This will be my first and final year of marching for various reason (I hate band my moms forcing me to do it for my freshman year... Most of my friends have already quit or will quit after freshman year...)

cool. i have to go back for my evening rehearsal in an hour ;). marching for 8 hours a day in the hot sun takes a toll on your body though. i prefer my evening session, because that is when we incorporate the music (memorized), into our march, as we learn new steps.

Aww. I <3 Marching Band.

Instrument: Trombone
Years you have played that instrument: Really 7 years..it's been 12 since I first learned, but I don't play much anymore
Year: *cough* College graduate. I'm old..23, but I miss band a lot.
Do you have marching band "camp": Well..I did...

I was a brass sergeant my junior year and brass captain my senior year.

My senior year, me and some of my friends got the hot idea to make our own separate marching group. We selected our own music, and wrote our own drill. We even had extra practices on the weekends and off days from regular band practices. I was SO busy, but it was fun. We even competed with our group at a festival.

We were also chosen to march at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta my junior year, and got third place in parade marching out of like 19 bands. It was also A LOT of fun. :)

*Sigh* Sometimes I really miss it. :sad1:

Instrument: Drum Major
Years you have played that instrument: This is my first year, but I have played flute for 7 years and mallet percussion for 3
Year: Junior
Do you have marching band "camp": Band camp was a few weeks ago.

BUT every time is see this thread I think of Marching Bands of Manhattan. ^_^.

Instrument: Trumpet (Co-Section Leader)
Years you have played that instrument: This will be my 9th year.
Year: Senior (12)
Do you have marching band "camp": Yes, it was Aug. 4-8th from 8:30-5.

Marching should really be considered a sport. People think that all you do is walk around a field playing notes that just come out of the instruments by themselves. If they watched actual drum corps. maybe they'd realize just how much goes into it. The fact that a quad player's heartbeat goes 2x-3x faster than a normal person's proves how athletic one must be. Rawr.... :sad2:

Darn skippy!

What are all of your commonly used marching band terms?

mine:

mark time
harch and set
heel-toe
toe-heel
guide right/left
forward, march

Marching band is definitely a sport. It takes a lot of stamina to hold up your instrument and blow through it, maintain perfect posture, and run around the field for 10 minutes or however long your shows are.

and the fact that you have to memorize 4 pieces (at least in my band), moving to the precise spot from memory, and keeping up with the other bandmembers. marching band works your brain, and your body.

I have marching band again today, and our first game tomorrow, but I'm not going.

I have no clue what the commands are because we have so many. It just clicks when they are called.

Oh!! Detail. That's one. We have to spread our legs shoulder length appart and put our head down, and take our left hand put it in a fist, and put it behind our back while our right arm is at our side.

What are your guys shows this year?? We are playing the music of the doors. 1.Touch me
2.Light my fire
3.Peace Frog/Love her madly
