Today is Sat, May 10th and my mom has graciously agreed to watch DD so me, DH and my DF (father) can do the Ft. Wilderness Backpack Trail Segway tour. This was my gift to my father for Father's Day.
Here they are -- all lined up nicely! Kind of scary and thrilling at the same time! Hmmm, I wonder how they work...
We got to the pavilion about 30 minutes early. So I suggest getting a "before" picture. And wouldn't you know it? I didn't know the Segways were just resting on a "kickstand" and when I went over to one for this picture, I ended up knocking it over!
Here are the instructors. The guy on the left Wes, had a VERY dry sense of humor and I ended up being the one he "picked on" in class. The guy on the right, Ron, was just a super friendly guy.
The tour is great and I would love to do it again. I was definitely unstable at first and kept wanting to lean back on my heels (which is how I normally stand and balance). But if you lean back on your heels, you go backwards!!
So I really had to practice leaning on my toes. Then if you leaned too much on your toes (6 mph max), the steering column would jerk back into your stomach forcing you to lean backwards.
Now this was the part that unnerved me b/c it felt like the Segway was trying to throw you back and off of it!
But let me back track...at the beginning, they taught us how to get on, get off, make a 1/2 circle, make a full circle, go up and down hill, stop and go over mulch.
The more you did it, the easier it became...it just took some time for me to RELAX!!
We left the pavilion and went around Hoop De Doo to the Horse Stables where we took a break at the Ft. Wilderness Stables. Although we were not allowed to touch the horses, they could touch us!
I had never seen this cow when it was alive but always heard about her. She has a picture in the stables.
Then we went to Wilderness Lodge and through the campgrounds. At some point, I hit heavy sand and was thrown/jumped off the Segway. That was quite a surprise for me!
I also almost ran over a rat who ran out in front of me on the path. I hadn't mastered stopping quickly yet so just kept going -- thankfully, the rat ran quicker than 6mph!
And then we took another break to get group pictures. Here's the 3 of us:
And finally Ron dared us to kiss while balancing on the segways...remember, if you move your feet forward or backwards, that's where you'll go...so this was a test of whether we could balance on the segways w/o moving
When we got back to pavilion, DH crashed the Segway. He thought it would stand up on its own -- nope! So I didn't feel too bad having crashed one earlier -- and at least that was before we had our lesson!
When we were done, our legs were SORE!!! You don't realize how much you are using your legs -- looks like you are just standing -- but you're not!
We went back to Beach Club Marketplace for lunch and got a dream from a guest. A family was leaving that day and still had 2 CS meals on their key. They gave them to us! Woo Hoo! I had a truly wonderful hand-tossed salad -- the best I had in a long time -- anywhere!
Back to our room we stop to take an Ariel photo
From May 2008
Remember this one from Sept 2007
That night we were supposed to meet up with our friends from Tampa for dinner. We had a ressie for 3 at San Angel Inn in Mexico. I hadn't eaten there before. I called to see if we could add 2 more but was told no. So we weren't holding out much luck.
Along the way we took some pics in Mexico. WDW started this new "roving Photopass" photographer, who could move around with you and not just take the exact same photo again and again.
Oops, where's DD?
Notice Gundther (the bear) in DD's shirt?
DD had some trouble holding her head up with the big hat
We then went up to the hostess and asked if we could add 2 people to our party. They said yes and since our friend had just broken her ankle 2 wks ago and couldn't walk, we got the first table in the handicapped entrance by the water!! This was perfect for DD who could wave to the boats.
The food was -- eh. I didn't really care for what I had (my meat was mostly fat) but enjoyed the chips and salsa and of course the company of friends. Even the dessert (some bread pudding stuff) was pretty bad.
Then we went on the Mexican Boat Ride and Test Track. Here are our friends and DH holding DD's head for the ride.
Our friends were kind enough to give us their FPs for Soarin so we could ride one more time. However, they only had 2 FPs and there were 3 of us. But remember that DD was only 2 and doesn't have a ticket --
so there is no way to get a FP for her!! The CM at the entrance wouldn't let all 3 of us go on the ride. So after I
politely, ok, she just had this snippy attitude and set me off, told her that we can't get a FP for DD but she is tall enough to ride and is coming with us, then she let us through.
At that point, I'm steaming -- how can I get a FP for DD if she doesn't have a ticket? C'mon, let's use some sense!! so I decide to push my luck. Every other time I have ridden Soarin, I always got 2nd or 3rd row. When I've asked for first, they said it was too crowded and you must take the seat you are assigned.
So I thought, WTH? why not ask one more time? And the CM said, of course, just wait over there! Like she does this all the time! Woo Hoo!!
Then DH left to go to DTD/PI since he hadn't used his "time alone" card yet and DD and I snacked on some food watching the people leave the park in front of the big fountain.
Back at the room, I ate my absolute favorite snack at WDW -- the caramel-pnut covered apples. Somehow we got into the tradition of always getting one each trip (using our snack credit) and also taking one home for the next day to help extend the Disney good vibes.
So, while enjoying my apple and watching TV, I reviewed our trip so far. This is the part in the trip with less than 2 days left and I want to relax and go back to each park to see just a few things, swim and shop. But there isn't enough time...so I feel like we have to rush to see everything we missed.
Ideally, I could spend at least 24 days in WDW:
Days 1 - 8 hitting all the parks, the major attractions, taking breaks in the afternoon
Days 9-16 relaxing and doing the minor attractions, shopping and the parades
Days 17 - 24 hitting all the basics again and anything we missed earlier.
