Marathon Weekend Weather

Anyone think that Disney may have a contingency plan for pre-race to help keep us warm? Maybe bring in busses we could wait in, or bring over a bunch of those outdoor heaters?

Disney would call that "Race retreat" that you should have paid for!!!!!

I can't see them doing anything, there are just too many people. Even the medics on the course do not get any heat!!!!!!!

THEY DO! It's called the VIP Tent. They created the tent after the 06 weekend where temps were in the mid 30's. In it's first year, the temps were balmy in the mid 60's.

You really do not wnat to be locked in a bus with the heater on high (which is what the driver will do. You will simp-ly freeze once you get off the bus.

I'm imagining pre-race to be like the scene in the movie Happy Feet where all of the penguins are huddled together to stay warm. "We all must take our turn on the outside!" :rotfl2:

That's kind of what it's like. You will notice that if you are in a group of 3-4 folks you will all of a sudden have 10-15 folks down wind. Folks huddle downwind of the lighting generators behind tents; any where to block the wind. I am on the Gulf coast. It's not pleasant to wait but it's really not all that bad either. Just look for a flcok to huddle behind

A BIG THANKS to all those that were wishing for cooler temps. I blame this on you!:sad2:

Duane

Guilty as charged. :teeth: However, I wished for COOLER weather, not freezing cold. :cold:

However, if I could choose between what we had 2 years ago and what we may have this year, I'd choose this year. I MELT in the heat. :crazy2:

That would now be 3 years ago! I was looking for cold! mid 30's to low 40's. The weather guys overshot the target.

So much for Global Warming!:confused3

I always thought that global warming ment hotter summers and colder winters......so they are on target.

First I like cold weather and 30F with no wind would not be all that bad. A few of us at the office workout together when we are on the road. I am a healthy sweater meaing if you run with me you keep a couple feet away from the spray. The joke this AM is that much like the Tinman from OZ I may freeze up on World Drive as we haed into the teeth of the wind. My boss was wondering if MCO could bring de-icing equipment for me to run through every 5 miles.:rotfl2:

That is my issue Charles. I too sweat a lot. At the LV race (38 degree start) - the only other cold race I have EVER run, I had a long sleeve tech shirt and a light tech running jacket then another jacket (not a tech jacket but it does have the open flaps). By the time I was finished I was soaking wet inside. The outer layer was dry by my shirt and running jacket were wringing with water.

Now this is a race where I never removed my gloves and earmuffs until the last mile for pictures. It was still in the low 40's by the finish. I couldn't have removed my jacket if I wanted because I was so wet I would have froze.

Not sure what to do this weekend. I am more worried about freezing during the last half of the marathon than early on. I can see it now, I ditch the jacket at mile 13 then the wind picks up....

enjoy,
Duane

Don't drink the Kool Aide That's the new (now old) version. The newest is that the climate will change, we just don't know which direction. So any record setting weather is the result.

I am unfortunately the Director of Climate Change for a company. I think the science is suspect but understand the politics and emotion so we are becoming a little more proactive. It's going to be intereting as COngress atacks (or fails to attack in an election year) the issue. If there is no bill, then expect industry to start pushing for something in 11 to derail the very onerous EPA regualtions.

Lose the jacket and add another layer and/or vest. My cycling vest is in the stack of stuff as of last night.

Completely OT but I just think its the natural life cycle of the planet.

But some would say its my fault as I drive the most evil car of all. :lmao:

Like Charles and Duane, I'm also one of those heavy sweaters. One reason I dislike running in hot weather is the puddle that drips off me and forms at my feet whenever I stop running. Anyway, I think the vest is a great idea. I've got one from New Balance that's windproof in the front to keep my core warm and the sweat from evaporating too quickly and freezing me. The back is all mesh to let body heat escape so I don't overheat. I sometimes run in a jacket but like Duane, I find it doesn't breathe very well and the inside of the sleeves gets wet and clammy. If I could find a more breatheable one, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

It's the arms for me. I have a sleeved jacket that does breath. However, without going into a lot of detail you do get a surprise if you lift the elastic band at the wrist. :umbrella:

The hottest i've trained in was 117 (on the car temp) and I could have been wrung out, but I would rather be out in that heat than how cold its going to be!!!!

I've really been thinking about you. I cycle a lot and have all sorts of joint issues on really cold days. If I recall your speed it in the upper teens. That is going to make your feel real temps head into the single digits.

Lots of hand warmers!

I'm going to take it easy, because of my head, but I'll be holding around 15 mph. I can get up to 21.5 on the strights, but not this race.

I don't have room to get handwarmes in my gloves, and then I wouldn't fit into my hand straps. (My hands are strapped on as I can't grip very well) but thanks to your idea my Dh has just said that we could put them in my handle tubes and duct tape the ends.

I will have warmers in my shoes though.

I was laughing about the "happy feet" and thinking how lucky you all are, we can't do that up at the front!!!!

Just thought of something... if it's going to be or feel like 15F on Saturday, is there going to be anywhere that's warm for me to wait around after the 1/2? DF is walking so I expect he'll be at least 3 hrs. Last year was warm and sunny so I didn't mind hanging around... 15F is a different story, especially in sweaty clothes.

I'm go to the UA shop tonight after my Dd ballett class to try to find a jacket that would work with the arm motion, as I lost mine at the Columbus marathon.

The only place I know of that is heated and free is the medic tent!!!!

I too have joint issues (ankles in particular), and I am now worried about the lower temperatures. Any suggestions?

Yikes! Maybe I'll just keep running and go back out on the course and find him :)

Pack a dry top and sweat pants & sweat shirt in your baggage. That plus the Mylar blanket given out at the finish will help.

I would apply BioFreeze to the joint and go with that. Anything more and you will get into clothing/brace issues that may create other issues. The BioFreeze will feel really cold in the room. That will go away and once you start sweating then it will feel worm. That will help promote a little more circulation.
