We are scheduled for a 2 bedroom SSR room for nine nights in late Nov. My in-laws are 2 of the guests in the room, along with DH, DD, myself and my Mom.

My MIL fell last week and seriously injured her shoulder, she's having surgery tomorrow and may need to cancel the trip for her and my FIL if she has an issue with her recuperation and possibly due to physical therapy.

Here's my dilemma, we have a Feb use year and used points from 2011 for this reservation, what happens if we drop down to a 1 bedroom to save on points?

If they do cancel, I completely understand but will not like the idea of using so many points for a 2 bedroom for just 4 of us.

Thanks!

Under the rules what would happen is this: (a) to even get the one bedroom would mean cancelling current reservation and making a new one and thus getting the one bedroom will depend on availability with you standing in line behind anyone else who is on waitlist already for a 1 BR, (b) regardless of whether those points are 2010 points or borrowed 2011 points, the extra points would have to be used by end of Jan 2011 (borrowed points cannot be put back into original year and you are beyond banking deadline for 2010 points). Moreover, if you make that change less than 31 days before arrival, the extra points go into a holding account and can only be used by calling to reserve no more than 60 days out.

I do not know if this will work, but I would explain the circumstances of why you need the change and see if they will give you some special dispensation, like letting you make the change and allow you to put the extra points back into 2011.

Why not just enjoy the space this time? I don't think the room fairies will be on your side to cancel and rebook a smaller villa for the same time.

I doubt it would come through as well, I get that the extra space will be nice but I of course start thinking of how I could use the points at a future time, better room choice etc.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that they don't have to cancel, for my DD to have all of her living grandparents there with her is a top priority for all of us. I asked only because my MIL is also a DVC member and she thought we may be able to adjust the ressie and save some points and of course the banking/borrowing part of the membership is what I understand the least.

We have often used a two bedroom for 4 of us traveling. It is very nice and home like with everyone having plenty of space. I would keep it as is. Good luck..

I know that I'm unusual in this regard, but for me---I'd rather stay offsite in a 2BR than onsite on a 1BR with the four of us, with the possible exception of the AKV-Kidani or BLT 1BR units with the second bath. Even then, a close thing. But, if the "other two" were my daughter and my mom, I'd *absolutely* want the 2BR, so that the two of them would not have to share the pull-out (or, in my Mom's case, even sleep on the pull-out).

And, no, while I love my Mom, she would not be getting the master BR.

We love having a 2 bedroom for just the 4 of us in our family. If you look at the points charts, the difference in points for a 1 bedroom and a 2 bedroom isn't that much. We love having the living room as a living room. If my DH wants to wake up early and make coffee, he doesn't wake our boys up if we have a 2 bedroom!

I have a couple of people that I could ask at the last minute if my in-laws end up cancelling. As for the sleeping arrangements, my in-laws are getting the master bedroom so, whoever we ask won't shake things up. We are also seeing the upside of having the extra space and beds if that's what it ends up coming to.

I don't see the problem. We would never get a 1 bedroom for 4 people. Anything over 2 requires a 2 bedroom for us.

I'm so glad we're not the only ones who think this way! We're a family of 4 with a DS7 and DD10 so sharing the sofabed isn't going to be an option much longer. We're looking forward to having a 2 bedroom dedicated for our trip next year and the space it will afford.

A 1 bedroom may well not even be available if you would decide to switch from a 2 bedroom. On an upcoming trip I am booking a studio and a 1 bedroom rather than a 2 bedroom, just in case there is a need to drop the studio (even though my option will be more points).

Having recently been trying to adjust days for a trip 11/28-12/2 I can pretty much say that you will have a problem getting your 9 days in a row at one resort. I had to waitlist my first and last days several months ago and luckily they came through but you are really cutting it close. I would just enjoy the space the 2 BR will give. I had one trip where my original group of 9 dropped to 5 and we had a GV at OKW- Yes it would have been nice to save some points but I knew we couldn't make a change since it was Christmas week. We had a wonderful time. Hope everything works out for your MIL. My DIL is having shoulder surgery Monday that should have been done over a year ago but because of insurance company issues (worker's comp) it didn't get done because they kept putting her off. They have told her she will not be able to use the arm for 3 weeks except for PT and then it will be another 3-4 weeks to get even close to normal. Hopefully your MIL will have a faster recovery since she is having surgery so quickly after the injury.

OP here with an update.

My MIL is on the road to recovery from her shoulder injury and surgery but last week made the decision that they are not able to come. (They re-scheduled their trip along with SIL, nieces and nephew for Feb, Disney and the airlines worked with them so there is minimal monetary loss)

We dropped the dining plan and only kept the reservations that my Mom, DH, DD and I really wanted and we will put in a garden grocer order to have all of our favorites at the villa.

Close friends of ours are venturing into opening up their own business in January and when asked if they want to join us, they jumped at the chance since the business will limit their ability to travel for the near future. They are Disney fanatics and we are so glad they are able to come down for the last 5 nights of our trip.

Well that was a nice change for your trip. Have a good time.

Sometimes things just to seem work out for the best. Glad that is the case for you! :thumbsup2

Well that was a nice change for your trip. Have a good time.

Thanks, our friends are up for anything when it comes to Disney which is great. They are joining us for MVMCP and want to go to character meals, which is a welcome change. They are also celebrating their anniversary while we are there along with DH and I so Mom has already suggested going somewhere special with DD so the 4 of us can go for drinks.

Glad to hear that everything is working out for you and your MIL. Have a wonerful trip. Let's hope for some really great weather the end of the month.

Believe me, keeping the 2 bedroom reservation is far better than trying to use holding points 2 months out. From where I stand, trying to use points 2 months out is difficult enough, but then when you throw on top of that the fact that you have to use them before the end of February, you are really limiting your ability to use them or lose them.
