McGwire admits steroid use

That's just great. He can kiss the Hall of Fame goodbye.

He did that in front of Congress on March 17, 2005. He didn't deny using any performance enhancing substances, but his bumbling and evasion was as good as an admission to the baseball writers. No call from Cooperstown to this point. Apparently the Cardinals wanted him to publicly address the issue prior to his employment as a coach and he had the tact to wait a while after they announced Dawson.

I called my Dad, since he collected LOTS of rookie cards from the late 80s and 90s of superstars in hopes that they would accrue in value. He had a few of McGwire's cards and I ended up being the one to confirm the news. He lamented another set of cards that are now completely worthless and I heard him put something in the shredder. "Are you shredding his cards, Dad?????" No....but that's a good idea!" :lmao:

I`m sure he came out now so to maybe have it calmed down before spring training at his new job as hitting coach with the Cardinals

Before Congress he took the 5th and only said he was not going to talk about the past
No crime

Like all the other posters, I AM TOTALLY SHOCKED by this news.:rotfl:

This thread needs LOTS of smelling salts!

While he admitted using steroids, he continues to claim that he would have broken the home run record WITHOUT them, and that he only took the steroids for "health reasons".

THAT, in my mind, taints his whole "confession", and just does not ring true. He continues to be less than forthcoming and evasive, and is not doing himself any favors, if he ever hopes to rehabilitate his image, let alone get into the Hall of Fame.

My only shock is that he actually admitted it.

I know nothing about baseball, but I DO remember this guy setting those records awhile back. I'm not surprised in the lest that he used steroids, but it does seem odd to me that he admitted it right before he takes a job with his old team...

Plus, he keeps passively blaming his use on the "steroid era", the pressure he was under, and his injuries. I've known college football players that turned down juicing requests from their own conditioning coaches - with consequences. If a 19 year old could stand his ground, there's no reason McGwire couldn't have. Grow up!
