Tammy I'm rooting for you on this one too. I've been told we should be able to have an independent study for our kids (5th & 2nd graders) if not more than 10 days of absence, but I'm totally worried about our STAR testing (CA state tests) Our kids are the top of the class and our school has a very high immigrant population and therefore has a very low ability to maintain high test scores (which of course are tied to NCLB amoung other things these days) so every top end child really makes a huge impact if they are not counted....I will pursue getting them to test early if that is an option as one person mentioned here. I think you (& we the rest of us) are wise to investigate these issues early to make the best case and plan for our children.

Off to bed now talk to you all tomorrow.
I was hoping the STAR testing last day would be May 9 - do you think/know it will be later? My school doesn't have any rules on absense (their budget isn't dependant on the state - contributions make the bulk of it). So I'm not concerned about missing school as they don't lose funding. But I know they will give me an awful time if we miss the testing. It is always after the first week-end in May I thought - May 12 sounds like it would be late to start. Maybe it is different in each school? :confused3
Thanks, Lisa

Marilyn,

From what I have read on the thread before about the only way to do this is to re-register. You will start all over on your post count but since you are still fairly new that might not make a difference. Just be sure to tell everyone when you post that you have changed. That is what one of the guys on our 11 night SC thread did.

Carol

Ah right, thanks. On other boards I just emailed/PM'd admin or the owner and they did it. I suppose this is such a large board they can't do such things. I guess I can live the the 'gran' bit, after all I will be one to 8 after September!!!

This time last year ......we were in Orlando!!!! Wish I was there now.

Me too. It was DH's birthday yesterday and we're usually away on leave, but we went away at Christmas instead so we just had a couple of days off at home. Last year, sunny Port Orleans Riverside ... this year, wet and miserable UK. :sad2:

Krispy Kremes on the ship!:rotfl:

I love Krispy Kreme and am so glad we have them here in the UK at last. But they have to be hot off the line otherwise they're just not the same. Now there's an idea for the new ships, install a Krispy Kreme 'donut theater'! :) I don't suppose all that hot oil would be a good idea on a rolling ship though. :scared1:

mmmm...stop talking about krispy kremes.....please!!!!:guilty: ;) They have them at Paddington station now, so if we've been up to London for the day we HAVE to buy one for the journey home!;)

Maz, you'll be able to give us a hula hoop demo on the ship!;)

The vision of a bunch of us with those yellow shirts and hula hoops doing that Australian dance - now that would be a site. :rotfl:

Don't feel bad, we are grandparents to 7 boys from 20 to 2 (1 set of twins) and are expecting our eighth grandchild by March 30th. We got a very pleasent surprise with this one, though, we are having our first girl.princess: Love our boys but are very excited about having the girl. I am sure she will be spoiled.

Congratulations. March will be a great month for you.

We have twin grandchildren too - very, very cute little 5 year old girls! :cutie: Our 7 at the moment are 2x8 year olds pirate: princess: , 1x7 year old pirate: , 1x6 year old princess: , twin 5 year olds princess: princess: and a 3 year old pirate: . I don't think we will know what the next one will be till he/she is born. Christmas just gets more expensive.

I heard DCL considered this for the Magic and Wonder, but abandoned doing so for the reason you mention.

I love this catalog but have never ordered from it. How is the quality?

Karen

I can't remember for sure if I've ordered clothing from them--I think I have. (I've been on a shopping diet;) since I retired). I don't remember ever being dissatisfied. For myself, I wouldn't hesitate to order from them.

BTW, in case it hasn't already been posted (I'm catching up right now), the website is casuallivingusa dot com.

Just trying to catch up a little bit today.

It's actually a nice day here today - fairly warm (relatively speaking only) and the sun is shining. Tomorrow we are supposed to get snow and freezing rain just in time for afternoon rush hour. Not looking forward to that at all.

Used to have Krispy Kreme donuts here but they've closed most of the stores. We have Tim Horton's instead. Didn't actually like the Krispy Kreme donuts but since I'm not supposed to eat donuts at all this was a good thing. Too sweet for my taste.

Lisa-that's what I'm hoping too...I'm hoping it's the week of May 5-9. Our has always been in the first part of the month. I'm thinking that's a state standard. The boys school will be OK with missing the 10 days, but like you, they'll give me heck if my then 4th grader will miss the STAR testings. Our school is in the top 10 in the state, and top in our county so the Principal is firm about no one missing the testing! We'll see what happens...we're going regardless! :scared1: (I'm such a rebel-lol!)

I'm telling ya, you're the "go to" girl! I'm going to check the link out...thanks Noel!!!

You are welcome. It appears though the site only gives the 2007 dates. However, you may be able to email or call for the 2008 dates.

We took Alex out in 2nd and 3rd grade. In addition to the packet of missed school work, they asked her to do a journal. We went one better and did a photo journal in a Creative Memories album, we just asked for an additional week to turn it in. It was such a success that they asked to show it around the class and the principal also enjoyed them both!

She took notes during the trips and in one journal we typed them up and included the notes in the back in one of the pocket pages. The teacher and principal really loved them! Her other journal had her notes on actual journal pages for a 7 x 7 book that we brought with us on the trip.

Karen

When we took our daughter Jamie out in 2003 for 2 weeks to go through the canal, we took pictures and then when she returned to 6th grade after the trip she did a power point presentation to the class with the trip through the canal. It was a hit and she got an A+++. She leared alot more going through the canal than sitting in a hot classroom.

they use hot oil for french fries don't they? My other request for the new ships is hot buttery popcorn in the movie theater. I hate watching movies without my popcorn!

Ok - finally getting down to start getting all the info together for the bracelets.

If you haven't sent me a pm yet, and you'd like some let me know how many you need and size (small, med, large). My goal for this week is to get some cost ideas down.

Need also ideas as to what to have on the bracelets.....do we want something said on both sides (if so, what do you think we should have on there?) I was thinking on 1 side the dates, 2nd side Ship of Thieves DM (or something like that) with maybe a skull and crossbones symbol. I think they will only allow up to 20 characters per side....so we may have to do some tweaking.

Once we get closer, I'll probably be asking for addresses to mail the bracelets out to....don't send that now, please....I'll let you know what I need closer to that time.

Hope all of this makes sense....

I don't know how the STAR compares to the WASL (WA state test), but ours is usually done for the 2 weeks immediately following spring break. That has always meant it was over by the first week in May. Of course next year they moved spring break forward a week which moved the WASL forward! :headache: I have already talked with the school secretary and the principal about trying to ensure that the 4th graders are done by the 8th. We were hoping to take the red eye out on the 8th and spend the 9th in florida getting ready (ok, get one quick day in at WDW:banana: ) . I won't know an answer for a bit, and luckily plane tickets won't be ready for purchase until end of june. If they aren't done until the 9th...would anyone else think it is cutting it too close to fly the red eye from seattle on the 9th and land at orlando around 8am on the 10th?

Does anyone else's kid's school think you are crazy asking these kind of questions already?! :rotfl:
