I’m not sure what’s happening with my McDonald’s app, but for quite a while the US version has a buy 5 get one free with any McCafe item at “regular price”. That regular price could be the $1 coffee in my region, a meal deal that includes coffee, or even senior coffee (for my dad). The freebie can be any McCafe item at any price, including large premium drinks like Frappes.

I would either pull up a code and scan it at their readers or kiosks. Online orders are automatically tallied. If I use a coupon (which uses a code) then that associates my McCafe purchases with my account.

I’ve seen some weird stuff going on, but I’m not complaining. For a couple of weeks I was registering two purchases for each one. A week ago I found I was logged out (I registered using my Google login) and when I logged back in I found four free coupons when I had one before. Also I had two purchases registered one day and the next day it was back to 0 but where I had another free coupon. Some of these were odd because I saw four on my iPhone version, but only one on my iPad version using the same account. Just today I found another one.

I haven’t deliberately hacked anything, and I’m not complaining. However, I haven’t had any of these freebies rejected at MacDonald’s. I was wondering if maybe one might get rejected or maybe disappear.

Also, I can’t quite figure out exactly how the system works since it’s just a four letter alphanumeric code that I (or the cashier) can enter manually if the QR code doesn’t scan. It must be tied to location because there’s no way that could be used nationally since that wouldn’t be an adequate identifier with millions of people using the app.

I’ve used the app deals in different regions. I originally got the app because that was the only way to take advantage of their promotion with the Golden State Warriors where they had free medium fries the day after a road win. They also had some regional specials like $1 fries once per day, any sandwich (other than premium) for $1 once per day, modified later to once per week, then eliminated. When I went to a different region (like Sacramento) I saw different coupon deals. In the Seattle area I saw buy one get one free Happy Meals which I’ve never seen in California.

The freebie coupons are kind of odd too. They say they expire, but when I didn’t use one by the expiration date, it just changed to 3 months later, so those don’t really expire.
