This is a question for anyone who has done the marriage-license-by-mail bit with Brevard County. DF and I started the process yesterday and have already received the thing back that we need to go get notarized and send in.

That said--I don't think I totally understand the entire process. When I read through the laws, it almost makes it sound like we have to file the marriage license after the ceremony at the same court house that we got the license through. Does my officiant have to drive all the way to the courthouse in Brevard County (near Tampa?) just to file the license? On their website, it almost looks like all we have to do is mail it back to them after the officiant signs it. Is that really it, or do we have to actually have someone go to the courthouse physically to file the completed documents?

Sorry--dumb question. I'm just confused, and it's late. :/ Trying to figure out if it's really worth it to do it through Brevard County, or to take the time once we get in Orlando to go to a courthouse. The mail-away one seems so much easier...

The officiant deals with the license after the wedding and then sends it back to you once you're home.

I understand that part. My question is--does he have to drive down to wherever Brevard County is for the purposes of doing the filing? My fiance and I would rather not put him in that position, as he is a friend and my step-sister's boyfriend. It's a long way to ask someone to go from Orlando.

If it needs to be filed in the same courthouse as it was obtained (Brevard County), then maybe we need to look at not doing it that way).

When you send the notarized license back to Brevard, they'll return it to you with an envelope to send it to them. Our officiant was my brother, so we just mailed ours yesterday from the Beach Club lobby.

I don't know of any state in the US where this isn't the case. The final, signed License doesn't need to be filed in person, but I've never heard of being able to send one obtained in one county to a courthouse in a different county...
