Anyone that can pass a background check can go buy an AR15 or an AK47 in Florida. The ones you can buy aren't automatic like those in the military. Their simply rifles, but still assault rifles nonetheless. Then add in the high caliber bullets that you can buy, you can do some damage.

However this shooter appeared to have an illegal automatic AR15. He didn't buy this at his local gun store unless be illegally modified it. I imagine he got it off the black market.

An assault rifle by definition is automatic.

It is still very early with news reports comming out dismissing previous ones. People have said, witnesses, that it was very fast amount of shots fired not methodical single action rifle shots.

Small club with not many exits. I don't find it hard to believe the shooter could simply stand near the main door and open fire. Reported he had an AR15 and a pistol. It's reported it was fully automatic so he could just hold the trigger and spray. If he's proficient in his weapon he could have multiple clips and reload quickly. It doesn't have anything to do with people standing still and him taking calculated single shots. You don't have to get a chest or head shot for a kill. So the atmosphere in the club, loud music, people packed in..I can see why this number is so high.

AR15's are semi automatic without modification. Assault rifles are automatic.

About half of all rifles sold are semiautomatic.

The shooter had a Florida security officer license a state firearms license. He passed a back ground check. We don't know how his guns were obtained.

Just tuned into NBC and heartbroken to see another mass casualty. The world we live in just doesn't make sense sometimes.

The latest I heard was that the shooter could kill so many so quickly due to his AR15. He could shoot off high velocity rounds very quickly. Especially due to the close confinement of the dance club it could wreak pure devastation (which it did).

They called it "Internationally Inspired" terrorism. The father of shooter said when his son was in Miami he saw two men kiss and built up a enormous amount of hate. The shooter likely learned techniques from watching terror groups abroad. All hearsay, but that's what NBC was reporting.

My thoughts and prayers to all of those impacted by this terrible tragedy.

If he modified it to be fully automatic, it really doesn't matter how it was obtained. He was willing to violate even the most strict federal laws to build his weapon.

The only way you're going to stop someone that determined to kill is to shoot him, disarm him, or arrest him before he has a chance to carry out his plan.

An off duty police officer was the one who was there and called it in. The DJ was just interviewed and said he didn't hear any gun fire at first and when he finally did he thought someone was shooting off fire works and turned the music down some. He then heard a ton more go off helped people hide behind his booth and sneak out the back doors.

The key is his ability to load massive rounds easily. If he had to thumb in rounds in a dark night club while holding two guns casualties would be 10% of what they were. We can never stop all gun violence, that does not mean we can not reduce it.

OMG! What is wrong with people? My heart is breaking for the injured, dead, their families and friends. Some days, I am utterly disgusted by some of the people I have to share this planet with sometimes. There is so much beauty, wonder, love and awe that can be experienced all around us if everyone would just come to terms with the fact that we are ALL one people, we ALL have the right to live our lives as we see fit so long as we do no harm to those around us. We ALL have to share this one teeny tiny planet that is merely a speck of dust on the grand scale of the galaxies and universe that surrounds us. Is that so bloody difficult to understand? Then people wonder why I spend so much of my free time in Disney World. I need the escape from reality. That's why. I'm off to go wipe my tears. Can't even see what I'm writing. why is it insane? Cars that go 180 mph are legal, cigarettes are legal, alcohol is legal. Just because people can't be trusted w something or they are dangerous doesn't mean it ahould all be illegal, if so then most pain meds would be banned because people abuse them.

I grew up w guns, went hunting and went to ranges with my dad and shot very automatic rifles and pretended I was a solder and had fun. I didn't break any laws so why should my rights be opposed cause some jerk has no tolerance for other religions or sexual orientations? Did this dad reach out to his son who saw 2 men kiss and say "are you gay? If not who cares? Let them live their own lives and if you don't like it or understand it, it's ok, but people might feel the same about you"

You really think that terrorists care about what laws we pass? If he modified the weapon to be fully automatic, he's already gotten a hold of a weapon that is completely banned in the US. If you try and ban certain magazines, a terrorist will just use banned magazines.
