Mass shooting in Canada

It's pretty sad.

Aside: is it considered a mass shooting since it was in multiple locations? CBC called it a "rampage" which seems more apropos.

I have no idea about the actual wording.

It is a terribly sad thing. And bizarre.

The final death toll is not yet known, nor are the ways that everyone who died was killed as there were fires and explosions and car accidents. I anticipate there are more victims to be announced over the next few days.

Nova Scotia is a small province where everyone knows everyone. As far as I know, I don't know anyone who was killed or injured, but I know I know people who do.

Yeah, I've worked with a few Nova Scotians over the years. Most from around Halifax but one guy from Truro. I think he lives in the states now.

According to the FBI, the general definition of spree killer is a person (or more than one person) who commits two or more murders without a cooling-off period; the lack of a cooling-off period marks the difference between a spree killer and a serial killer. The category has, however, been found to be of no real value to law enforcement, because of definitional problems relating to the concept of a "cooling-off period". Serial killers commit clearly separate murders, happening at different times. Mass murderers are defined by one incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders. (Per Wikipedia)

Also per Wiki: A spree killer is someone who kills two or more victims in a short time, in multiple locations. The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics defines a spree killing as "killings at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders".

Andrew Cunanan is given as an example of spree killing, while Charles Whitman is mentioned in connection with mass murder, and Jeffrey Dahmer with serial killing.

CBC has a timeline of what they know: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/nova-scotia-timeline-active-shooter-portapique-1.5537756

I think they are still trying to determine where he was between when the police arrived to find the first shooting victims at his home and the nearby house fires at 11:30 pm last night and when he was first sighted the next morning. They also don't mention the police cars that were crashed/burned near Shubenacadie around 11 am which seems to be part of this.

I because they don't know where he was, the police were still trying to determine if there were more crime scenes than the ones they have already found. It's a rural area with lots of small roads and little villages and he seems to have avoided the main highway. If we weren't locked down due to COVID , some of the areas he went to - like the Irving Big Stop where he died - would have been very crowded on a Sunday morning.

Starting to see facebook posts from families and friends of the victims :-( So sad.
