Marriott or Hyatt in Vancouver

Hoping those who have cruised from Vancouver before might be able to advise...

We have both Hyatt and Marriott points so which of these two hotels would be better for the night before the cruise in Vancouver? I believe there is the Marriott Pinnacle and a Hyatt Regency. How do you transfer to the port from these hotels?

Alternatively, would anyone suggest that it is worth ditching the points and paying the cash for the hotel right at the port so that there is no problem with transferring?

As background, we will not be travelling "light". We will have 4 suitcases, 4 pieces of hand luggage and a wheelchair. There will be two adults to manage luggage.

I'll be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

EC

If you can swing Hyatt Regency Club, do it.

It is an easy 10 minute downhill walk to Canada Place. So the taxi ride won't be much different.

For future repliers, it may be important to note if one of you uses a wheelchair at all times or if you are taking it along to use as needed. We have points at both hotels so I am interested in the replies to your inquiry also.

Have a wonderful cruise!!

Good point. He has stamina issues so a strenuous walk isn't happening for him but up to 10 minutes level walking (or downhill I guess) would be fine.

Thanks for advice so far.

We stayed at the Hyatt for 3 nights before the May 22 cruise this year and it was awesome. We took a cab to the port (maybe $8? It wasn't much) because we didn't want to walk with our luggage. It is a fairly short walk though, we walked down to Canada place a few days before the cruise.

I live here so I haven't stayed at either hotel but the Marriott is closer to the port. Just a very short walk. With the wheelchair perhaps that hotel has a shuttle since it's so close to the port?

I only mentioned the walk as a way of showing how incredibly close it is. Not to suggest doing the walk with a wheelchair. :)

No, I really appreciated an idea of the walking time; gave me a sense of what to expect. Also reassuring that if it was difficult to get a cab, we could get there under our own steam!

Thank you for your help.

We stayed at the Hyatt and took a taxi to port. Short drive but the ride with tip was less than $10. He dropped us off underground right where they took our luggage. I didn't want to try to walk it with just me and my 9 year old. I wouldn't walk it in your case either.

BTW the hotel was awesome. Great staff and close to train and places to eat. There is a small mall attached for anything you might have forgotten to pack too. Have a great trip!

We also stayed at the Hyatt and loved it! We only had 4 bags and a 2 backpacks but our boys were useful enough to help (ages 5 and 7 at the time). Loved the proximity to the port and local attractions. There was a Tim Hortons next door among other quick eats nearby. We walked to the ferry that takes you to Granville but took a taxi back (it was a good 30 minute walk). And yes, 10 minute walk to port. Taxis were fairly easy to come by - we never had to wait more than a couple minutes.

We didn't stay there on our return as our flight left later that evening but we walked back to the hotel from the port and they happily bag checked our belongings free of charge while we toured the city some more (we had about 6 hours until we needed to leave for the airport).

That's great: thanks everyone. Looks like strong preference for Hyatt over Marriott!

That's another thing under way...

I'm late to the this thread, so... We stayed at the Marriott and loved the view from our higher floor room. We payed extra points for the harbor view room (and $'s for the third adult in the room). DH is Marriott Gold, so occasionally that gets us slightly nicer rooms. We could see the Olympic cauldron and watch the sea planes take off from our room. It was a 4-6 block walk to Canada Place and the Wonder. Either the Hyatt or the Marriott would gladly get you a cab.

We stayed at the Hyatt for two nights pre-cruise and one more night post-cruise in July of 2015. Good room, efficient service. Our only problem was a bit of a wait for our room to be ready when we arrived about 9:30 am post-cruise, but that was only about 90 minutes so actually quite accommodating considering the stated room ready time.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency for 1 night before a cruise last September. I was already in Vancouver with a tour group, so I met my husband at the hotel. My husband took the SkyTrain from the airport to the hotel (after transferring stations at one point), and the hotel is very close to a SkyTrain station. We also walked from the Hyatt to Canada Place with our luggage.

I too prefer Hyatt's location (Robson street). Note, the adjacent Skytrain station does not connect to the airport's Canada Line. The airport Canada is a 3 block luggage drag. Still better than the Marriot.

If you're going to the Hyatt from the airport, you can take the Canada Line to the Waterfront station, then transfer to the Expo Line and get off at the Burrard station - next to the Hyatt: http://www.translink.ca/en/Schedules-and-Maps/SkyTrain/SkyTrain-Station-and-Elevator-Maps.aspx

We're arriving in Vancouver by train (rather than airplane). Would we need to get a cab the hotel whichever we chose, or could we get Canada Line from the mainline railway station?

Just grab a cab. Super easy (they line up in a controlled queue outside the train station) and not badly priced.

Sounds like @edna is arriving by Amtrak. The cab is the easiest for most hotels.

There is a subway station outside the Amtrak station. However with luggage.... you might appreciate the convenience of door to door cab convenience.
