Fat Tuesday is February 28, 2006 although the festivities start about 2 weeks prior USUALLY and kids are out of school usually from about the end of the week prior to and until the day after Fat Tuesday. However, considering the conditions in New Orleans and the other areas that normally celebrate Mardi Gras, this year will inevitably be much different than past years. Our state has been devasted in many ways. I've heard they are talking about bringing more of the festivities to our northern part of the state but until the people of New Orleans can get their homes and city really back on track, Mardi Gras won't be the same and I don't think you'll feel any effects on the crowds at WDW.

So the week around the 28th is when Disney will be celebating then? I looked on Disney's official site but they didn't have any date posted yet. We went to PI last year and had a blast and would like to go again in 2006.

They've cancelled the Mardi Gras Ball held yearly in Washington D.C. due to the tragedy of the hurricanes. I'm not sure Disney has made a decision or if Disney will have any celebrations this year.

Yes, I am from New Orleans and my house got lots of water, so I'm coming to you from Houston, TX, home of the Astros! Hahaha, okay I'm a nerd, anywayz, yea I think Disney World is going to be even less crowded this Mardi Gras, and possibly even the whole year, with all the hurricane craziness, I don't think many people wants to go to Disney World under these circumstances. Me and my friend and my friends mom on the other hand, are very excited to go to WDW, we look for any opportunity to go, hahaha, so this is no exception. :earboy2:

Mobile Alabama will have Mardi Gras as scheduled. It promises to be exciting and fun so if you want to go to a great celebration go there.

Mardi Gras in Mobile - what fun. :rotfl: Until New Orleans is back on it's feet there is no TRUE Mardi Gras.

I have a friend fro Mobile and would LOVE to go down for Mardi Gras one year. From what I understand, Mobile has REAL Mardi Gras. . . New Orleans is more tourist Mardi Gras.

Most of the schools in southeast LA will indeed cut their Mardi Gras holidays short due to make up days for Katrina. Therefore, I do think the usual S. LA contingent will be much smaller than usual.

Also, off topic, but although I think Mobile puts on a very nice Mardi Gras, the only people who make N. O. Mardi Gras "more touristy" are the tourists. The locals know how to make it a family affair.

It is a lot of fun. Mobile, Al actaully had Mardi Gras first (although New Orleans Residents will disagree) and we gave the ideas to New Orleans and helped them to get it off the ground. The one in New Orleans is more touristy so it is the one everyone thinks of, however, Mobile has parades for about 2 weeks, a cornation and balls. It is fun!!! If you ever get the chance go to Mobile's as there is a lot less crime and just as much if not more fun.

I apologize if my post last night sounded like I was slighting Mobile in particular. I'm not. The whole idea of Mardi Gras is based on the Catholic religion. It is meant to be an act of purging (aka partying) before Lent. That's how it started. I'm sorry, I just assumed there weren't a lot of Catholics in Alabama and is why it's roots were in New Orleans. I just think in light of what all in the Gulf states, Mississippi, Louisiana, and southeast Texas in particular have been through recently that there may be parties just to say, "We're still here" but that there is really not much to celebrate this year.

I'm from New Orleans and I really don't know what's gonna happen for Mardi Gras, I have heard that it's gonna be up and running this year, we do get a lot of money from it, so hopefully the parades will be a-rollin' this Feb.

I heard that Jefferson parish said they will let any krewe that wants to roll from New Orleans roll there this year. New Orleans is also saying they will have Mardi gras - how big is yet to be determined. I know the big Krewes such as Rex, Zulu, Bacchas, Endimion, and Orphelus are vowing to roll this year.

As an advocate of Mardi Gras I am pleased to hear that New Orleans (and Mobile, my birthplace and original home) will have a celebration in 2006. Let the Good Times Roll!!!!! For those of you who have never been I suggest checking out both celebrations.

I ride in one of the Mardi Gras Krewes in New Orleans, and we will be riding. Some areas of New Orleans were not flooded, or received only minor damage, and are rebounding quite nicely. Other areas may take 2 - 4 years before they come back (ninth ward, New Orleans East, Chalmette).

We are making it a point to give the kids a break from spending 35 days in a hotel room, having to spend 4 weeks in a school in SHreveport, and then moving back to New Orleans. The kids are just as stressed, if not more, than the parents.

I would expect a pretty good crowd during Mardi Gras.

nola dave,

I too, have decided to ride (since all of my "stuff" is already paid for) and would LOVE to throw my fellow dis'ers something...please stop by on your way to "the World". Our city desperately needs your support!

Lafayette, La. has made no changes to my knowledge (I live here). The festivities are more family oriented (no flashing :rotfl: ). I expect larger and better parades due to the influx of New Orleans residents (we have well over 10,000 new residents in the Parish) :wave2: . :goodvibes

Give New Orleans 1 to 2 years. I know enough people from that area. The city will return, bigger and better.
