We went to Cape Cod in June of 2009. We stayed in South Yarmouth at the Surfcomber. It was a nice little hotel on the beach. The rooms were really large and the pool was heated and very clean. The weather was awful while we were there. We took a whale watching trip out of Provincetown and froze, but we still had a great time. We took a drive to Plymouth Rock and toured the Mayflower II and Plimoth Plantation. It was a nice trip, and very different from our typical summer vacations.

For those of you coming to New England and are used to warm water, please check the ocean temps before you arrive. When I was kid and went to my uncle's house on the north shore, we all had blue lips from being so chilled by the water. (I don't know the Cape water temps but they're definitely not going to be like FL/TX temps.)

As far as hotels go for Boston, you could check out some of the farther flung ones. You might be able to save on parking (assuming you'll be renting a car since you'r going to the Cape) and the rates are a bit lower. We've stayed at a Homewood Suites on the Cambridge/Arlington line a couple times that might fit the bill.

Last June we stayed at a Holiday Inn a couple of blocks from Fenway ~ it was full of baseball fans ~ and the T stopped right out in front. My DD flew in in (we were there for a wedding) and took it from the airport to the hotel. We drove up and they have their own parking garage.

I don't remember the cost but it was reasonable.

As for the Cape, the water temp varies widely. Old Silver Beach in Falmouth is always warmer. Ponds and pools will usually be warmer than the ocean. My children can swim June - September. I only swim in July and August. I am not a big swimmer though. Do you like to camp? You can camp right at Scussett Beach along the Cape Cod Canal. I love that beach. Nickerson State Park in Brewster is another gorgeous place. There is also the Bourne Scenic Park which is right on the Cape Cod Canal. Hotels prices are outrageous around here in the summer, IMHO. I would look into renting a cottage if you didn't want to camp. I would also suggest taking the ferry (see Steamship Authority website) to Martha's Vineyard one day. There is so much to do here and the beaches really are gorgeous. Have fun!

You can also go toward the Berkshires in western Mass. It is Georgous that time of year with a lot to do. It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Boston.

I would def. opt for the Berkshires over the Cape. We were born and raised in MA before we got the heck out and move to FL 5 years ago. The Berkshires are about the only place in MA that I'd ever want to see again, and definitely the only place in MA where I'd ever take my kids on a vacation. The Cape is too crowded w/local New Englanders and I hate the traffic. Boston is pretty easy to do in a few daysIMHO. The Berkshires are lovely, though. You could go to concerts at Tanglewood and just generally enjoy the area.

Last year we spent the weekend at the Hyatt Harborside for a family wedding. The hotel is located adjacent to the airport, but directly on the water. You are not in downtown Boston, but directly across the harbor from it. We had a harbor view room and never noticed how close we were to the airport. The views of the city are absolutely stunning. There is patio and lawn area with seating outside, fireplaces and bar service. The restaurant/room service had some of the best clam chowder we have ever tasted! We took water taxis which are located right out front, across the harbor to the Aquarium (it took about about 10 mins. and was the kids favorite part of the trip). Once you are at the aquarium area you can walk many places ie. Faneuil Hall or the North End.

As the pp stated it is not inexpensive to stay in a Boston hotel, and this is a Hyatt. But, we all keep saying the whole weekend that having that view of the city was better than actually being in a downtown hotel.

I love the Cape in June and Sept. I vacationed in Truro every summer as a child and love the National Seashore there. Chatham and Maratha's Vineyard are favorites also. But you were given great advice regarding the traffic - avoid Friday afternoon and Saturday. There is alot of Friday night cape traffic heading out of Boston .

Wanted to add that the tour of Fenway Park is pretty cool too, if you're big baseball fans, or fans of baseball history. I think we got a AAA discount.
