May 9, 2012: 5 Night Bahamas Cruise on Disney Magic

I'm wondering how her kids knew of Disney at all? 90% of Mickey is TV!

Having kids from ages 14 to 5, there are a ton of movies that Kane has seen that Cole hasn't. Just the other day Cole thought The Lion King was a new Disney movie coming out. Poor Kid! On the other hand I get to watch Cole as he watches the old movies that are completely new to him.popcorn::

Funny story when Kane was growing up one of his FAVORITE movie was and still is Nightmare Before Christmas. He was SO messed up when it came to Halloween and Christmas. To him having skeletons out for Christmas decor was a no brainer! :lmao:

I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!! I never thought about the mixed up seasonal decor though :rotfl2:

Hey folks! Just wanted to drop in and say hi. I recently booked the family on this embarkment and have found the thread (and other forums) to be helpful as this will be our inaugural Disney Cruise. My Wife and I have a RCL cruise under our belts and brought our son along on a Carnival cruise about a year and a half ago. This though will be my soon-to-be 4 year old daughter's first trip so she's especially looking forward to meeting as mny princesses as possible.

I already started one thread regarding car service vs. bus to the port so any additional insight here would be helpful but my main concern here is coffee. Well, more like my wife's concern really. She's a bit of coffee junkie and has a low tolerance for sub-par joe. I have seen a few comments earlier but wanted to see if she should consider bringing her own. I'm sure it needs to be instant so any recommendations there would be good too.

Thanks!

Welcome!

I can't comment about the coffee, but I do plan to bring my own creamer. I need my coffee to not taste like coffee ;) I'm sure you'll get more useful comments from others... :thumbsup2

Welcome DenoNYC

We just had a whole conversation about coffee a day or so. Basically it depends on how your wife likes coffee. You might want to scroll through but as I recall a couple of us who like a premium iced coffee plan to get a couple of specialty coffees (the place that serves the premium coffee opens at noon) and store them in our room. Also, Starbucks VIA was mentioned for hot coffee.

Add me to the in pain/broken group. I came on this thread to catch up, while in tears. I went speed walking with my neighbors and I am in so much pain now. It was kind of funny to come on hear and see how many of you were also having a rough physical day... NOT that you were in pain, but yikes... we are a sad bunch tonight! I had foot surgery last Jan that went very bad. I caught a severe infection. Went in for a minor surgery and never thought I'd end up in the hospital asking if I was going to loose my foot. I was hospitalized for 2 weeks, and came home on a pic for 5 wks. Had to postpone a cruise we had planned for our 10yr and missed 4months of work. I had SO much pain still, and my last MRI said I still have an infection in my foot. Just stinks. Thursday I am going to a new orthopedic in the city. Im really praying that he has some ideas on how to make my foot better. Ok thats my sob story for the night. Back to dreaming of Disney :lovestruc

Oof, that sounds awful too. A few years ago I had some weird thing (either a stress fracture or something else - military docs didn't do much diagnostically) that put me in a hard boot for almost 2 months and that was horrible so I can't even imagine! *hugs* for you too!

Psssst....don't mention about the big approval over there. It's on the down-low for now until we get solid options worked out to put to the vote. :)

Awwww...I understand. We have another chick whose 1st bundle will be just over 1 at sailing and a few others who hope to have new additions by then. A few others aren't 100% which is okay. How do you predict where you'll be 18 months out? One of my roomies has a military hubby also. She isn't at all sure but I told her I'd hold her spot until 6 months at least & hope for the best. If we have to swap her out for another person last minute I don't think it'd be hard to fill her spot. Just think, I can't have anything come up to keep me from going because it'd mess up everyone in the 3 rooms I have booked with the onboard booking savings. Eek!!!

My lips are sealed! When I saw that you hadn't announced it I didn't say anything. ;)

Even though they didn't make it to the beach it sounds like they had a great time without paying for a Disney Excursion, and that's a great review for me. We are going to cancel the Beach Day and just go it alone to Cable Beach. :cool1:
I have another question for everyone that may be a silly question, but I'm assuming everyone takes cash in Nassau. I thought I read somewhere that some place don't take cash and to bring your credit card only. Also, when we get off the boat in Nassau should we take our passports? I wasn't planing on it, maybe just a copy if anything.

I am not positive what we are doing, but keep in mind that the reason you HAVE your passport is in case you need to fly home instead of completing the cruise. I just saw a trip report where some passengers (not the TRer, someone else) didn't make it back to the boat. The CMs told the DISer that they would be flown home at their own expense. But if they didn't have their passports... I'm not sure how it would work. I'm tempted to buy the Passporter lanyard thingy just for this purpose!

