MCO to begin using the new scanners within next 2-3 weeks

Rumor around the airport is they are going to start using the new xray machines are going to be in place within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Just wanted everyone to be aware that this is coming VERY soon.

If you are talking about the body image scanners, oh goody. My local airport already has them, though I have yet to go thru them. Not a big deal to me, other than hoping they don't make the already huge lines at MCO even longer.

Makes you feel like you are under arrest a little bit, but really not so bad and didn't seem to slow down the lines (at RDU at least).
Same as going through the gate before.
You wait, they motion you to enter the "booth"
You go to the yellow feet marked on the floor and place your feet on them. The feet are perpendicular to you, so you rotate to your right 90 degrees to stand on them.
Then you take your hands up in the air and put them on the back of your head. You wait a few seconds, then they motion you out of it.

I went through one at RIC at the beginning of August. I was randomly picked from the line and did even realize what it was until they made me hold up my arms. Then I had to stand there until someone radioed back that it was OK. It was at that moment that I felt violated, knowing someone was staring at the picture while I stood there waiting.

Yeah its the full body scans...as for the article...BRAVO! Employees get treated like common criminals sometimes going through security. I will keep everyone posted when I hear anything more about MCO

Okay...I'll bite. Common criminals?? Really? I've been through a full body scanner and I didn't feel violated or like a criminal. It's not all that different than the regular security scanners. I can't understand why someone says it's 'make work' type stuff. I guess they have to have addlt personel to view the 'scans' in that secret room..but other than that, I don't see the addlt work, or time spent.

Is there a better way to do things? I just don't know. Anyone out there have any reasonable alternatives??

they have the scanners now in Buffalo and if I am not mistaken ....they did not seem to have a secret room ...as there were, what looked like, two monitors in plain view
on each scanner installation

...i did not get up close as we did not have to go through them this time ( sure we will have to later ) however, seeing what seemed like the "monitors" in plain view did not make me feel "better" about the process

if anyone has particular knowledge about the set up in Buffalo, maybe they can correct my impression of what we saw

Do they make young children go through by themselves? My little ones have NEVER flown before and one has autism, so I am wondering if it's time to start the social stories of what to do? For something as new and odd as that, my son might not follow instructions very well at the airport. I can see it now... me setting up a fake body scanner prop in the livingroom so he can "practice" what to do! lol!

You might be able to set up a time to go out to your local airport (if they have the scanners, and if there is one nearby), so that you can show it to him, and they can possibly help you to take him through a couple of times so he can begin to understand what's going on.

Also, if you have documentation from your physician, your son should be exempt and could be wanded instead (don't know if that would be any better, but its an option).

Yep, and it won't make any difference which 'type' of scanner you get. Everyone has to go through alone. As noted, you can opt out for a one on one wanding. You could be there, beside your child for that.
You may want to start a game type situation where your kids can practice going through the scanner. You can use a doorway or such.
