Marathon Weekend Weather

Maybe it's been winter here too long, but I don't mind the way the weather looks. I'd rather be extra sweaty, then have frozen toes and be running on snow covered sidewalks...:rolleyes1 the real Dilemma is what I'll wear after the race. I usually wear compression socks and jeans, but that surely won't won't happen if it is 80 out. I hope I'm not the only one walking around the parks in compression socks with shorts on.

Pair the socks with a skirt instead and you'll look more like one of those sexy Halloween outfits. Sexy post-marathon girl. It's all the rage.

Sarasota weather today, which is still 7 days away and 70 miles away, but it was a nice cool morning for a run and very overcast. Granted, things change in a heartbeat, but today's forecast down here was 59->82, 40% chance of rain. With any luck, it'll be similar for the race...overcast to keep the sun at bay, and nice and chilly/foggy during up till around 9:30 (What it was today). There's still some Florida hope guys....just keep it at hope

Oy, ran 9 miles yesterday here in Colorado in shorts and long sleeves at 29 degrees, and was thinking about how comfortable it was (it was sunny). The current forecast has a start temp higher than the marathon I ran in Denver in Sept! Now why isn't there a red faced emoticon with sweat pouring off of it?

Funny thing is in the 2012 half at WDW I was freaking freezing almost the entire time. I had on stay warm tights, a sports bra, a wick away shirt over that and a stay warm long sleeve thing over that. I finished around 9 I think and was so glad to go back to the hotel room where it was warm... Everyone said that weather was great and I was so cold that I wish I had brought gloves. I guess I'm weird.

Great... My first half was freezing (2010) and now my first full will be boiling!

I am a little worried about water. When I did my 20 miler here at home a month or so ago, it was a warm day. (It was definitely good practice for this!) It was in the low 70's and full sun when I finished. Not as warm as what is to come, but still warmish.

Anyway, I drank three 16.9 ounce waters during that run. During. That doesn't include the water I drank right before I began and right after I was done. And I didn't need to use the bathroom. I was soaking it all up and sweating it out.

I don't have a hydration belt so I've thougth about getting one (at the expo at this point). I have a FuelBelt and an iFitness belt that I will be wearing (both of them, one for fuel, the other for my other stuff). So I could buy the attachment bottles for either one. But, I will need much more than what those bottles can hold.

What would be perfect is if they handed out the individual sized Dasani water bottles. I could just grab one when the other runs out, just like I do at home.

Maybe I'll take one of those huge Dasani's from the table... :rotfl:

That bodes well for you this year then if you tend to be colder than others. :)

I felt it was a bit too warm last year. (I did the half and the first leg of the full relay) This year is going to be hot.

Someone in Florida posted on facebook that it will be in the 70's by 11am! Don't know if that's true, but if so, ugh!

I am also worried about how hot it is supposed to be. I didn't want to run with my water bottles (iFitness hydration add-ons to my belt), but I am thinking it might be a good idea.

Yeah Liz, I am also so not happy about the heat!! It will be a definite test for me and my MS. I will be really watching and try not to over do it. However I do still have that energy going. Crossing fingers.

I was thinking of taking a small water bottle and maybe fill it back up if I need to from the water stations. I like your idea also with the hydration belt.
I may pick one up also.

4 days to check in!!

I had a rough time with the heat at the DL half this year, so I'm going into this weekend with a plan to slooooow down and not do anything to strenuous the day before the half.
Aside from the runDisney meet up, that is...

I agree completely. Just did our last "long run" this morning after a dusting of snow during the night.. not exactly pleasant. While I understand the dangers that coincide with running in the heat, I would much prefer such conditions to watching my every step so that I don't break my back on ice. Not to mention the frigid wind. I've had quite enough, thank you very much.

And I say go for the socks+shorts.. we'll all be looking ridiculous afterwards anyways. Who cares? :goodvibes

I definitely would if I were you.

Yeah, that's another option I'm thinking of...I could bring a Dasani with me to the start and just fill it up at the stations. I'll have to carry it and that will be a lot of filling up, but it is what it is. I don't want to spend money (on the belt bottles) if I don't have to. And the bottles would have to be filled up, too.

We'll see what I decide once down there...

Even though I trained in 70 degrees indoors I know that being outdoors is a different scenario. Humidity too. I worry about hydrating correctly on race day. I trained by drinking similarly to how it'll be offered in the race, but still.

Anyway, at least I like my race photos better when I can wear basic shorts and a tee rather than when I'm dressed for cold in 2 pairs of pants, ski hat, and gloves, as I was in 2010! But if it gets too hot and I look like a sweaty tomato, maybe not...

I definitely plan to run with my Nathan belt--I use it for any over 10k. For the full, I will drink from one bottle, then when it's done, I will refill at the next water stop or so.