Good Morning fellow cruisers, it is that time of the week again!! :thumbsup2We now have only

tharg-5-50-trans.gif

WEEKS until we sail!! :dance3::woohoo::banana::dance3::banana::woohoo::dance3:

OMG, I am so excited and so not ready!

Ok, so on a totally different note....

I'm reading the thread about what to do/not to do on a DCL and the last post the poster put her kids didn't enjoy the AP show and Crush b/c they don't watch TV and had no clue who crush was....OMG??!!! REALLY??? WHAT'S THE POINT OF A DISNEY CRUISE IF YOUR KIDS HAVE NO IDEA OF WHO THE CHARACTERS ARE????
Ok, just had to get that off my chest and didn't want to post in her thread... plus I knew you guys would understand! ;)

Anyway, I hope EVERYONE is feeling better. I know I am today. Green tea helps a TON!

I worry a little about DS for a similar reason. He's not very familiar with a lot of the princesses because DH won't let him watch the princess movies! >.< He'll recognize that they ARE princesses but that's probably it. :rolleyes1

I'm a little worried about my DH for that same reason! It is so bizarre that the fancy coffee shop doesn't open until noon. Why would they do that?! I am just hoping he can deal with room service/drink station coffee for a few mornings. He doesn't really like Via either and mostly drinks his coffee hot. :/

The DCL Facebook page shows two ships passing each other near Castaway Cay. Do you think we'll get to see another ship while we're on board? I keep reading about "horn battles". That would be so cool! :cool1:

I stopped reading that thread...can't remember why...but that would have gotten me too! LOL

Isn't it great that you can come here and speak your mind.

You know, I was just thinking the other day what a great group we have here for our cruise! :group hug:

Well thank you! I only started the ball rolling because it was always something casually discussed but nobody ever established when. I pushed the when part and the ball rolls from there. I have my moments with the boys when I'm like "I need to get away - NOW" and then I have my escape cruise to look forward to. That's awesome that a couple of you hung in there for your getaway cruise. That rocks! :thumbsup2

That's what happened with the two of us. Everyone kept talking about it and discussing it, so she and I finally pushed for a date. We are the most flexible of the group and can pretty much go whenever. Of course, our pushing ended up fizzling. Oh well...the two of us will go, and have enough FABs for all of them!

Funny story when Kane was growing up one of his FAVORITE movie was and still is Nightmare Before Christmas. He was SO messed up when it came to Halloween and Christmas. To him having skeletons out for Christmas decor was a no brainer! :lmao:

That is too funny!!! Love that movie for that very reason!

Welcome aboard DenoNYC! Glad you have joined us here! I am so not a coffee drinker, so I am absolutely no help whatsoever. But there are quite a few coffee connoisseurs in our group, and I'm sure they will be able to give you great tips!

The DCL Facebook page shows two ships passing each other near Castaway Cay. Do you think we'll get to see another ship while we're on board? I keep reading about "horn battles". That would be so cool! :cool1:

So, let's see...our itinerary compared to a few other cruises...

We may be able to see the Dream at night on May 9th as we head out and she is heading back to Port Canaveral. There is also a very slight chance we could see her heading into out of Nassau as we head in, although doubtful as we will be coming from the west and she will be heading north.

There is also a possibility we could see the Fantasy as we head towards Nassau and she heads towards Castaway Cay, but again doubtful as we will be west and she will be further east. The best chance at seeing the Fantasy is heading to Castaway Cay while she is on her way from Port Canaveral to Grand Cayman during a sea day.

Hopefully if passings do happen, they will be announced!

Cindy,

My TA friend who was on the Fantasy preview said whenever they were in proximity or passing the Dream the captain would announce it. If we get close enough for a sighting do you think the captain will announce it for us??? As exciting as DCL ships passing is, you'd think they'd make an effort to get them close enough to make it a thrill for the passengers when possible. I would love to see another Disney ship while cruising!

Christina - I'm soooo sorry to hear about your foot!! My brother in law has had several surgeries for his hip b/c of infections and I can tell he's suffering so much. I hope your new doc can help ... and quick!! :grouphug:

It was my understanding that guest services will get your passports stamped for you :confused3

Unfortunately, they stopped this a little while back. Too many requests is my understanding. *sorry* :guilty:

WHAT'S THE POINT OF A DISNEY CRUISE IF YOUR KIDS HAVE NO IDEA OF WHO THE CHARACTERS ARE????

