A Friend, a ‘Good Listener’ and a Victim

By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ
Published: April 17, 2007
BLACKSBURG, Va., April 16 — Ryan Clark was known as Stack here on the rolling campus of Virginia Tech, an amiable senior memorable for his ready smile and thoughtful ways.

He was studying biology and English and had hoped to pursue a doctorate in psychology, with a focus on cognitive neuroscience.

He was among the first victims of the deadliest school shooting rampage in the nation’s history. Neither Virginia Tech nor the police here have identified the victims. But students and the coroner in Mr. Clark’s home county in Georgia confirmed his identity.

A student resident adviser at the West Ambler Johnston Hall dormitory, Mr. Clark was apparently rushing over to investigate what was going on when he came upon the gunman, said a student who lives on the fourth floor, where the first shootings took place.

Tall and thin, Mr. Clark, of Augusta, Ga., was well-liked and a member of the university’s marching band, the Marching Virginians, students in the dormitory said. The band’s Web site has an image of him participating in a food drive and says he enjoyed, among other things, “making t-shirts with his partner in crime, Kim Daniloski, and haggling with street vendors.”

Courtney Dalton, who met Mr. Clark two years ago when they worked together at a campus restaurant, described him as helpful and a good listener. “When I was upset about something, he would come over and ask, ‘Are you O.K.,’ ” she said. “If you ever needed to talk about your problems, he’d listen.”

Ms. Dalton said he stopped working at the restaurant shortly after they met but continued to stop by and visit. “I used to talk to him every day,” she said.

Ms. Dalton said she was stunned by his death. “It’s horrible,” she said. “It’s hitting us all pretty hard.”

It fell to Vernon W. Collins, the coroner of Columbia County, Ga., to tell Mr. Clark’s mother about his death.

“She was in shock,” Mr. Collins said. “It started out in disbelief. She was praying what I was telling her was wrong, and I felt the same way. I wished I didn’t have to tell her that.

“It was horrible, you know, to walk up to somebody you don’t know and tell them they’ve lost a loved one. It’s the hardest part of my job.”

Mr. Collins also had to break the news to Mr. Clark’s twin brother, Bryan. “I explained as best I could what limited information I had,” he said.

“There’s no way you can sugarcoat that somebody has died a tragic death,” Mr. Collins said. “They knew, when they saw us there. I could hear the TV in the background talking about the incident. They knew. For what other purpose would we be showing up?”

My DD called from San Diego this afternoon. Many of her friends are shocked and frightened about the shootings. I think for people her age it is a wakeup call that you need to pay attention to those around you for signs of mental instability or unhealthy relationships.

It is just so hard for her to fathom someone in such a rage that they felt the taking of so many lives was justified. What answer can I give her?

All afternoon, kids who are scheduled to go to Tech in the fall have been asking the same questions as they have come into and out of my house. As a deep rooted Christian, I have answered these questions the same way I would answer any question on death. I am living this life so one day I can have the hope of going to my real home. When it is my turn to go home, I will go joyfully, no matter what the circumstances, no matter who I leave behind.

You can not live your life in fear. You need to serve and have faith.

I will be sorry for the families left behind, they really need our prayers.

We have heard that Reema Samaha has passed away. Again, nothing is final. Only info from her friends.

Thursday morning I was on my way out to the car in the garage to go to work. I loaded a bunch of stuff in the car because we were going camping that afternoon. Well, on my final trip out, I noticed I forgot to turn off the light, so I jump back up on the 2nd step, opened the door, turned off the light, and turned to go down the steps and to the car. Well, I guess I lost my balance or footing or whatever, but I fell onto my right side, hard, really hard. Thank goodness I didn't hit my head, I was able to stop that with my right arm. However, I did do some damage to my right ankle. I laid there for a good 20 minutes before I could even think about getting up. But I managed to get myself back into the house, the phone, and a chair. Called my husband at work and he finally got to the house about 2 hours later. Seems his boss would not let him leave until he was finished doing what he was doing. Even though she knew he had an emergency. Jeezzzz, for all she knew I could have still be laying on the garage floor. Anyway, we tossed around going to the doctor or the emergency room and finally decided we would just wrap it and try to go on with our camping plans. We made it to Moses Lake later that evening and I was hurting but not horribly. Next morning however was different. I was hurting pretty bad by that time. The next moring, Saturday, I was in horrible pain. On a scale from 1-10 it was a 10. :scared: So we decided to leave. We dropped off my parents and their RV, picked up our car and headed for the emergency room. They gave some percuset (sp?) and took some xrays. Turns out it is a severe sprain on both sides of my ankle. No break or fracture they could see. Doctor ordered me completely off of it for a week. They gave me an ace bandage, a boot, crutches, and a note for my boss. I'm sure he will be very pleased when he reads my email that I will be working from home all of next week. So, that's my sad, sad story. Enough rambling.
OWWEEEE!!! You stay off that ankle and do whatever the doctor says so you can heal as soon as possible!

The Virgina story brings home to all of us with children what a dangerous world we live in and how even places to most of us seem safe can suddenly become dangerous.

I talk to my daughter about relationships. I assume the rest of you have all done the same. All we can do is by example and by conversation help our children through this terrible time.

Very well said. No matter what our religious conviction may be one can not live a life of fear. My deepest condolences to Reema Samaha's family.

My MIL's 80th birthday party was a huge success:goodvibes It was held at my SIL's and was a surprise. We all told her it was a wedding shower for my DD (it actually WAS supposed to be a shared birthday/shower day but someone else had already planned a shower that night for my DD so we just stuck to the birthday) . My MIL took her gift for my DD over to my SIL's a week in advance and kept telling everyone all about the shower LOL. So she was expecting all of the out of town relatives and friends. etc but what a surprise for her when she walked in and we all yelled "Happy Birthday" :rotfl2:
We all helped out by bringing "potluck" and had a wonderful day together.

