McDonalds to recall Shrek glasses

Reporting from Washington — McDonald's will recall about 12 million "Shrek" drinking glasses because federal regulators found they contain the toxic metal cadmium, which poses health risks.

The glasses have been sold for $2 apiece at McDonald's restaurants across the country as a promotional tie-in with the movie "Shrek Forever After." Purchasers will be advised to keep them away from children and to return them to McDonald's for a refund.

The recall, which will be officially announced Friday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, was set in motion by an anonymous tip to Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Hillsborough) last week. She alerted the commission, which tested the glasses and confirmed the presence of cadmium in the paint used for the decorative characters. Cadmium is a carcinogen and can cause kidney, lung, intestinal and bone damage.

I have been searching for her for the past 2 weeks, and am determined to get a full set - recall or not.

Hopefully it does not arrive damaged from Canada.....

Man....we really wanted these glasses but we'd purchased the ones a few years back during the other Shrek promotion so I couldn't see paying 2.00 for new ones. Wonder if the older ones are recalled.

I was just planning to head to Mcd's to see what glass they had. Just saw this week that they had them. I am very disappointed in them. I have several disney glasses from the years and I have a complete set of the smurf glasses. Oh well. Poor DD wanted the shrek as that is one of her favorite movie series!

The article implies that this is just precautionary and that levels seem low so I think that I'll keep my one glass. I'd probably feel differently if I had any kids that would use them though.

I am so bummed, I just got all 4 glasses. I still have all 4 from the last time they did shrek glasses, and wanted to have both sets.