I agree. With that said, before DS's first cruise, we didn't let him watch much TV and definitely no movies, so just before we cruised, we pretty much showed him the Disney world (no pun intended) so he'd know what's going on. :rotfl2:

DenoNYC - Welcome aboard!! :welcome: Your DD will definitely see plenty of princesses. In fact, you'll get sick of seeing them by the end of the cruise. Promise.

Re: car service v. bus. I HIGHLY recommend the car service for these reasons: 1) you don't have to wait for everyone 2) If you have a family of 4 or more, car service will be cheaper 3) it's a heckuva lot more comfy. I wouldn't go any other way. :thumbsup2

Re: coffee - the coffee they offer is ok. Certainly NOT Starbucks quality by any means, but more like Folgers that's a bit more watered down. It also depends on the day. With that said, they do have a specialty coffee shop that sells Starbucks quality coffee & specialty coffees. Very yummy. Someone had mentioned that it opens at 12 noon, but I could've sworn it opened much earlier?? I could be wrong on that.

I also saw comments re: not needing passports in Nassau. Is that from DCL or someone's post? I know that the Bahamas require passports to go on any of their islands, so I don't see why they wouldn't require the same to get on/off the ship?? I would strongly urge anyone without a passport to inquire directly from DCL on that one. We always had our passports stamped when we went there before.

Hav a great night, folks!!

I seem to remember the Cove Cafe on the Magic opening early as well (6:30, maybe). They had breakfast pastries in the morning, and switched out to sweet treats during the day. Hmmmmm...

I hope hope hope that the Cove does open earlier! I was getting the noon timeframe from the DCL website, but I know that restaurants can vary.

As for passports, I'd have to find the link again, but because we are getting on and off at the same port (Port Canaveral) it is a 'closed loop' cruise and passports are not required. The question has been asked several times in the main forum. I'll go see if I can hunt down the post that included a link to an official site.

ETA: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2814955&highlight=passport This has a bunch of thoughts on what to do with passports while at the port. But not the official link on closed loops I was looking for.

Here's an article:

This thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=19757232 has comments from someone who JUST went to Nassau and all they needed was the equivalent of a KTTW card and a photo ID. Still, most places say you need a photo ID and an original birth certificate just in case. All I know is, we'll have ours!

Ok, that was just driving me crazy! So I just pulled the Navigators from our November 2010 cruise on the Magic, and Cove Cafe was open 7 a.m. to Midnight.

Thanks, Cindy. Good to know I'm not 100% nuts. I was pretty certain I bought some "yum yum coffee" & got free pastries at the Cove Cafe in the morning as I lounged in the adult pool. Whew. Good to know I'm not 100% nuts. :)

Now that you bring up the thyroid thing...we've had a little bit of a scare going on with Chandler right now. He's got some nodules on both sides of his thyroid. Function is just fine. We don't know what the nodules are. He's had an ultrasound & blood work. We went to the endocrinologist last week for the first time. I think we expected too much of that visit. We were hoping to go in there and have him say, "The nodules are fill-in-the-blank " and then we'd know if we should worry or what the deal is. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. He rules out a lot of things with all the questioning and from blood work. Now it's just a wait and see deal. We go back in 6 weeks for him to feel the thyroid again and pull another blood sample to check function. We do another ultrasound in 3-6 months to look for any change. Doing a biopsy this early isn't the best thing to do because even if it was a malignancy you aren't guaranteed to get that result from a biopsy so soon. For a kid who's that terrified of needles (he nearly passed out from having his blood drawn last week :scared:) inserting one into his neck isn't exactly the best course of action just yet. At first we were ready to run him to Houston to another doctor to look for more definitive answers. My mother-in-law gave us quite a bit of a perspective check when we talked to her about it all. She reminded us of the journey they took with my father-in-law's prostate cancer a few years back. Even when his blood work pointed to an elevated PSA it took 4 biopsies over the course of a year before one came back with an abnormality confirming the cancer. The doctor isn't wrong in his recommendations yet. Still, we may go on over to Houston and get him established there once we know for sure where we'll be living over that way. Just the uncertainty.... :confused3

Oh Kelly, that is so hard!! I agree with Wildforgoofy, kids are just suppose to get scrapes and bruises!! We are praying for all of you during this time!

