Maybe Disney was right about closing down Pleasure Island after all...

Interesting piece on "the death of the nightclub" from the UK newspaper The Guardian. Basic point of article is that millennials are much less interested spending their nights in dark, loud smoky clubs than their predecessors. Yes, the examples in the article are from Britain, but I can see the same things it describes also happening here.

I keep an eye on the savepleasureisland blog regularly, who review other clubs around orlando and sometimes further away. Its interesting that quite often the club reviews are for struggling clubs that are quite empty. Its also interesting that many of the clubs he refers to as previously known as multiple times because they've closed and re-opened so many times.

So I agree it seems that American clubs, whilst possibly quite different environments to British clubs, are suffering the same fate.

As a 21 year old I can say that it being expensive is the biggest reason. You can but cases of beer or handles of liquor for the cost of a bar tab of 100 bucks. The darkness has little to do with lower numbers. It's just the price and many would rather have a house party and save money.

Millenials are rapidly being exposed as the poster children of what exactly a post middle class world is going to look like.

Just two weeks back...it was reported that 42 million millenials live at home in the US...

My question is: how'd the other 341 find the cash to get their own party pad?!?

It doesn't stop there... Facebook, apple, google, research groups have all done studies/tracking that the comparative "disgruntlement" shown on social media by millenials is something like 3x Any other demographic.

That's staggering...

What am i saying? Is that the y's don't have the CASH to go clubbin...and so the clubs will die quickly.

Disney may have been prescient on PI.

This new generations bought into a model that doesn't work for them...like it did the boomers and the Xers...

And that was: go to college, party a little, get good job, party some more, settle down with cute wife or stud muffin...have kids...pay for everything...buy DVC, pay for grandkids APs and mouse ears...

Notice "live with parents to 44 with $300,000 psychology degree from Syracuse" isn't in the lifeplan.

Quite interesting how social evolution doesn't always invoke the needle pointing up, huh?

Great post/thread/read...thank you!

(No disrespect for Syracuse...by the way :) )

True... But not to this argument really...

I love tommy bahama and lily Pulitzer...

But I'm rapidly becoming an old fart ;)
Well you'll get you tommy Bahamas in the town center portion but as for the landing that is probably the best part of this transformation. Lots of original and new things there that can appeal for locals and travelers. I'll agree that everything else is a mall tho.

They specifically wanted out of the club
Business...

Now it's more a "bar and grill" approach going up...with REALLY expensive wings and margaritas..

Well see how it pans out...but I don't see catering to the young crowd...

More the middle aged farts in tommy bahama:wave:

Lots of new exciting additions coming especially within the Landing section of the springs.

and some complete failures as well. Going by savepleasureisland blog again, Sound Lion and Apex do get a few customers but Erwin Pearl Jewelry and Art of Shaving appear to be absolute failures.

It certainly is possible that they have/are overbuilding the space and are behind the scenes saying "who wants a spot?" To anyone...whether they fit or not.

Brick and mortar is very risky now...
The places where there is a "need" is in brand new urban sprawl/urban flight...
That isn't wdw...even it's unique setting may not be able to offset the amazon effect.

Not sure about Erwin Pearl but Art of Shaving is owned by Gillette, so they can take the hit of a bad first year. Though I don't expect them to do much better, anything you could buy there you could buy on Amazon for 1/2 of the price, their mark up is insane. My DH's mid range safety razor was $35 off of Amazon, Art of Shaving starts at $45, when he went into the one at our local mall he left unimpressed.

ahhh you went to Georgetown, it all makes sense now! ;)

Ok...I'm pretty sure this is really clever...but you're gonna have to fill the blanks in for me?

Syracuse and Georgetown are huge rivals so clearly any bashing of Syracuse must come from a Georgetown alum!

(i'm born, raised, and still live in Syracuse so my 'Cuse radar goes off when people post about the area. I know you were joking so it's all good)

Right...big east basketball...I get it now...

Went right past me

Over the past decade or more I think the nightclub scene has just run its' course. Things change, and Disney was probably (accidentally) ahead of the curve. From what I've seen, the nightclub has been replaced by craft brewpubs and retro arcade/bars. Over the years I've been noticing the younger crowds (as I'm getting older) frequenting the popular craft brew places, and at the same time, the numerous clubs that used to be popular are long since gone.

With The Boathouse bar areas, The Hangar, Edison, along with Raglan Road and other current bar hangouts... Disney Springs may be shaping up to be something interesting. Folks keep saying it's just a bunch or restaurants and shopping, but I look at it as a lot of potential bar space which is currently what's popular.

We have an Art of Shaving in Atlanta - while I'll gladly use their shaving products, I never buy razors or blades from them because the mark-up is extreme. I'm willing to fork over the amount they charge for shaving cream because a large container lasts me almost six months so I'm not spending much more than I would on a can of Gillette, but it's not a store that people just stop in, browse, and pick up a few things. It's a destination store and I can really see how it's going to struggle down there.

Very interesting read. Thank you for sharing.

So the question for me then becomes this: If the Millennials were struggling to afford the $20 cover and $10 drinks, how are they going to afford the $110 surf & turf at Boathouse? Sure, there are more reasonable options on the menu, but I'm not convinced that you're going to spend an evening eating & drinking at Disney Springs any cheaper than you could at the DTD w/ PI of old.

Well...we're back to square one on "state of the union"

Why should we even talk about nightlife, clubs, brew pubs, bar and grills?

Disney springs isnt meant to draw jim from yeehaw junction or Javier from Oviedo into the fold...

It's meant to bring Harold Von Fulstenschmerz III and his 18 member family from their over water sequoia units at wilderness lodge over for some really high priced martinis at the Indy bar and for some "light shopping" at coach and prada next to days of Christmas...

The targets are not about "expansion" or "inclusion" anymore...
