March 10, 2012 - Eastern on the Magic

If like me, you are trying to make your own FE...in limited time (ah)...I might have a suggestion.

Went to Joanne Fabrics and Michaels this week. They are selling a shoulder purse that measures 8in across for about $3 each (in black or white). They are in the iron-on section. I bought 3 to attach to each other vertically.

You can iron or sew on designs to your liking. I bought some iron ons representing the 3 of us in the family for each "pocket bag." I also found some iron on pirate attachments. THere is some ribbon on sale at Michael's for about $2 and walmart had a nice selection on disney buttons, bows and ribbons.

Hope this helps!

See you guys in THREE weeks!
(OH and 3 weeks and 1 day till my birthday - woohoo!)

Hi Everyone,

I have made some changes to the FE list (changed a stateroom, added some names) and have sent it out via email. We're all familiar with the drill now ... if it doesn't arrive, lemme know! :)

I will be bringing some extra copies of the spreadsheet onboard. Also, our room is on Deck 2 right near the Edge, starboard -- we will have a fully decorated door, so you can't miss it. If you miss me at the meet, and still need a copy, just leave a note.

Welcome Imacanuck -- greetings from the GTA! I have added you to the Roll Call on page 2.

I still have a few projects to complete. I am making journals for DD and her friend, using pages developed by someone on the creative section of the boards. We're also going to have a magnet making party next weekend for the two of them.

Thank you SO much for organizing this. I know it must be time consuming!

For the people you haven't heard from, are you just waiting for the room numbers, or are we unsure if they are still participating in the FE?

Yes, thank you so much Papertraveller!!!

I took the day off on Friday to make my FE gifts and I was so happy that they turned out great! I'm very excited to give them out!!! I also have Monday off (holiday) and my DD and I are going to be making magnets for our door and doing some shopping for the cruise!

We are all soooo excited!!! This will be our first "true" vacation as a family (just the three of us) -we go visit family a lot, but we don't ever take the time to do a trip with just us.

I have a quick question for those of you who have cruised before... What do you do with your cell phones? Do you get an international "plan" for a week? Will they even work? (TBH -I can live without it, but my DH doesn't want to be out of contact for emergencies) How do you contact family/friends back home if you don't have a cell phone? Thanks!!

I am so sad I missed the boat on the fish extenders I wish I knew more about it ahead of time. my son would have loved it. Do people bring extra stuff ever so we can half be involved, I completely understand it is not possible for the homade gifts. I would love to participate even if it is a very small scale. Any suggestions? and can someone explain to me the program in its entirety? For example the process of hanging things out?

I only have posted now 13 messages so I still cant send inbox messages yet, I am hoping to post more along the way

thank-you, sorry I am such a newbie

Does anyone go all out dressing up for pirate night, at what extent do I wear a costume? Will I look like a fool for a full dress up???

You are very welcome. We haven't heard from the others at all (no stateroom number, names etc.) so there isn't much we can do. I'm sorry about that.

My pleasure! You will be amazed at how the luxury of time on the cruise just helps ensure that everyone has a great vacation.

Can't speak to the cellphone question. I lock the BlackBerry in the safe once we're onboard, and it doesn't come out again. I guess your service provider would be able to give you the best info on international roaming plans.

I do know that if you want WiFi access in ports, the crew is the best source of information.

Hi. If you send me a PM with your info (names, stateroom number) we would be happy to drop off a little something for you and DS! I can also circulate this to others in the group, on the understanding that not everyone will be able to do this, since it is past the deadline.

There are a lot of threads on the board about the FE -- but essentially it's a group of people who agree to drop off little gift to others throughout the cruise, sort of a Secret Santa. There is a Fish ornament outside each room, where DCL will leave notes and other materials for you. The DISboard folks buy or make a fabric panel with pouches on them, and hang from from the fish -- thus Fish Extenders.

(DH and I just had a funny conversation. Just how do you explain the contraption we hang outside the room? A panel? A scarf? Stocking? Pockets? Pouches? We couldn't come up with it, and he just turned and walked away! :rotfl:)

As soon as we lose our cell service and see that cellular at sea is being used, all our phones (6 of them) go into the safe. This is usually a few miles out to sea from Port Canaveral. If we need to get in touch with family/friends, we use the internet cafes to send emails at the port stops. Much cheaper than the internet offered on board the ship. I have allowed my girls to use their cell phones to take pictures at times. They select airplane mode on the phones so that no calls/texts can go out or come in. We took a family friend a few years ago who didn't observe our suggestions, and boy did her mom and dad have a bill when she returned.

There is also an emergency ship number in your documents that were mailed to you. You can give this to friends and family, in the event they needed to reach you for an emergency.

I personally love having the vacation from our cell phones!

Is anyone else super worried about doing beaches on our own given how CROWDED the islands will be? The port traffic shows something like 8ships in on our day at St. Maarten!!! We really don't have any plans after noon on St. Maarten, but I'm afraid of the traffic if we get a cab.

Has anyone been to these islands during spring break time? Am I just paranoid, or do you think that if we left the ship after lunch for a couple of hours on a beach we would be ok?

How much time would you allow to get back?

I know you sent this post a while ago I am leaving St. marrtin all together to go to Anguilla, it is supposed to be very easy to get to just a 20 minute ferry ride away and way less crowded and most unbelievable beaches

This will be our 6th Disney cruise and I can honestly say that on all of those cruises we have seen everything from not dressing at all like a pirate to those that could win a Pirate costume contest. Don't worry, you will fit right in regardless of how you are dressed.

We will be dressing up. When we cruised last time I thought more people would dress up. Our table mates which was fun. Don't worry about what others do. Just have fun

On phones- we shut off and place safe. I do use at international rates if needed but I keep the calls short. It is expensive.

We will be dressing up. OK, so they will be halloween costumes pirate:, but even DH said yes to it. I can't wait...

 19 days!!!! and I'm still not done with all the FE gifts.... need to get in high gear, and fast...

Funny to see all the Canadians on this cruise, I can say that since we're one of you, even if we are living in the USA.... this will be so much fun.

This one is for the ladies... I was wondering if it's hard to get an appointment for a mani. I've been doing my nails with funny/funky designs for the last 6 months or so and was hoping they could do the real deal and have a real Disney :wizard: design on them....

See you all real soon!!!!

I'm not sure what they offer onboard.

A couple of trips ago DD and I had our nails done a nice bright red and asked to have the big toes done with Mickey heads in black. We caused quite the flurry of chatter in the salon ... the attendants all got it (and they did a very nice job), but I think some of the clientele thought I was nuts!

We proudly marched around WDW in our open-toed sandals, and not one person said anything! We enjoyed seeing Mickey every time we looked down, though!

One more thing for the To Do list: book pre-cruise pedicure.

This was one of my first experiment with a Mickey head on my finger nail. Right now, I have white Mickey Heads on 3 out of 5 fingers on each hand with red background (no pictures available)

Would love to have this done on the cruise!!!!

That sounds very nice! Especially if it's via ferry. Where is the ferry located? You have checked the schedule? I may look into that...
