Well we have decided to go to Disney World this summer.. 5 years since our last trip .. so excited!!!! I am about to book and needed advice. It looks like it will be a better price for my family booking plane and hotel separate.. hotel will be through Expedia.. I was planning on getting tickets through undercover tourist. Will I still be able to get magic bands and link them through our reservation? or do i need to get a package to do this. Any help and advice is appreciated!!!! Happy Planning to all!!

Every onsite guest will receive a MagicBand - booking a package is not necessary. Your MagicBands will need to be customized by you and they will be linked to your MDE account before they are shipped to your home.

After you link your tickets to your MDE account, your MagicBands will provide the link to your hotel room, charging privileges, park entrance, and FP lines.

If you are booking an offsite hotel, you'll need to purchase and link your own MBs to your MDE account. MBs for offsite guests provide the link for park entrance and FP lines.

And, just to be clear, MagicBands are not in any way required for making FP+ reservations or using FP+,
nor are they necessary for entering the parks.

Regular plastic WDW tickets will still work fine.

Even if you stay offsite you can get the plastic ticket and purchase a MB to link it to.

OK...sorry a bit more clarification. So The magic band is a convenience not a necessity? and as soon as I book my room and purchase tickets I can make FP+ reservations? How is this done? Is there a specific thread to look at???? Lord.. this is a lot thank goodness I have 6 months to plan,, wait is that enough time?? :(

The first two posts in mesaboy's thread will help. You still haven't said if you are on or off-site but his thread will answer your questions:

If your onsite, they are your room key so disney will send you the bands.

The only thing that magic band is absolutely required for if your not staying at a disney resort is ride videos on the rides that support it and ride photos on 7DMT. If the family fits in the same photo (multples of 4 of you, except for space mountain or haunted mansion where it's 3) you only need 1 band. Generally I saw if your getting memory maker, have a band, buy it when you get there and only for the kids as a keep sake. Just make sure the adults are sitting near the kids on the rides to be in the photos (or carry it in your pocket if the kids are skipping)

the old method was ride, find your photo on the screen and tap your card. That is still there except for 7dmt. Now it's ride the ride and forget about it, they just show up in your photopass account, then you can buy or use memorymaker to get them all plus any other photos you get.

Once again thank u!! Now is this only if I purchase MM or is it automatic... Am I confusing the two?

Both (sort of) - You'll always "tap" your band when your photos are taken so they'll be keyed to your MDE account. If you purchase MM you can download those photos whenever you want. If you do NOT purchase MM then you have to purchase them separately if you want to download 'em! (Clear as mud? :) )

You'll want to setup an MDE account and then call Expedia and get your Walt Disney reservation number (although Disney may be able to look it up for you via the confirmation # given by Expedia) That will link your hotel reservation in the system and allow you to make your 60 day FP+ AND customize your magicbands (if you want) which will be delivered to your home or you can pick them up at the hotel when you check in.

You don't need the bands to setup anything in the MDE, the bands just serve as an identifier for you once you're in the park!

Wow .. Yes clear as mud lol no really thank you, we are arriving the first week of June and I now know I have A LOT to plan and learn!!!!

I imagine you've already been to mesaboy's thread and figured this out, but if not, NO, you cannot make FP+ reservations as soon as you purchase tickets. You can only do so at 60 days out from your trip.

They are a convenience unless you want the help with the photos. I seriously could not care less about photopass-taken photos, let alone ride photos, so it barely even crosses my mind.

You'll make the reservation through expedia, and there will be some confirmation number (either on expedia, in your email, or by contacting expedia and asking for your 12 digit disney confirmation number that starts with 4) to enter into your MyDisneyExperience account. That links hotel and allows for the customization of MBs.

Tickets can be added whenever you want, but it won't be until 60 days out that you can make FP+ arrangements.

Or... at any time LESS THAN 60 days before WDW Resort check-in.
