Hoagie, just curious, how did you leave so many things? Where were they? I am so paranoid of leaving things, because I have in the past, that I check and doublecheck, under the beds, in the shower, behind the dressers. I'm alwaysthe last one out--completely neurotic. I left something in a hotel room in Amsterdam when I was 17 and have been ruined ever since.:sad2:

I'm glad you're getting your things back!We left our stroller on the rental car bus here in Chicago, and it's gone forever.I think it's probably circling around the airport in lost luggage pergatory.

Hey I have a question for all you Californian and DisneyLand buffs out there.....

In November I have a conference in Palm Springs (November7-12) and Jason and I were thinking of using our points to stay at one of the DisneyLand hotels before my conference. We'd probably look into flying over and checking in on either Saturday night, Nov. 3rd or Sunday morning Nov. 4th and then check out on the morning of Wed. Nov 7th. This woudl be a first trip for me to DisneyLand and Jason's first time ever even going that far West!!

So here are my questions:
1.) How many days should we plan on being there if we DON'T want our days to be jam packed full. We want to be able to relax (can you swim that time of year?) and enjoy ourselves. So is it better to fly in late on Saturday so we would have three full days there (Sunday, Monday & Tuesday) or is it fine to try to arrive on Sunday and have only 2 1/2 days total?

2.) Which hotel should we stay at? We're using points...so COST isn't so much a factor as is we want a nice room, with a good view, and great location to all that Disney has to offer.

3.) When you're flying there....what airport do you fly to? LAX?

4.) How do you get from the airport to the resorts/hotel? I imagine that Magical Express is a Florida thing only....but is there an equivalent in CA? Or do the Disney hotels have shuttles? Or would we have to rent a car or take a cab or what?

5.) Once we're AT Disney we won't need a car of any kind, right?

6.) When we check out, Jason will just fly back home to Rochester but I will need to travel to Palm Springs for my conference. Is it possible to fly there on a small, inexpensive flight? (And remember inexpensive is relative for me on this trip because work woudl actually be booking my flight from east cost to west...I'd probably only have to pay out of pocket for that small leg of the trip). Or would I be better off to rent a car for a one way (because I'm assuming it'd be easier to fly from Palm Springs back to Rochester rather than try to drive back up towards Anaheim and fly home from there)

7.) Any other advice for a first-time trip there? Attractions? Shows? Restaurants? etc.

Kelly is the DLR guru and I'm sure she'll have plenty of advice, but here is my shot at it:
1. DLR can certainly be done relatively well in 2.5 days, but 3 would definitely be more relaxaing and gives you some "wiggle room" in case the weather is not so cooperative. Also, there are some things like Fantasmic(?) and the fireworks that are only done on Friday and Saturday during the non-peak season. As for swimming: We have been known to have Santa Ana days and it can be warm, but Southern Californian's don't generally swim in November otherwise. Anyone from any place else would think it is plenty warm to swim though - we are just big wimps! If it drops below 70, it must be winter!:rotfl2: In Palm Springs it will be plenty warm to swim! Will you have an "tourist" time there? If so, I can give some suggestions here also.
2. Do you mean DVC points? If so, definitely Grand Californian, no question!! It is the closest of the 3 DLR hotels (all of them are easy walking distance though). It has a great view of CA and a separate entrance to CA. I think you can also have a good view of the DLR fireworks too, but the Disneyland Hotel may be better for the fireworks:confused3 . The Grand Californian is definitely the nicest of the three hotels. If you are using other hotel points, there are also good options.
3. LAX has the most options. John Wayne (Santa Ana) is the closest to Disneyland, and as Susie suggested Ontario is in between Palm Springs and Anaheim if you need to do a roundtrip ticket.
4. No Magical Express here. There are a number of shuttle services though such as Supershuttle and Cloud 9 shuttle (I think). There are probably car services also. Kelly will have info about this, I'm sure. A taxi would be expensive, and a rental car would be unecessary.
5. You definitely don't need a car once you are at DLR and it would just be a nuisance to pay for parking. Everything is a few minute walking distances from each other. The one reason to rent a car would be if you had a rental for the week to get to/from Palm Springs.
6. There is a number of commuter flights from LAX to Palm Springs, but it would be on a puddle jumper. By the time you got to LAX, checked in, etc, flew to Palm Springs, got to your conference hotel, driving would probably be easier. You will be driving midweek mostly reverse morning commute, so traffic really will not be too awful. I would recommend driving to Palm Springs rather than flying. It is not a bad drive and the freeways between are pretty easy to navigate. As for flying home to Rochester either Palm Springs or Ontario are good options. You will be on a smaller plane out of Palm Springs, but driving back toward LA from Palm Springs on Sunday night/monday morning can also take hours and hours of snailpaced traffic, especially if there is an accident.
7. Definitely make PS ressies for Blue Bayou. We eat here whenever we can. Ask for a waterside table. Another thing would be the Fantasmic Dessert Buffet. This also requires PS ressies and are hard to come by. We have never done it, but it is on the list of "things to do". I'm sure there is lots more, but I need to run to get DD11 from school and my mind is blanking right now ...

On a related note, we may be in Palm Springs the same weekend! We went to an awesome swim meet there last November, and I think the team is planning on going again. The Fall meet schedule won't be out for awhile though.

Susie referred to "john wayne" airport or something...what is the airport code for that one? And are there other airport codes I should try...maybe that are closer?

I just looked at your dates again and realized that we would be in Palm Springs that weekend also. My birthday is the 11th and we always spend it in Palm Springs. I have a restaurant list recommendation for there also. However, things change over so fast there that sometimes you're favorite restaurant is gone on your next visit.

