Find an allergist and look into Xolair injections! Xolair is a an injection, not normally allergy shots. They have saved my husband!

My sister is an asthma nurse. She mentioned this drug too. I will have dh mention this to his allergist. What is it?

We are home now. My allergies actually started up yesterday. I get very reactive eyes. I have meds from my ophthalmologist but didn't really get relief until I got to the airport.

We still had a nice trip despite the challenges. We swam, had drinks by the pool, went bowling, had some great meals, enjoyed the savannah views, participated in the African cultural activities at animal kingdom lodge.

We will figure this out. I'm getting our dr to make the referral to dh's allergist tomorrow. Hopefully we will have an appt shortly.

Xolair is to be used as a last resort. I have asthma, not very controlled at times. I'm on allergy shots, home nebulizer treatments,Dulera inhaler, and prednisone ( on and off several times a year). I was just hospitalized for it in January. I spoke to my pulmonary doctor about Xolair. He did not want me to try it even with everything I'm taking.He only puts his patients on this drug when they can not get off of prednisone. Again a last resort drug. Not to be used in place of the other asthma drugs unless all else is ineffective.

I am not an asthma nurse, however, I am a nurse.

I learned of Xolair injections when my husband, a COPDer , EX smoker, lifelong allergy sufferer and asthmatic, was almost deemed disabled before the age of 40! He was on predisone for 7 years, in and out of the hospital w/ pneumonia, his was asthma completely out of control, regular allergy shots for years and they tested his IGE ( for our region it use the North Eastern Allergy panel) blood level and they were through the roof. This drug is really potent and pricey. My Dh gets max dose 2 times a month. It's around $5,000 a month and must be injected in the providers office. The good news in our insurance has always paid 100% with no deductible; and from what I gather this is common because it is covered under major medical insurance.

As I said this was life changing for my DH: he's now on lowest dose of Advair and rarely needs a rescue inhaler or nebulizer. It's worth a shot, good luck!

As an allergy sufferer, allergic to nearly everything that grows, I feel for your husband!

Florida is definitely one of the worst states for allergies because of the constant moisture and humidity, and multiple bloom/pollinate/grow seasons.

Shockingly, I have not had terrible allergy experiences in Florida - I have actually joked about "the need" to move to Florida to avoid the horrible allergies I have at home.

I think the worst allergens in Florida are mold, mildew, and the grasses.

We took an Eastern Caribbean cruise a few years ago, and it happened to be during the bloom season for most of the palm trees, that wasn't pleasant! The bees were having a field day though, there were THOUSANDS of bees on every palm tree! It was pretty crazy!

Dh saw his allergist here at home. He is not a candidate for shots as his allergies are well managed at home. The plan is for a short course of prendisone while in Florida. He will start before leaving at a higher dose and ramp down to a maintenance dose for the duration of the trip. Dr says it should do the trick. If not dh will head back to the dr to rejig the meds again. I guess we will find out in October. Two weeks booked. Dust mites are the biggest allergen. They are everywhere though. I'll get the allergy clean of the too as usual. Not sure if it helps but it can't hurt. Last time they switched out all the drapes and pillows and he was still a mess.

Anyway. Glad to have a plan.

Pick up a couple of relatively inexpensive allergy pillow covers and a possibly a mattress cover and either leave them or remove them and put them in a plastic bag after he's left the room. Put all other pillows in the closet. Make certain they change the comforters and pad. Stay away from or have them remove any other pillows such as from the couch. Make sure they steam clean the couch, chair, kitchen chairs as applicable. Don't worry too much about carpets and not at all about drapes. You may also want to consider washing the sheets/cases in hot water yourself as well. The humidity difference may be your issue since under 50% humidity makes it difficult for them to grow. When you check in make sure you talk to the manager and have clear understanding as to what's going on and that you are all on the same page. They could have your room done perfectly and then give it away to someone else.

I suspect the oral steroids will work combined with other usual measures though they do have side effects and must be tapered if on them too long (usually over 9 days at a pop among other situations). Repeated courses increase side effects but not too risky at once a year. If it works you might consider trying less drastic measures combined with the dust mite precautions. Generally a good antihistamine combined with a high dose nasal steroid done routinely and mite precautions will be enough even for the most affected patients. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks so much. We are booked for October and January--two weeks each. Our last trip was march. Dh says he will never do march again. We are hopeful.

We have 860 points. Spend one month a year at wdw. Problem is my husband's allergies while at wdw are so bad there seems to be no point in coming here. He basically has the flu while here. This is despite taking massive doses of antihistamines, and inhalers.

I'm wondering if perhaps we sell and repurchase in California. How much time can one spend in dlr in a year. Wdw is really a second home, not a vacation spot. Could we get that in California? Flight will be longer but I think our Florida days are coming to an end.

Every morning it looked like someone punched me in the eyes and I felt drained and heavy headed. I actually found that I became allergic in Orlando/at WDW resorts but it became even worse with DVC.

I haven't read the entire thread so apologies in advance if I'm going over possible solutions already discussed. I truly believe I had allergies from the outside environment there but I do believe what is used in the room did a lot of the damage for me. One day someone mentioned that she chooses 1) no bleach on bedding and 2) no chemical sprays used in the room.

I now do that. It has not taken everything away but it has certainly helped for my situation.

I have also found that a few resorts were better than others. I don't know why. Maybe some didn't follow the requests or for some other unknown reason.

I have been at my best, and it was a big enough difference to list, at:

1) BLT
2) SSR
3) GFV - I think I will use this as a reason to buy there.

Anyway, I have a few allergies at home but absolutely nothing like your husband and nothing like I have in Orlando but for whatever it is worth.

We are a severe allergy family here too, so I can sympathize.

I was wondering if you could bring a HEPA air filter with you (check it as baggage) and run it 24/7 in the room.

Also, when we are at wdw my dh checks the pollen levels online. If they are high and are showing the things he's allergic too, he usually opts to stay in the room and work. March this year was a weird month, things came into bloom later than usual due to unseasonal cold.

I can never move to Florida....I'm allergic to the water! After 4-5 days I start breaking out in a rash. Even bringing my own special body wash from home and trying not to shave my legs, I'm still a mess after a few days. Ugh.

They don't help with dust mite allergies. The dander is too heavy and doesn't just float around in the air.

Thanks Lisa. I wasn't trying to correct you. Things don't always come across well in print. My point was that I do work with housekeeping on all visits and they are very good. It's quite a battle and I know there are many, like you who really struggle in Florida. The fact is controlling ones environment is the best defence against allergies. I'm glad you've found some relief. We stay at kidani village usually. We love it there. It doesn't love my husband so much though.

There is an alternative allergy treatment done by some acupunturist called NAET. My sister swears by it. She is not 100% cured and does have recurrences but she feels so much better..you can google it. I've used it for food allergies.... 3 years ago I broke out in a horrible rash for 4 months and it only went away after I started the treatments. They are about $80 a session.....

I was thinking, did the allergist test him for the things that would be in florida, it's a totally different set of tests than Canada? Otherwise, if he only has house dust mite allergies March wouldn't matter.
