MAY the SUPER GOOFS have a fantastic month!

Ok, quick post to finally update my miles for April. It took me a while to convert my steps at WDW into miles.

Run/Walk: 34
Xtraining: 8
WDW: 51 (I can count these, right? :) )
Official 5K: 6

Total: 99 :cool1:

Hey Goofs!

Kim - Thanks for your kind words. I'm trying! You might have already left, but I've run at CBR before. You can easily run a 5K there, the pathways loop around the lake. There were several runners out when I went and I found another woman to run with one morning! Have fun! :yay:

Steve - Hope that IT band is feeling better! :wizard:

Todd - Hope you're feeling better. Sounds like things have been tough.

Suzanne - Finally! Congrats on getting that medal!!! :thumbsup2

Angie - CONGRATS on that rockin PR!!! :woohoo:

Maura - Happy birthday to your son today! :)

So remember that run in my program I had to skip last week? Ya, it turned out to be food poisoning I think. I was awful sick, didn't compare to last time, though. What are the odds I'd get food poisoning twice in a year?!? Nobody else got sick in my family. I almost don't want to eat out anymore!!! We had a really busy weekend so I forced myself thru it, couldn't really eat.

I took off a few days and then crammed all my runs in later this week. Probably not wise, but I was feeling guilty for missing that one run as it was. Got in 13 miles between Tuesday, yesterday and today. DH ran with me Tuesday and I got to try a new path down by the river. Ran 5.25 miles with only one one minute walking break. Almost back to running a 10K in full... Trying to accept my slower pace, if I could just lose these extra pounds I know it would help! Can't get motivated on that end for some reason...

Going back to WDW next weekend for a few nights. Annual pass is about to expire so we're gonna make the best of it. Can't say we didn't get our money's worth!

Have an awesome weekend Goofs! :grouphug:

Wow, I cannot believe that we are already into mid-May. Where the heck has the time gone???!!!!

WELCOME to Randy and Dawn. Glad to have you!!

Steve - Congrats on your PR and getting your results updated.

Todd - I agree with the others; this sounds like it was pretty scary. I am glad to hear you are on the mend. Good luck with the recovery and getting back into the swing of things.

Suzanne - Glad to hear the medal issues were cleared up. Shame it wasn't a more spectacular ending.

Maura - Happy Birthday to your son!!!! It has been unseasonably cold here too. We had several days this week where we did not even reach 50. :(

I had a great time at WDW. I did not get any official runs in, but got tons of walking. My feet felt much better overall than the last couple of trips. I really only had pain towards the end of the day and only once was it in the "very painful" realm.

I had my first real run outside yesterday. (I am not counting that impromptu 5K last month). I decided it was time to stop putting it off. There is a trail system that runs through Madison. A good portion of it is through protected land. I picked a section that seemed easy to get to and headed out there. My goal is to do this at least 2 times a week.

I am really happy overall with it. I completed my full workout and even ran an extra 2 minutes. It was cold and drizzling, but I warmed up really quickly. I probably overdid it a bit though. The scenery was so pretty and peaceful that I wanted to see the whole segment. I should have turned around halfway through the workout, but I kept going. I got to the end of the segment close to the end of my workout and realized I was going to have to walk the whole way back...in the rain. :sad2: I still really enjoyed it. My overall pace was 20:00, but that included the walk back. My workout pace was 18:50. This is a lot slower than what I have been doing on the treadmill, but I forced myself to take it easy. I am glad I did. My thighs are killing me today!! Owie!

I did so well with adding in the extra 2 min that I am going to do the same on saturday and skip ahead a week in my program. :) So, this week I am counting as 12/18 and next week will be my repeat week, also at 12/18.

I have a question about official races. I am wondering how many I should do during my build up to the Half. Here is my schedule so far for this year:

6/5 Susan G Komen Race for the Cure: 5k (goal is to run at least half of it)
8/21 Madison Mini-Marathon & 5K: 5K (goal is to run all of it and get an official time) - just signed up for this one today
10/30 Middleton Haunted Hustle: 10K (goal is to run all of it)
1/8/2011 WDW Half Marathon (goal is to just finish it!)

I keep thinking I should have more in there. I was thinking about trying to find something each month. Is that too much??

JeanettePersonally, I don't think you need a lot of races. I think you need good training. When I was training for the WDW 1/2, I did a 5k in September and a 10k in December. That's it. And really, the only reason I did those is because it fit into my traiing schedule, and the plan suggested it.

It's always good to have done one race, just so you can get the "race feel"--see how race day goes, figure out the gear and supplies that work best for you during a race. But I don't think quantity is important.

Hi Goofs! Hope everyone is doing well...our house is in chaos right now as we are in the process of moving. I figured I did about 2 hours of solid moving yesterday, with up and down the basement stairs, carrying boxes and such. I am a bit soar today! Fun times! We now have things in 3 different locations: our current house, our new house and at my in-laws for storage. Our close date for our current house is next Wednesday, but we still don't have a close date for our new house (we are buying my grandparent's house and have to wait for them to move out). I am starting to get a little stressed out not knowing when we are going to be in our new place! Thank goodness we have lots of helpers with big trucks to get it all done!