Wow. After reading everyone's entries today, it looks like you all could use a nice vacation :goodvibes Seriously, though... So sorry to hear about Chandler's mysterious nodules (so sorry Kelly - I can't imagine the worry) and everyone's struggles with thyroid and auto-immune problems. I hope everyone gets to feeling well for our Magical cruise :lovestruc

I had chronic fatigue for years, so I understand about being tired all the time. I started seeing a naturopath a couple of years ago and am happy to say I feel great most of the time now. I also lost 30 pounds without trying that hard (and zero exercise!). I don't see her anymore, but still take some of her supplements. I just love that woman. And if you knew me at all, you'd know how out-of-family that is for me - to love a naturopath. I'm one of the most conservative people I know. But when you feel that bad for so long, you get desperate (especially when doctor after doctor tells you you're fine!). Sending my best to all of you!

I agree it does sound like all of us are due for a nice, relaxing vacation!!

I totally understand, I never thought I'd be the type of person to search out natural and homeopathic remedies, but yes after doctor after doctor tells you that you are very healthy and you feel awful all the time -- you start seeking other things. Good to know that worked for you -- I'll put it on my list of possible things to try!

Ginseng extract & ginger tea top the natural energy supplement list and they have zero negative side effects. :thumbsup2

The unknown IS the worst and am sorry you have to wait and wonder. The only thing I would say is live 1 day at a time and try not to think the worst as that can be the most damaging of all. You can only control what you can control. Hang in there!!

Have you ever heard of a product called David Pal by Mind Alive? http://www.mindalive.com/Products_DAVID_PAL.htm I was never into all the naturalist/hoslitic mumbo jumbo until I was introduced to this product and for someone who's suffered from insomnia, depression and fibromyalgia all my life, this was a life-saver. :yay:

Ok, I'll stop with the dispensation of my prescriptions now.

So did the David Pal help with the insomnia, depression and fibromyalgia? I just don't get a lot of deep sleep and have often wondered if that was the root of some of the problems.

I think we all need a group hug. Ready.... 1, 2, 3 :grouphug:
Let's all think positive thoughts for everyone especially Chandler! Kids are only suppose to get scraps and bruises that we can make better, that's it! One of my favorite shows is Mystery Diagnosis, and it always amazes me how the human spirit carries those people through their ordeal until they finally get the diagnosis.

I'm so excited for our first cruise that it makes me want to shout!:hyper: Thanks for introducing me to the Port Canaveral webcam, now I'm totally addicted. Just watching those palm tress swaying in the breeze is driving me crazy with envy! I was somewhat productive today, I cleaned up the dining room just in time for Easter. Maybe I should clarify that I moved the craft supplies to another room, so is that really cleaning up? :lmao:

I agree! Group hug! :grouphug:

Anyway, I hope EVERYONE is feeling better. I know I am today. Green tea helps a TON!

When we first started going to Hong Kong Disneyland, my girls didn't know a lot of the characters, but they really got into the magic of it all. Who couldn't? They learned about all the characters through meeting them and getting their pictures taken with them! They now love the princesses but have only seen Cindrella and Tangled (and saw they won't be watching that again for a long time) because Fairy Tales are just scary and they are really sensitive. They also fell in love with Buzz before they even knew there were movies of him! But I definitely tried hard to introduce them to the characters they didn't know so they felt familiar. Out of curiosity I had to go look up the thread. It sounded like the mom didn't even know who Crush was! Now we have seen Nemo -- it's not one of the "scary" ones! It is interesting they chose DCL when they aren't familiar with Disney. We chose to do a Disney cruise because our girls LOVE taking pictures with the characters and so we thought what's better then being a boat with characters walking around all the time! And I just love the "magic" of Disney. We stayed at the resort in Hong Kong and I told my husband if it's this magical here, it has to be even more so on the cruise.

Thanks!

:darth:

We don't have first hand experience on the coffee, but my husband doesn't care for sub-par joe either. He has a Starbucks travel press/mug that he likes to take with him along with a bag of ground coffee. Then all he needs is hot water. So, just a thought.

So happy you are feeling better. What ages were her kids???? I know we went to WDW when the twins were 3 and we were saying how it was funny that they hadnt seen all of the movies. They def did know MM for MM Clubhouse.

We dont have passports either. Not needed. We are cleared in the islands thru the ship, so no you dont need to carry your birth cert to get on and off the ship :thumbsup2

No flames here! We have passports, and travel with them for check-in at the port, but we NEVER have brought them off the ship until debarkation. All you will need is your KTTW card and a photo ID. Actually they have never looked at our photo IDs when we have retured, but they are required and I would definately bring the photo ID as well as KTTW. And the photo ID is only for 18 and older, EVERYONE MUST have the KTTW card to get on and off the ship.