It's also known as Santa Ana (SNA).

OK awesome....i'm finding some cheap one way flights to that airport. That airport will be close and easy to get to Disneyland? We're thinking of maybe flying IN there, then driving to Palm Springs and flying BACK from Palm Springs.

I was completely brain dead, but you know that "piece of luggage" in the room in front of the bed, we never emptied it out. Darrell thought I had it, I thought he had it, and the whole thing was full!!! We always double check, but between our sadness about leaving and getting to the airport, we were preoccupied. I mailed everyone's paper out today so let me know if you like it when you get it. If anybody else needs a copy of the Barcelona newspaper with the Magic on the front, let me know!:)

The disadvantage of asking the locals is that we never fly in and out of these places, but when I google the directions it says it is 13.6 miles and 18 minutes. The supershuttle looks like it is around $12 one way. If you can get decent one-way flights, I think your plan is good.

BTW, if you are staying at one of the Disney resorts, parking is free at the resort. You will be walking or monorailing to the parks.

If you are sold on Grand Californian (and you should be), I have stayed there and requested a Downtown Disney view (less expensive than a "park view"). I had an awesome view of the DL fireworks, but if they are only running for the weekend nights, I would recommend going to DL for the fireworks. All of the rooms at Grand Californian have balconys, but when I had the balcony doors closed it was totally sound proof, so you don't need to worry about park or DTD noise. If you can't get into the Grand Californian, second choice would be the DL Hotel, but let us know so we can tell you which tower to request. I have stayed in two different towers and they were a world apart.

Okay, I have to ask this silly question - were Oscar and Simone dating - I loved them both and they are so cute. By the way, if anybody still wants the paper from Spain with the ship on the cover - let me know - I still have 10 copies left and will mail it out to you.
If you have any more copies of the Barcelona paper with the Magic on the front I would love a copy. Please let me know.

That is all super helpful! Thanks so much. I am waiting on just one other final detail to iron itself out before I make final plans...but we're well on our way!

I have a few more waypoints on my smaller GPS but they were ones I used in the various ports.

Thanks Scott! DD11 can use these in her science journal for school. Most days we (I) wrote the info from the Bridge Report, but we (I) missed a few days.

Hi,
Hope you don't mind me posting here. I hadn't realised this thread existed until I saw all of you on the ship. Our paths did cross on numerous occasions and I think I can remember one or two of you.
Debbie if I have you right we were the couple who were always behind you in the lines?
Michelle2 I'm pretty sure we were in the same tour bus as you and your family in Gibraltar (the bus had a dodgy looking plastic bottle holding up the seat near the door)
We also saw you all having a ball doing the fins at the Buffett night. In fact we are lurking in the background of this picture: http://www.imagestation.com/5279126/3912824463
And finally I think some of you were on the same return flight to London Gatwick as us BA2487
You all looked to having such a great time made us wish we had checked out the thread before we left.
Hope you don't mind me posting this and hopefully we will be onboard in the future and share a beer..:cool1:

Hi!!! Yes... behind me in line is the place to be!

Stick around on the thread. We will be enjoying our trip for a long time and you can join in! If you are cruising again, go and see if there is a thread for that one and jump on in.

Cynthia & Michelle - So sorry for your loss.

Debbie

Hi everyone. Home and still recovering from the B2B. Enjoyed meeting everyone and hope to sail your way again some day.

Does anyone know here the photos of the sail away party taken from Jetty Park are posted? I never found the chance to track them down while still on board...

Hoagie Pie -- Thank you for the beautiful front page of the paper. It was so nice of you to take the time to send a copy to so many of us, particularly so quickly after we got back. I'm still unpacking and you are sending out deluxe packages in the mail -- sheeesh!! The photo in that paper really sums up this trip of a lifetime. Pure magic.

Thx again and check your snailmail for a token of my appreciation for your effort and kindness.

Cynthia

P.S. If you google the name of the paper and the word disney, you should get a link to the e-version of the story. Before you go to that page, you have the option to "translate this page." That will give you a general idea of what was written in English .... Disney's first visit to the Barcelona port, etc..... but it is a software machine doing the translation. Anyhow, as they say, a picture says a thousand words so the big photo on the front page does it for me. And of course, this souvenir is priceless. Thx again.

What is the name of the paper?

:rotfl2: God question Anita (Kaptainjack don't worry that is excatly the type of thing I would have done).

I am looking at teh lvoely copy Sandi was so nice as to send me and the name of the paper appears to be al Periodico de Catalunya.

Hello Mom Rules!

The name of the paper is El Periodico -- check my spelling tho' -- it's been mentioned a lot on these threads but I was responding to Hoagie Pie who had said they weren't sure what the spanish text in the article meant.

So, not sure if you want to see the article or get the translation ... or both!! hee hee. Here's what I did:

I went to google and entered: El Periodico Disney

Then, about 3 or 4 listings down (look for the web page www.elperiodico so that you go to the paper's site) you should be able to make out a heading about the disney magic. Before you click on the site, you may see a link that says Translate this page (or something like that). Click on that and choose your language and you'll see an e-version of the story and get an idea of the English text. But the big paper version is just awesome.

Thanks again Hoagie Pie. It's great.

Mom Rules: hope this helps! C.

Good Morning!

This morning Good Morning America was broadcasting live from Castaway Cay! It looked as good as it did 4 weeks ago :)

So far they have visited the bridge with Capt John. Showed Palo, and had a Pirate and Princess fashion show at the Goofy Pool.

Ahhhhh.... to be back

Debbie
