Maxed out DVR hours

1TB of storage is good for up to 144 hours of HD.*
1TB of storage could instead be used for up to 1350 hours of SD.

So, figure, roughly speaking, an hour of HD hours takes up about nine times as much space as an hour of SD.

_______________
* (For folks doing sbell's math: 1TB inside + 1TB external X 2 DVRs = 576 hours. I'm not sure where they're going to store the extra 4 hours. :))

I am disgusted with my Comcast DVR's. For some reason, if I tape a show without taping the entire series, it starts taping and it NEVER STOPS! You can even change the channel and it just keeps on taping whatever channel you are on. If I'm watching I notice this and stop it, but my kids don't. It wiped out almost everything that was taped when this happened the last time because it was an HD channel that was taping for about 24 hours. I have had 3 different DRV's on 3 different TV's and it happens to every one. As long as I tape the series it's fine, though. When I called Comcast the girl acted as if I was crazy.
This a known bug in iGuide. Hopefully they'll provide Comcast a fix someday, and then Comcast can provide the revised version of iGuide to you.

It typically happens when you do have a series recording for a series and also try to record it manually. Are you sure that's not what is happening in your case?

That's exactly what is happening. If I have it set up at a series but it doesn't record because I have 2 other things taping, I will set it up to record at a different time. I can't believe that they didn't know about this when I called Comcast if it's a known bug. Thanks for the info!

You'd be surprised how few people use the series recording feature. It isn't surprising that a few CSRs don't know about the problem.

My personal preference to avoid the problem was to use one approach or the other; not try to mix the two. If something doesn't record as a series recording, then cancel the series recording before setting up the manual recording.

This is one of the reasons why people are willing to pay $700 extra for a TiVo. This technology is a lot more complicated than I think a lot of folks give it credit for; when companies offer a lower-cost approach, like Motorola DVRs running iGuide (instead of TiVo DVRs for $700 extra), it is practically assured that consumers will get a lesser experience.

By the way, here's a link to the description of the bug:
