According to a commentary on FOX, the McCain camp was protesting that FOX News (and other news sources) were "calling" Pennsylvania a "win" for Obama so early in the results.

I don't blame him... and I think that anyone who cares about the integrity of the voting process should agree.

Earth to the McCain camp, this is the way it works and has always been done.

The voting process? The polls are closed there.

If the polls closed at 8, what's the problem? :confused3

If they start calling the BIG states early then those that are still voting in other states might not feel that they need to vote at all since Obama has it in the bag with that win. DH hadn't voted yet thanks to working late, his comment was I don't know why I'm bothering according to the news Obama has already won it.

Excellent point, it should be regulated to avoid declaring projections until all the polls close.

I don't think they should call a state either way before all the precincts or the majority of the precincts in that state have reported. I just don't understand how they can call a state when less then 50% of the precincts in the state have reported.

It's not over until it's officially over. They're making predictions with only a fraction of the precincts already having reported their votes.

They predicted NY at 9:02 on CNN. our polls closed at 9:00. yes, we usually go democrat but for pete's sake. DH was barely in the door from voting!

I don't really understand how these projections work. They called a couple of states on CNN 3 minutes after their polls closed. They called other states with less than 1% of precincts reporting. How are they comfortable making a projection so early? :confused3

Maybe they should wait until tomorrow before getting their panties in a wad... That way it'd be more easier to "call" the states than it is tonight. Some within minutes of the polls closing...

And with 9% of precincts reporting, they're "calling" Ohio for Obama.... :confused3 :confused3

I know, what the heck is with that? 9% does not a majority make.

They are using some weird mix of exit polling & voodo mystical interpretation.

They just can't stand to wait; but we won't know for sure until morning...
remember Truman with the Dewey wins newspaper? :3dglasses

They discussed that tonight on one of the channels. They go by their exit polling. If it shows an overwelming lead for one candidate, they call it immediately after the polls close. They also compare their polling to actual votes counted to see if it's valid.

I find it very annoying that they call states that currently (per CNN state map) have only 6% in and a 1% difference in the candidates. It makes no sense to me, and there are a few one both sides like that.

ITA

There's still some eastern states (my state of NC included) who they haven't been able to declare yet due to the votes being so close to make a "comfortable" prediction/projection....

Makes ya wonder how those on the Left Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii are feeling right now....