Hey Goofs,
Quick check in. Still running, legs are finally feeling better, muscle pull finally better, and just in time for the race this weekend.

Maura - apparently, CRUD stands for Clydesdales Running Ultra Distance. I know almost nothing about the race, although I have been to the state park it is in before. My main goal is simply to rack up as many miles as possible - if it goes well, I might try for a 50-miler in the fall.

Maura - Thanks for the advice. Maybe I am letting my excitement get the best of me :) I will stick with what I have for now. I did sign up to volunteer for the Madison Marathon at the end of May though. I am looking forward to that especially since they donate $8 for every hour that I work to the charity of my choice.

Ashleigh - I have a coworker who went through something similar. Their house was on the market all of 3 days when they got an offer for their asking price. They had not even broken ground on their new house yet. In a span of 3 weeks, they had put one house up for sale, found an apartment and storage unit, moved, closed on the house, and started building the new one. She has been a bit frazzled to say the least :)

While my run outdoors went amazingly well on Thursday, it went amazingly bad on Sunday. Ok, maybe not all that bad since I did get through it, but it was rough and painful. I feel odd saying this, but I think my groin muscles are sore. Either that or it is my joints. It hurts to walk. I am hoping it is my muscles because that will get better faster. They hurt over the weekend too, but I found it interesting that during my run, the pain was only present when I was walking, not when running. :confused3

I am probably going to run on the treadmill tomorrow to give my legs a little cushioning and then head back outside on Thursday. I am really looking forward to using my new Garmin Forerunner 305! :cool1:

Todd - I hope you are feeling better. Great attitude about starting over being better than not starting at all. Don't rush anything too quickly.

Suzanne - Sorry the medal wasn't what you were expecting. Live and learn I guess. I'm sure you won't be running that one again but at least you have something to display.

Angie - Awesome job on your PB! The cold and rain can really discourage people but you really kicked butt. Keep it up!

Rich - Yeouch! I don't know how you do it and can still plan for future races. I'd crouch in the corner and whimper for at least two months!

Maura - Happy belated 18th Bday for your son. I hope he had a great day.

Shan - Sorry to hear about the food poisoning. Have a fun time back at the World though!

Jeanette - You are doing a great job. I hope you get can get outside and enjoy your upcoming runs. There is no magic number of races to do. I'd run one almost every weekend if I could. I do find that I really push myself during races a lot harder than training runs (see below) so my body couldn't handle it too often. Just listen to your body. I like Maura's advice of focusing on the training. It looks like a great lineup of races you have!

Ashleigh - Best of luck with the move! I hope everything goes smooth.

AFM, I went pretty easy last week, mostly due to putting in way too many hours at work. I spent a lot more time on the elliptical and spin class and backed off running when I felt that pain in the area of the IT band. I did a nice easy 40 minutes on the treadmill on Friday and felt great. I got out and ran 6 miles near my house and felt the same sharp feeling on my other leg which is the one I had knee problems with most of last year. I walked for a while until it felt better and cut about two minutes off my pace and lightly jogged the rest. I walked every time I felt it start to hurt again.

I haven't been the same since pushing myself at that half on May 2nd. I really need to practice what I preach and force myself not to do anything dumb or push myself too much harder than my level of fitness. I do great in training by my ego keeps getting the better of me in races and I try so hard to PR or do well in my age group that I keep hurting myself. I need to focus on the enjoyment racing and running in general brings me and forget about being competitive for a while.

We'll see how it goes this week. I hope everyone has a great week!

Ashleigh Moving counts as cross training! ;)

Rich Good luck during the race. Hope it's not too CRUD-dy (yeah, bad, but what are you gonna do?)

Jeanette I guess since I picked "super Saver shipping, my Garmin won't be here for a LOOONG time. Hasn't even shipped yet (not sure why not)

Steve I think it's just natural to push during a race, or if you're like me, have no clue what your pace really is! Hope you find a way to take it easy--and let me know what worls. That is another of my goals this year--to just enjoy arace and not worry about time. I am planning to do DL 1/2 like that.

As for me....I'm alittle tired. My run and yoga today felt tiring. I have been giving myself a rest day, but still not perky and chipper (okay--I NEVER am anyway!)

Finally getting the last section of fence for our yward done so that DD(og) will be totally contained. We've only had him for 3 years! It will be nice to boot him outside and not have to always go out with him to make sure he doesn't dash off after another dog or squirrel.

Maura

:worried: After much internal debate, I have decided to skip my run today. My legs are worse off than I originally thought. I walked a short half mile this afternoon at work. The pain increased by quite a bit and I could barely get up the stairs when I got home. As my husband reminded me, it is better to miss one day than to miss a couple of weeks if I make it worse and really hurt myself. I feel so guilty though...

Hello Goofs! I haven't had time to read all the updates but hope everyone is great and getting in lots of miles!!