Just make sure you grab a cup or two and move off to the side out of the way of the other runners coming through. For that reason, I tend to refill at one of the latter stations so that I can step to the side.

I know this is obvious but worth repeating......

If you are running with your own water supply and need a refill, head to teh very end of the line of water tables and then head off to the side. If you ask the volunteer, they more than likely will offer a bottle to fill your bottle rather than pulling cup after cup off the table. Ask First.

Even More IMPORTANT

Just because it is looking warm for the race do not overdo hydration. Take fluids at each stop if the temperatures hold but not to a point of excessiveness. Still drink to thirst and stick with a fluid rate that mirrors training rates. Do take a sport drink at every aid station, consider taking the sport drink over plain water... that depends on you and your training. If you start to feel sloshing in your stomach, discontinue the sport drink and skip water at an aid station or two.

THis is not the heat of summer and is not a crises but it is a situation where you need to think.

1) Slow up. You do not want to travel any faster than a training pace and may want to move slower.

2) If you run/walk, consider adding 30-60 seconds to the walk from interval 1.

3) If you start to feel ill, stop at an aid station.

4) This is the year to avoid NSAIDs (Advil, Motrin, Aleeve, Apsirin, etc) starting the day before the race and up until you can urinate normally post race.

5) Start working on hydration NOW. Keep you urine nearly clear through the week. Do not go overboard with hydrating.

6) Wear a visor (With a dark color under the bill), sunglasses, sunscreen a short sleeved or no sleeved top that is white. For goodness sake, do NOT wear the race shirt this year. The sleeves, color and sizing in the material may cook you.

7) The day before the race, stay off your feet as much as you can - but if coming from a cold, dry climate, spend time outdoors. Staying in the air conditioning will not help climates you. Keep a water bottle with you and stay on top of hydration.

8) I know I said this... pay attention to hydration. Keep ahead of it, but do not go overboard. Both directions are not good.

Hope this helps

So I did my 5 miles today at 10am. I didn't check at the start but when I finished an hour later it was 70 degrees, 82% humidity and sunny in Tampa. (I was expecting clouds so when the sun came out a mile or so in I was surprised.)

A few observations...

1. Definitely need to focus on hydration. I lost more (water) weight during this morning's 5 mile run than I did during my 20 miler.
2. Might want to add sunscreen to the packing list.
3. Going to go with a sleeveless shirt and visor instead of shorts sleeves and a hat to try to stay cooler.
4. My pace was about 30 seconds slower than I would have like for that distance.
5. But on the plus side...I may actually be able to use the resort pool!!! In fact I hope to be in there exactly one week from right now!!! :cool1:

In a warped sort of way, all sorts of things--including the weather-- are conspiring to get me to approach Goofy with a different mind set than my usual races. They want me to go slow, take it easy, have fun, stop and smell the roses (which, technically you could do with 1-2 detours).

Now all I have to do is just listen, put my ego aside (as they say in yoga) and "release the outcome" (as I once learned in a corporate training class--and it WAS a useful concept)

Maura
Maura, I hope you can manage that. My problem is I really cannot go any slower.
...It looks to have one of the 4 warmest start temps since 1998. Worse, it looks to be one of the three highest highs for a marathon weekend. The start temp has only been warmer than 57F three times and the high for marathon race days have only topped 78F twice since 98. For the record, the warmest start was the 07 marathon with a start temperature of 67F while the warmest finish was 2007 with a high of 84F. The second hottest marathon weekend was 2005.

I have a confession. I have stayed in OKW for the marathon twice in the last few years…. 2005 and 2007. Please, no stones.:rolleyes1

...There is an old rule of thumb that says if temps are above 65F you should look to modify pace. There is a secondary rule that says if the combination of Temperature + Humidity > 130, you should consider adjusting pace. With the latter rule, one could be looking to pull back on pace at the start in many of the forecasts below… A race start of 55 with 90% humidity yields a 145 so one should think it over. In a half, I probably would not adjust but for the full I would think about pulling back just a bit; depending on the forecast for the end.
Coach Charles, I hope you enjoy OKW (I say with a hmpf! added.) I have been pacing about my throw away needs and will still bring something to curl up with while waiting to start. My suitcase just got lighter with this weather report. Dang this is not happy weather for me.

Ok, Charles, if you're going to give us the bad news for the weekend, the least you could do is add the fourth day and let us know what we'll be dealing with during DATW on Monday. hint, hint :)
I predict PERFECT rehydration weather. That would include hot, cold, foggy, sunny, and even diluted.
I am all over this one!

I guess that water bottle I always carry on my belt will get a good workout Sunday.

I like that plan. I don't want to be weighed down with three water bottles....I will take one and fill it at the water station (off to the side of course) and also drink water whilst there too. Then I will have a full water bottle between water stations...or gatoraid.

Sounds like I'll have to double-up on my M&M McFlurry with the heat now expected.
