the program. I think as they get more familar with the system then it will take less time.
