Matching shirts...cute or dumb?

Yep, we are one of those Disney-only matchy families! It started as a way to easily track my children but it's morphed into a tradition. I will be sad if/when my oldest hits adolescence and doesn't want to do this anymore (actually, though, it's more likely to be my second son who eventually balks!). 50% of the time, it's just the boys dressed alike and 50% all five of us alike.

I admire those of you who design and make your own shirts. I order annually from tiedyeusa.com getting enough to make their wholesale minimums so the shirts are ridiculously inexpensive and then pick up Disney Store tees when they are on sale.

We just returned from a long Cali trip that included 5 nights at Disneyland where matching shirts are not as common. We were stopped 5-10 times a day by or talked in line with parents who thought it was the greatest thing. And, guess what, PP neon green hater ... by FAR the shirt that people admired the most was a lime green tie dye spider number we all wore. LOL! Didn't meet any dis'ers though.

If it's an entire family or a group of children all wearing matching shirts, then it's cute. If it's a couple, then no. (imo)

whoa, there are some rude responses in this thread. :headache:

i posted earlier, and i just want to say that i'm the youngest in my family, and will be 19 when we go in january. i don't think many 19 year olds would want to match their mom and dad. (but you know, there's always exceptions.)

and like i said, i understand functionality. if you have a group of 5+ with children and all.

DD and soon to be DSil will be at WDW for their honeymoon in Aug. I recently gave them matching Disney tees with their names on them. I hope they don't think they are too 'dumb' to wear.

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

We did matching shirts one day on our last family trip....and my children are college age. They liked the idea because the day we chose to wear the shirts was my son's 21st birthday. My husband was actually the one to pick out the color, the design and he made the shirts. They do look nice in the picture.

Although my favorite picture from the trip, we don't match at all!

We are toying with making a shirt for our upcoming cruise on the Wonder just so we have nice boarding pictures, and we did buy matching shirts for MNSSHP, because we really didn't want to dress up. LOL, we bought glow in the dark Son of Svengoolie shirts. They are pretty cool. :lmao:

Since I'm the one who has a 14 year old and 6 year old and it was mentioned by another poster, I just have to ask ... So, folks think that having solid color matching t-shirts with a small graphic on the top front left for my boys is tacky? I'm glad my kids don't think so! We think it's fun (and practical) to dress alike when you're in the midst of crowds. But, hey, that's just me. To each their own.

And, fyi, it's lime green, not neon green, and it's the color that represents this board. Think of it as proudly wearing your school colors. I'm obviously not a fashionista by some standards, but do I know there's a difference between lime and neon. I learned that from my trusty old box of Crayola crayons.

OP and Princess Tiffany, the shirts and outfits are too cute! Love it!
twinsdad -- would love to see your pics!

My parents took our whole family two years ago and my mom bought everyone (14 of us) the lime-green Mickey shirts to wear. I thought my DH would revolt! He had never been to WDW and was apprehensive at best. I knew he would wear his on the designated day with some good-natured "I can't believe I'm really doing this".....anyway, it was fun and we have great pics!

We are returning in September -- imagine my surprise when DH announced he would be designing our matching shirts! ;)

Like many others have said, we don't go for matching on any other vacation or anywhere else. Occasionally I have my little girls in coordinating outfits, but I really think it is part of the fun of a Disney vacation. I personally LOVE seeing families in matching or coordinating outfits at Disney. I think it says a lot of nice things about that family; namely, they are all good sports :goodvibes

We wear coordinating shirts (like all MK, EPCOT etc) I've made over 60 shirts for a 17 day trip. Somebody stop me !:lmao:

Don't stop!

I am thinking of doing this for our trip in November. My DD, soon to be 14 yr old, rolled her eyes and I bet DH will too but like many posters...my goodness it's DISNEY! Give me a break, not like we are going to be strolling the mall in our town looking like that..no one will know us or care! :rotfl2:

As pp said, we have suitcase full of Disney apparel we wear just at the World but it's not matching. It is fun to wear the Mickeys and Goofys and Grumpys and DH enjoys it just as much as the rest of us. But when we get home, it goes back into the WDW suitcase until the next trip. (He does have a subtle Mickey tie he wears occasionally:rolleyes1) I might get him to do matching shirts one day but I think I'll wait until we have little ones with us. As others have said, it makes great sense for keeping track of others. I used to run a day camp and we always wore matching shirts on field trip day!

Same with us. It was 12 years between trips for us, so DH and I have a "vintage" wardrobe now. He got some compliments like "Wow, I haven't see a shirt like that in years!" from the long-term cast members. For our summer trip, he'll be breaking out the Figment Epcot Center T-shirt!

But, we never go out unless we are wearing a shirt with a Disney character or some pins of the characters.

For our summer trip, I plan on making our matching shirts in white cotton only!

When we went this past March, I made two sets of matching shirts. I tried to make a third, just for me and my DS 13, but it didn't work out and I didn't have enough time to fix it! We were meeting our DS 16 following his HS band trip. He wasn't enthusiastic about wearing matching shirts, until I reminded him that "dad and I have paid a ton of money for you to go on this trip, and the least you can do is wear the shirt I made!!!"! :lmao: Nothing like a little guilt. So one set was for the only day we'd be together at the parks (DHS, but I let him change into his own shirt when he performed at American Idol) and one for when we boarded the Wonder the next day. We had a few CM comments, no pixie dust, not that we expected any, but it sure was fun. Hopefully, here are the pix (it wasn't working for me yesterday):

I never thought about pulling out the vintage shirts. I have a Figment shirt I got back in '98. I've just been wearing it around the house. If it doesn't have any holes in it I might have to take it with me when we go in September.

Hi!

Wearing matching outfits is not my style at all. I think it's cute on children and twins but not on adults in my humble opinion. I like to wear cute outfits and wearing a t-shirt does absolutely nothing for my body type. In fact it makes women look frumpy including myself. Wearing those type of shirts make me look bigger if it is not tucked in or tied in a knot in the front. But if you want to wear them and you feel comfortable in them by all means please do so. It's just not for me.

Thanks all!

  • Mickey head and a brightly colored tropical flower by one ear (we're staying at CBR)
  • Mickey head with a princess crown (for princess breakfast)
  • Mickey head made out of animal print (for AK)
  • I'm stumped what to do for DHS ......

Any place I can go for more ideas or patterns? Thanks!

How about a Mickey Head made of Film reels for DHS?