Between trying to make some life decisions, end of freshman year stuff for my daughter and trying to plan a great vacation, life is flying by for me and I am tired!! I am about 95% sure that I am not doing the January 1/2 in 2011 even though I live 20 minutes away but would love to see all of you who do come to town. There is a 1/2 in November and a 1/2 in February that I want to do and can do both moneywise for the same amount as the 1/2 registration. Also, I've done the course 3 times now and its not a favorite. Maybe I will change my mind after vacation clears my head, we'll see.

Suzanne - As you said, you have done it several times already and since you live close you can do it another time. Do what you feel is best for you. I am glad to hear that you can be there anyway to cheer us on! I am really looking forward to meeting my fellow Goofs!

Well, my legs started feeling a lot better last night after several hours of resting on my recliner. I had no pain this morning when I got up, but having walked around a bit since then, I am feeling a little soreness. Nothing like yesterday though. I am so glad. It looks like I won't have any problems getting my run in tomorrow. Today will be another rest day. I normally go to Curves on Wed, but I have Madison Marathon volunteer orientation tonight.

Jeanette Glad you're feeling better.

Suzanne I'm on the fence for January, too. Depends on other race results during the year and whether or not I do Wine and Dine (unlikely) or maybe Princess (who knows)

It's been a tiring day. I did a 1 hr swim, a 1 hr bike session and then walked the dog 3.5 miles to a bakery to get my DH a cake for his birthday (today). It's like I did a little triathlon.....only in pieces. I'm tired!

Tomorrow I am volunteering at the Komen Race for the Cure in Detroit. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Maura

Hey Maura, I did a triathlon this weekend too but mine too three days. I had an easy 4 mile run on Friday, a tough and hilly 13.3-mile bike ride on Saturday and a 500m swim today. I was really excited about the swim as it's the longest I've ever gone and is the distance I will be doing at my next triathlon in August. I will be extending that distance and will try to get a little faster as it took waaaaay too long.

We will be going camping next weekend and it's near a small 5K we have done the last two years. They have a 1K fun run for kids and it will be my 4yo DD's first race. She is so excited about it. She already has the spot on her wall picked out for her medal.

I've never had very fast times here as it's very hilly and I have pushed DD in the jogger. This year, I have to wait for her to finish her 1K and then I'm handing her a water bottle, dumping her in the jogger, and then taking off! It's more than worth it to see how much pride she will have after finishing her first race. I can't wait!

Good morning Goofs!

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was a blast - long car ride down to the race on Friday, miles and miles and miles of wet, sloppy, muddy hills all day Saturday, and then a long ride back home yesterday.

I only logged 27.9 miles (pre-doubling), but called it a day just after 7 hours. I was starting to cramp, and wasn't sure I wanted to try and walk a lap of the course in the time remaining. Parts of the course had dried out by then, but the hills were just a mess, and I was done for the day. (OTOH, since I did no training on trails, and aside from my last marathon, have done almost no double digit runs since the beginning of the year, I am pretty happy with how far I did get.)

Anyway, someone put together a video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuug_l7FAwI so you can see some of the trail conditions.

As you can see, pretty much everyone was smiling most of the day.

Sounds like everyone is doing so well with their races and training.

Everyone is doing great with their positive attitudes too even when injuries are in your way! You guys are amazing!

I'm really jealous. I'm struggling with my motivation and running. I've been trying to run 4-5 days a week, with a long run on weekends and speed/hill/tempo runs during the week for a total of 30 mile weeks.

I'm doing ok with the tempo and hill workouts, but I'm having a hard time making myself do speed work. And the long runs are seeming relentless and I just don't want to do them. This Saturday was a 12 mile run. I ran with my sister which usually makes it go better but once I hit the 8 mile mark I wanted to quit so badly. What is wrong with me? It's very frustrating. I'm rethinking the 'marathon' in the fall. :sad2:

Sorry I'm whining.

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

On Saturday, I completed my first 'real' event. It was only a 5K, but it was a hoot. It was Race for the Cure. The best part was that I was able to walk it with my sister, who finished her radiation earlier this year.

RichFantastic! 28 miles on a trail is darn impressive. The only trail races I have ever done have kicked my butt--and the longest was 5 miles!

Jeanne Don't worry about whining....that's part of what we're here for. Sounds like you're doing a lot of running and you're just burnt out.. Have you thought of cutting out one of your runs? One other thing....Don't "look ahead" and talk yourself out of your fall marathon quite yet. I know that I have had--and I'm sure others, too- bad running days when I have raised the same question--"How will I ever be able to run _______ by then". But then I remind myself that I am only TRAINING now, and I will be trained by the time the race rolls around. I hope you re-find your motivation. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself or be too hard on yourself for how you feel right now.

Todd I wish I had known you were there! I was a course marshall. Actually, I ended up holding a sign for the "1 mile turn around" in the middle of Woodward. Congrats on finishing your race.

I'm off to the gym to run. Skipped yesterday's workout because I told myself I was tired from staying up to watch the end of Lost--along with Jimmy Kimmel-- til 1 am. Pretty lame excuse, so now I have to make it up later in the week.
