Yes, my second choice would be the Mission Beach/Bay area (as I spent many an early morning rowing on the bay). Belmont Park has an old wooden roller coaster, which is a short and jerky ride, but fun. The Bahia and Catamaran are quite nice with nice beachy bay property. I think there's also still a river boat that goes between the two hotels.
The Hotel Del has always been my favorite hangout, though I've never stayed there. One of my best memories of my younger single days was having drinks out on the deck over looking the ocean watching the sun set. Now, in my married with kids and a dog days, dog beach at the north end by the naval air station is where we hang out! It's a close to Castaway Cay heaven as I can get without a ship!
Since you have a car, you have more options. There are also smaller hotels that aren't exactly on the bay or beach that are nice. My DIS friend from Iowa wished she had stayed at the Embassy Suites, which is across from the Manchester Hyatt. There's a great yummy BBQ place there, too, called Kansas City Barbecue--where the piano scene in Top Gun was filmed!
I think it's high time I take a vacation in my own city!
I have been going to the Del since I was a kid. I just love it even though it is really changing. Did you see the book they had out called "The Loveliest Hotel You Can Imagine? I have a copy. The book consists of letters written by a little girl named Noel according to her letters and drawings of the Del from her 1892 visit. We have many, many family pictures of stays at the Del.
I love the beach area in front of the Del also. We have been to the dog beach also when we did a road trip years ago with our dogs.
Love that BBQ place also. Top Gun is one of my oldies but goodies favorite movies.
Samantha has booked us for a graduation dinner at Jordan at Tower 23. Have you been? She says is one of her favorite restaurants in San Diego.