Sounds so wonderful! I can just imagine her surprise and joy! :goodvibes

We used to have these pineapples on the end of our four poster bed, I would pull one off every time I had to investigate. I bet I would have scared a lot of burglers with my pineapples!

:rotfl2: Envisioning a wild-eyed woman, wearing bathrobe, hair standing up from deep sleep, hefting a big pineapple! I'm sorry, but the image just crackd me up! :rotfl:

I hear CHOCOLATE helps too! (Ingested, not applied!)
Chocolate is the cure for everything! :worship:

Fairfax County (that is where we live) closed schools 3 hours early because of the high winds (60mph)....we have lots and lots of temporary classrooms in Fairfax County and they were worried about them blowing over.

We have a media room in our house. Right now there are 10 seniors in there watching the VA Tech news and playing a game. 7 of them are supposed to go to VA Tech next fall. They are all boys, so I think they are trying to be tough....I hear laughter....but I know they are all a little scared.

Daniel goes to the largest High School in the state of VA...Westfield HS. There are 1,000 kids in his graduating class. 80 of them were accepted at Tech. Last year 40 kids went to Tech. I am just praying for all these families who are getting bad news now.....

This is just killing me inside.....so sad........

I immediately thought about you Lisa, when I heard the news. So sad. I'm glad you're home safe, but this must really have shaken you up.

Welcome back. we've all missed you.

Well I'm glad it was nothing serious and I'm certainly glad you're back...we always miss you!!! We managed to chat a bunch still, have fun catching up!:hippie:

Welcome back Holly!! I know what it is like when you are unable to get your inernet "fix"!

:surfweb:

Couldn't get caught up here when I was at work.....actually had TONS of work today. Very busy. Internet back up and running at home, but Tyler and I went out straight from work and didn't get home until bedtime. Just now trying to get caught up.

Anybody seen "Firehouse Dog" yet? I thought that might be cute.
Tyler and I just saw Firehouse Dog today after work. Absolutely wonderful! The only bad word was H-e-double hockey sticks a few times, but he didn't even notice. Great movie.....my eyes got leaky at the end. Tyler loved it too.

:rotfl: I haven't seen that anywhere, but London streets can be a nightmare to cross, so I will look out for them when I next go!!!
I think when you look down, it's painted in the streets "Look Right". However, this was in the late 80s, so it might not be like that anymore. Pretty funny though!

It is just so sad that the our world doesn't seem safe. You send your children to school and assume they will be safe and then something like this happens and rocks your reality. DD's elementary had 2 lockdowns this year (1 time due to a gunman in the woods across the street (ended up being a hunter) and 1 time because a high speed car chase ended in the area and the driver was then running and had a gun)! We live in a rural area about 45 minutes from any big cities.

We had lockdown for a week at one of the schools I was subbing at because of a threat of a child snatching (custody issue). Just made me tense all day. There's just so much going on these days that we never had to deal with as kids. No wonder my DS is seeing a therapist about anxiety issues.:sad2:

I am crying so much now....22 dead.....28 injured. I was at all of these places all weekend. I can't believe this. I heard this at 10 in my car and I called my DS best friend. He lives in Pritchard. We hung out there (next to West AJ..the dorm that was shot up). He was just getting up right when it was being announced to the public. He said all the alarms were going off all over the campus and they have PA system thoughout the entire campus. Matt said it was repeating over and over "Take cover"

Norris Hall (the Engineering Building) is right next to where we spent most of our day. It is such a beautiful peaceful campus..I just can't believe this
So very, very sad. But I'm relieved to hear that you and Daniel were out of there before this all happened.

I am just honestly so numb from reading all of this.

Amy and I went up to Cleveland tonight to the Apple store there, after three years the hard drive finally failed in our old Powerbook, and I made a trip to the genius bar to get it confirmed, and sent off for repair.

On the way up we were talking about the events of today, and how we all want to know more details so that we can try to understand why this happened. The sad truth is that even when we get these details, we will all still wonder why this could happen.

For many parents, the thing that we all fear the most has happened to their children. It will take great faith, and lots of love and prayer to make it through such senseless tragedy. Whether they know it or not Lisa, your friends and the families in Virginia have the prayers of parents around the country hoping to give them strength to pull through.

Tomorrow night we are attending an honors ceremony at our son's college. He is being inducted into the equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa at his University. I am sure that the young people there will all be in a somber mood, as they will be at colleges and Universities around the country.

I am way behind and I don´t think I am trying to catch up this time, but Carolyn told me that someone mentioned the earthquake we had a few nights ago.

We are all well, thank you, it was a big scare, but fortunately nothing happened, what makes any earthquake worse is that a lot of people remember the 1985 earthquake when a lot of buildings fell and lots of lives were lost.

When dh and I honeymooned in Acapulco, there was an earthquake (lots of earthquakes originate in Acapulco and that coast, so you can really feel them there) and our hotel room was in the 16th floor. DH and I ran to the stairs the moment it ended, we definetly didn´t want to catch another one in the elevator since earthquakes often have a replica.
Glad to hear you and your family are fine! We were all worried. Thanks for popping in to letting us know! :goodvibes

Here is a picture of Reema in Arsenic & Old Lace last spring at Westfield HS. She is in white.

Prayers to all.

Thanks Noel.

I think a lot of parents who will be there tomorrow night will be thinking of parents just like them who lost their children today.
