So we are going to use ME when we get there but are going to rent a car and drive to the beach for a couple days after WDW. can we take ME back to get the rental car without having a flight out of MCO?

Yes. I've done it. Your only issue will be timing. You could just call DME and explain the situation. Then they can give you a pick up time that gets you to mco at the correct time.
Or, you can find a flight that leaves two hrs after the time you need to be at MCO. Say you're planning on renting the car at 11:00. You could find a departing flight that leaves about 1:00. Your DME p/u time would be about 10ish. Just give DME that flight info.

If you're planning on renting with Alamo/National, you can rent from either the Dolphin resort, or the Car Care Center. The CCC is down By the Polynesian. If you let them know, in advance, they can send a car to pick you up at your resort and take you to the CCC.
If you rent from the Dolphin, you can take a bus to DHS and then either walk or boat to the Dolphin. Or bus to EPCOT, but you would have to enter the park and walk all the way to the rear.

I was at Epcot the day I wanted to pick up my rental. I walked out to the lost and found area and caught the shuttle. When I returned it they gave me a ride to the park. I just tried Hotwire, and orbitz, also using codes for Alamo and found a great rate.

I'm going to assume that you went to the Car Care Center, right? Don't want anyone confusing the two areas!!!

At the Car Care Center there is an Alamo and National Rental center. We have used them before, the shuttle came to our hotel and picked up DH, and took him to get the car . It was very easy ans quick. You should be able to find rates through their sites if you put in Lake Buena Vista as the location.

Yes it was the car care center. I think about three weeks out from the trip I got my best rate at the last minute when I wanted a second car. My son's family had their own things to do and we were off site. I wanted earlier days and some food shopping. For about a week I rented the car. Smooth transaction picking up and dropping off. There are other people on the shuttle so you may be delayed while they are dropped off before you get to the CCC. They brought the car out, made sure it was clean, showed me all the controls, gas release, wipers, emergency break release and all.
I once rented Enterprise from a hotel that picked me up at the Sports, but I really got lost getting back and also going back to drop the car. I liked the ease of CCC being right there.

When is the best time to rent a car? we will be going end of February, first of March.

Ok so our situation has changed a little we are now wanting to just rent a car for the day we arrive and return it the next night. The hours we would be picking up and dropping off are outside of ccc hrs will they still pick us up and drop off with an appointment? And if we rent from Mco can we still take me back to the resort the day after check in? This will be my first time renting a car ever let alone at Disney so this is all new to me...

No, because they will be closed and will have no shuttles running from/to the Car Care Center.

You are entitled to a trip from MCO and a trip to MCO during any given reservation. If your plans only have you going from and to MCO once, then that works. If this plan ends up with you needing two rides in a direction, it's not going to work.

As to your other question, there is no best time to book a car. Car rental prices can be all over the place, and they can change up or down on a whim. The key is to look at all of your options, choose an option that can be changed/cancelled, and book something that works for you. Then keep on checking to see if a better, more affordable, option shows up.

There should be a thread for car rentals during your travel month here in the Transportation forum, so you can see what others are getting.
