Matterhorn closing???

I wonder what is up with the FL side. It was down for a few days while we were there.

I really hope that they only have to close one side at a time when the install the new bobsleds. Fingers crossed anyway.:worship:

I'm thinking that, like the article says, if the new bobsleds are a tight squeeze for anyone over 6' feet tall and over 200 pounds, it would be impossible for my 6'5" hubby to fold himself into them. But what will be will be.....although so many guys are over 6' tall.....I find the confines of the new bobsleds perplexing in today's world of bigger, taller people. I mean the average height for a man is approx. 5'10". Six feet tall is only 2 more inches over average.

It also really depends on where the height is. If their height is all in their torso it might not be too bad. My husband (also 6'5") has it all in his legs/feet (wears a size 18 shoe - so we're actually afraid his FEET won't even fit) and I can tell from looking at it that it would be tight at best. Most likely won't work. This makes me sad as we all LOVE Matterhorn!!

It sounds like most of you arent very tall, I am 6"2 and heard that the new sleds may make it hard for tall or big people to ride. I am a little worried about that, I love the Matterhorn and it would really suck to not be able to go on it again.

This worries me, too. At 5'11" I'm the 'runt' of my family and we all love the Matterhorn! You'd think they'd have figured out after having to redesign the Small World boats that making things smaller may not be the best idea. :confused3

Going to DL June 10th. Hope this ride is opened by then. Heard only good things about this ride. First trip to Disneyland with my daughter and can't wait for a fun vacation!!!;)

:furious::furious:

While talking to a cast member last week, she confirmed it will go down for awhile. Because it's not that safe, honestly. You can apparently undo your seatbelt at any point, thus they have to replace or update this system.

Over here in WDW, Splash Mountain went down for a while to add lap bars. Made me sad. :/

I continue to find it suspicious that Disney's calendar does not work after July 10.

Couple that with the unprecented closure of a major ride for refurb right in the middle of summer and I am not convinced this summer-long closure is actually going to happen.

I have checked the calendar 10 times over the last week and the rumored Matterhorn closure is something I have not seen personally but others have seen only fleetingly.

Very unusual...

That is really strange Hydroguy. I've been able to see up until July 13th for a few days now and it shows the ride is down...:scratchin

Why is it not safe because you can undo your seat belt? To be honest you don't even need a seat belt. If you are sitting in your seat there is no way the ride can throw you out, it simply isn't fast enough, nor are there any drops that would make you leave the sled if you are sitting down.

I've ridden the ride many times not belted in and was never in danger of leaving the sled.

Some day soon it will be clear I suppose. Right now I can see dates posted to July 13 but when I click on July 11 or after it shows dates in May. Last night I could not even see dates after July 9. I am using Internet Explorer 8.

I can see the calendar past July 10. I'm using Safari and am having no problems. The schedule that was posted a couple of posts up is what it is showing for me too.

That is not very smart. A lady died on the Matterhorn. She was thrown out of her car and it was determined she was not wearing her seatbelt. This is at least part of the reason why they are rehabbing, to change to a different restraint system.

Please, please, please don't ride this ride without your seatbelt. It is dangerous. Here is a link to snopes about this death (it was very gruesome): http://www.snopes.com/disney/parks/deaths.asp

I will cross my fingers and hope that Matterhorn will be open during my visit, although I won't hold my breath.

I actually don't mind them closing the ride for safety reasons. I'd rather the ride be safe than someone get injured. Even though I am bummed that I can't go on this ride, I'll deal. Can't wait to try CS, instead.

*pats you on the head*

You're thinking about the ride under normal conditions when it is operating safely. But let's think about physics and motion, okay.

During the ride, you are traveling at the same rate of speed as the car (max speed is 27 mph). But what happens when something stops the ride dead in its tracks? Suddenly, the car stops...but your body is still traveling the same speed because the impact stopped the car, not YOU. That's when the seat belt comes in handy. It'll prevent you from face-flying into the front of the car or out of the car and onto the tracks at 27 mph.

Everyone is chiming in about how this must be a necessary closing, for safety reasons.

But - um - why would they wait two more months for a safety-related closing? Wouldn't it be closed immediately if it was unsafe? I would hope so.
