Just writing because I found out we may have to cancel our October trip. One of my cats may need surgery on his knee, he tore his ACL. If he has the surgery, he will have to stay as still as possible for 4 months. My DH doesnt want to leave his mom and dad with that responsibility and I dont blame him but I am still sad.

We will find out in a month. We are trying to keep our kitteh on a diet (he is 20lbs) and still in hopes he heals some on his own and wont require the surgery.

Please send some pixie dust our way!

Thank you everyone.

Hi,

I am sorry you may have to cancel your trip. My DH and I were just talking about our trip in Sept. We found 4 feral kittens and brought them home to socialize them. They have been in their own room and when I brought them to the vet he said they have ringworm. We have to have them on Anitfungal treatment at least a month maybe longer. We have friends that take care of our other cats but I can't burden them with their care. We were hoping they would be ready to be part of our household. If not either we cancel our trip or have to board them, either one is not a good choice. Could you board the kitty? I understand the cost factor believe me.

I will send pixie dust for both of us.pixiedust:

I could probably board them at low or no cost because I volunteer at a cat rescue and I am sure they would do it for me; but my DH is very against it because he feels our Doodlebop (kitty) will be suffering enough without being in a strange place.

I know both choices stink..... I know how you feel, we brought home a stray who ended up with Bartonella. We had all 3 cats on daily medication for a month. Its not easy..

Maybe your friends wont mind...

I cant believe there is someone out there in the same boat... IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL!!! :) GOOD LUCK!

I wouldn't cancel your trip just yet. When our dog Otis was 2 he torn his left rear ACL and had to have surgery. Then 6 mo later he tore his right rear ACL and again had to have surgery. Both times he was up and hobbling around after about 4-5 days. His leg was stiff when he walked but you really can't argue with a dog to lay down and rest. He was walking up and down the stairs within 3 weeks and by a month he was walking just fine. Now Otis is 13.5 years old and he is bothered by his knees only on cold and damp winter days and he sits with his legs out to the side (not bent the way most dogs sit) but he's healthy and walking just fine.

Thank you for letting me know that. I really thought it was going to be miserable for him and us.

How in the heck do you keep a cat still?

Hope your vacation works out. Maybe you can postpone to a later trip?

Thank you.

The only way to keep him still would be to keep him in a crate the entire time; which we decided not to do. It would be unfair to him. The vet said the worse that can happen is that he walks with a limp because the knee didnt heal properly. I dont think that is a bad thing.
He is on a diet now and doing well, in just a few days he has lost 1.1 lbs and isnt complaining as much as we thought he would. Without all the extra weight, he will have less of a chance of hurting himself more or injuring the other leg.

Our vacation is safe!!!! and our kitteh is doing fine :)
