Smart Car Day!
We were up bright and early this morning to go and pick up Mrs. Fezziwig, our "orphan" Smart Car.
The people who originally ordered Mrs. Fezziwig, decided that they really wanted a Cabriolet model which is a convertible. However, they were too late as the build process had started and she was delivered.
They decided they didn't want Mrs. Fezziwig and preferred to wait for a convertible.
Oddly enough, she is nearly identical to the car I ordered, with the exception of missing 2 small options I had wanted. I was facing a 12 month wait, so I opted to "adopt" Mrs. Fezziwig.
Took much longer than I thought it would at the dealer, but we said goodbye to the 1998 Subaru Forester, and drove Mrs. Fezziwig off.
We did a bit of shopping today and I was a bit unprepared to have drawn so much attention to us with people honking at us.
At one point at an intersection, we quite literally stopped traffic.
I did not grow up with cars. My father never knew how to drive a car. As a child, in my entire family only 1 person knew how to drive a car, my aunt.
I did not learn how to drive until I was 28 and moved to Chicago for a job. The job entailed flying around the country, visiting customers and setting up their back office mini-computer systems.
When I was hired, no one ever bothered to ask me if I knew how to drive or not.
In a space of 3-weeks I got my learner's permit, took a flurry of driving lessons (I actually learned how to drive in Chinatown in NYC), got my Illinois License and bought a car.
Because I did not grow up with cars, they have never meant very much to me.
This is the first time I have ever bought the exact car I wanted. The really funny thing is, that for me, Mrs. Fezziwig, is a "sporty" car. Maybe I'm having a mid-life crisis.
Consequently, I am just not used to driving a car that draws any attention from anyone.
