May 18, 2013 Magic EBTA Part Two - From Tejas to España

Still undecided where to stay near IAH!!

Have a hotel booked, but it can be cancelled up to 24 hours before.

I am after cheap, has 2 beds in the room, free airport shuttle, and preferably near somewhere cheap to eat the evening of the 17th, as we will arrive, eat, then fall into bed!

The hotel I currently have booked is Econo Lodge Inn & Suites.

Alrighty all - here's another design based on Mandy's suggestion:

Think this may be the winner :cool1:

Fabulous!

LadyShopper, not sure of the prices, but a few of us are staying at the Marriott at IAH. DCL is doing our reservation so I have no clue about the charges (and didn't even know that was the hotel used until DisBoard members told me!) We're hoping to have a breakfast get together with others before we load up on the 18th for the port.

Agree on the design being fabulous! :)

And I'm thrilled you guys are doing a get together in the IAH area!!! Yay!! :yay:

I did tell hubby about my plan to get up and go watch the ship sail into port that morning. He just looked at me like I was crazy. :rotfl2: He said I was welcome to, that he would be in bed. Poor guys just doesn't get it. It's the last time (that we know of) the Magic will be sailing into Texas. Plus a kiddo on our daughter's soccer team will be on it coming back from the May 10 cruise. Gotta cheer them back into port and tell them to get their booties OFF OUR SHIP!!!!! :rolleyes1

We don't have anything yet set for a breakfast, but on the last thread, I think it was, we talked about maybe doing breakfast. I don't know when we fly in hte night before, so there's a chance we won't be up for it, but we all will be riding the bus together, so it seemed like a fun thing to do.

I think being there to cheer the boat in is an excellent idea :cheer2:. When we first sailed on DCL we had a hotel room by the port. We actually watched the Wonder sail by our window and I cried :rotfl:. DH thought I was insane.

Our flight doesn't get in until around 10:00 pm. But, I'm sure we won't be sleeping in because we will be just too excited. :)

My fear is that we'll be on Pacific time and eating at 8am will be so early for us. However, since we're likely loading onto the bus around 9:15, we'll need to have had breakfast anyway!

It looks like the Marriott has a little coffee shop so we should be able to grab something quick and on the go if we need to. :coffee:

As long as it's enough to top off my kids. Otherwise they'll be grumpy grumpersons by the time we get lunch on the boat :sad2:

What time do you think the ship will come in? We are going to get up and watch it come in port to photograph it :)

Between 6 and 7 am. In September it was later because they were doing some photo opps, but in November I am pretty sure we were docking at 7. I was up before we entered that channel and out on the balcony. You have several spots to photograph from. And, um, not that I would personally know from experience , but you can get out on the docks pretty well to get shots as she goes by to the pier. Back behind Willie G's for sure (look at pictures here) and several other places along that way. I bet we could easily meet in the lobby to sleepwalk down there. You will also be able to see the ship as she is arriving - coming around the bend out to the right.

My first cruise was on the Wonder out of LA. I had found an app on my phone that kept me posted on the time for the ship to come in. A friend that was staying in our room came in at 1am and then the ship very quietly and quite dark came in around three. It was cool to see from the hotel but then I could not sleep after that and for a 3 day cruise being tired was not a great way to start. When we did Alaska we were able to watch her sail under the sister bridge to the Golden Gate in Vancouver, it was not easy to wait for them to get off the ship so we could get on. We were second in line and got to know the people in front of us. I was offered the "family of the day" title but felt the people in front should get it. They were called but the CM let us board with them and we took pictures for them. It was fun but odd to be on an empty ship. Yes I can't believe that I gave up the family of the day but the other family appreciated it and it still makes me smile. I don't think I would even remember them but the memory makes me happy.

I bet they'll always remember you - and you were kind to spread pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust: - that was so sweet!

Thanks so much - that restaurant looks lovely as well! :)

Will definitely meet you in the lobby if you want too, we can discuss it more at the Tremont meet :)

I was kind of thinking it would be cool to wake up, open the curtains and see the Magic there, but not sure if we can do that from the Tremont rooms? Or if they let you on the roof that early?

Think it would be more cool to see her coming around the bend though :)

That's Disney Magic right there, giving somebody else the opportunity! That was lovely of you :)

You helped make someone's day very special! :goodvibes

Some of the rooms may face another direction versus the port, and the bend is definitely blocked by buildings. Because we are the second terminal away (to the left when facing the water), we have a better chance of a good view I think, but you'll still definitely get a better view by walking over there. Lots of areas to go to - and the restaurants on the harbor are closed that early so you have their outdoor seating areas to walk onto.

I will contact port authority that week to get a more definite time. Someone in our "Welcome to Texas" DIS group that met down there was able to call for info when we went in September to watch her sail in. Will definitely update everyone at the Meet-and-Greet. :thumbsup2

Oh - restaurants - there are several right there on the harbor that offer Happy Hour pricing on beverages and appetizers from 4-7 pm M-F. You can make a meal out of the appetizers if you are looking to save a few dollars here and there :)

Haha, this doesn't surprise me. While politics are completely banned from our friendship (if they were involved, there wouldn't be a friendship!), I do know that she went to the same private HS as Obama and I am always teasing her about her Ivy League engineering degree. It figures she went to the best elem school also. I am still upset that it won't be on a beach. I keep telling her she is ruining my vision of a perfect Hawaiian wedding. Since you live so close, maybe we will run into each other!

Hanahau'oli kids pretty much can get into any school they want. Many then go to Punahou, as your friend did. Her wedding will be lovely. A cool venue with much meaning for her, I'm sure. When is the wedding?
