We bought my 5 year old bunks beds three years ago when he was ready for a big boy bed and only assembled 1 bed, we are now ready to complete the bunk bed and need a twin mattress.

Here's my problem, we don't need the box spring and the stores that we have been to will only sell them in sets or they charge an additional 40% to buy only the mattress. Any suggestions for somewhere in the Detroit, MI area? It is for the spare bed so we don't want to spend alot.

To our advantage (maybe) we also need to purchase a full-size set for our 3 year old who is moving from the toddler to the big boy bed.

Thank you!

I have successfully used a phone order business 3 times. I haven't just ordered a mattress but I know that is an option. PM me if you want details, better yet, I'll just PM you the info.

Do you have a BJ's, Sam's Club or Costco type of warehouse shopping club? We bought mattresses from one of them (a few years back) and I believe they were sold seperately. We also recently bought bunk beds from JC Penneys and we got just matresses for them through JCPenneys as well.

Seems to me that any place that sells bunk beds should also sell just the individual mattress. Do you have Mattress Firm up there?

We just bought bunk bed matresses yesterday from IKEA. I also saw them at Sam's Club.

I bought a really comfortable twin matress for my daughter's trundle bed at IKEA- It was only $49

Also, if you find a store that sells daybeds, they should sell the mattress only (that's what I had when I was a teenager). IKEA is also a great bet because most of their bed frames only require a mattress (they give you wood slats to act as a box spring.

Don't go to a mattress store; go to a store that sells bunkbeds and/or daybeds. They'll have what you need.

Straitlover, have you shopped at Mattress Firm? Any comments, good or bad?

One thing to realize is that all the $ of a mattress set is in the mattress-that's where all the steel and labor is incurred. In most inexpensive sets, the boxspring is just a wood box-no metal or anything. Anyway, the store I manage sells mattresses separately, but they are about 80% of the cost of the set. Happy shopping!

I looked there recently when I was mattress shopping, but I did not buy from them. They seemed OK enough (the guy didn't seem to be that excited to sell me anything, though); I got a better deal from Fred's Beds, so I bought there instead. A lady from my church did buy from them. She was pleased with them becasue they let her return the first set she bought. She is kinda petite, and her husband is a really tall guy. She was having to hold onto the side of the mattress to keep from rolling to the middle! :rotfl: So, they let her return that set, and they went w/ the Tempurpedic set instead. They would not refund any money, but they did get 2 Tempurpedic pillows to make up the difference in price.
