I think I said it earlier....We will see the most severe front we have had in a decade in Houston. THis will slide across FL. As long as the winds are from the NW the high pressure area will pump cold across the regian.

:worship: no rain - no rain :worship:

We are in a deep freeze as well - - Hope Houston weather is clear on the 5th (my parents and brother and SIL are flying from Cancun - probably wasnt as cold in Cancun - what a shock!)

I still think its warmer at 32 in FL because there is no snow on the ground - compared to the Chicago 32 with the snow on the ground... it really feels warmer when the sun is shining!

Hope God moves the fronts thru quickly! :worship: no rain :worship: no rain

I'm worried about my feet while we wait. The mesh over my toes is porous - as it should be, but dang my feet can get cold in there. Has anyone used plastic grocery bags? Just something to stop the air until we start.

I'm really worried about the cold weather. I am totally unprepared for the cold. I don't have any tights or long running pants. I haven't even had to pull out my jacket this year. On colder days (high 40's/low 50's), I have only run in last year's long sleeve tech shirt and shorts and have been okay.

I guess I should go out and get myself some tights. I just hate to wear something new. But I guess it's that or freeze! Okay, this may be a silly question... but are there any issues with tights that I should be aware of? Any chafing issues?

Sorry another question, on top I was thinking of wearing my long sleeve marathon tech shirt from last year with a short sleeve shirt underneath. Will this be warm enough if it is close to freezing?

Thanks so much!

Ronda, I've put duct tape over my shoes before to keep out the cold. It's been a while but I think it worked well. It was easy to peel off. Gotta love the duct tape. :teeth:

Being a newb I tracked my MfM runs and came up with this:

Unless otherwise noted these were all early morning, in the dark, runs. No solar warming so it should translate well to Saturday at 5:30 a.m.

52° drizzle, breezy, ss tech tee, cool with the wind
54° drizzle, no wind, ls tech tee, too warm
35 clear, N breeze, ls tee, tights, gloves, earband, just right
44° clear, slight breeze, ls tee, shorts, gloves, earband, hands sweaty
44 fog, no wind, ls tee, shorts, gloves, earband, all good
42° cloudy, ls tee, tights, gloves, earband, too warm
60° partly sunny, 9:40 a.m., ss tee, shorts, just right
34° clear, ls tee, tights, gloves, earband, warm at the end
35° clear, ls tee, shorts, gloves, earband, hands/head plenty warm
39° clear, ls tee, tights, gloves, earband, too warm on walks
41° clear, calm, ls tee, shorts, gloves, earband, goldilocks
40 clear, calm, ls tee, tights, gloves, earband, comfy
57 clear, south breeze 14, tee, shorts, great
52 clear, slight north breeze, tee, shorts, nice
43 clear, slight south breeze, ls tee, shorts, gloves, earband, good
50 misty, Pilgrim Pacer 10k, tee, shorts, cool at the start, goldilocks later
41 light rain, after work, ls tee, tights, gloves, ear band, chilled
39 foggy, calm, ls tee, shorts, gloves, earband, good
44 foggy, 9:00 a.m., Katy Trail, ls tee, shorts, earband, good
50 but cooling, misty, tee, shorts, kinda chilly
30 clear, 9:00 a.m., ls tee, tights, earband, gloves, good
43 clear, ls tee, shorts, earband, good
38 clear, south breeze, ls tee, shorts, gloves, earband, chilly
22/wc13, north wind, ls tee, tights, vest, gloves, hat, painfully cold
25/wc 14, south wind, ls tee, vest, tights, sweats, gloves, gaitor, hat, much 45 at the start, 25 at the end, ls tee, tights, hat, gloves, vest, still too cold
37 w/c 27 sunny, mid morning, ls tee, tights, ear band, gloves, warm at the end

YMMV. I don't think I'm particularly warm or cold blooded. All these were step out the door, five minute walk warmup and run. I'm worried about step out the door and wait.

Mmmm, duct tape.

As you are not used to the cold I would say no.
I'm in Fl and have been wearing my UA cold gear top every day with layers on top!!!!!
I konw its $$$$ but I would really recommend geting some cold gear clothes, I'm sure other brands have there own version, shop around, or you could leave it until you get here and go to the UA outlet store.

You might consider going to Goodwill or Salvation army to look for some sweats or something you can discard down the road....depending on how warm it is going to be. You just never know. For the half, I'll probably wear some tights under some looser capris. For the full, I'll probably just wear some capris with some throw away sweats, if needed.

I tend to get really warm. I did a 16-mile walk last Monday. At the start, the temp was in the upper 20's. By the time I finished, the temp was in the upper 30's, low 40's. I started out with a long tech shirt, a short-sleeved tech shirt on top of that, a light windbreaker jacket and a large, men's flannel shirt on top of that. The flannel shirt came off after a few miles. The windbreaker came off after about 12 miles. I was fine for the rest of the walk. For my head, I wore a head band that covered my ears. I also wore some cheap garden-type gloves. The gloves came off around mile 4. My friend wore some glove liners under her gloves. Once she discarded the gloves, she kept on the liners and said that worked really well for her.

Thanks for all the replies! Looks like tights it is for sure. I think I will bring my cold weather running jacket as well. I will just have to tie it around the waist if I warm up. Better to be safe than sorry. I'm covered with the throw away layers for the waiting around. I bought some cheap sweats. I might even wear them during the race until I warm up. Only thing is I will have to cut the bottoms off as they are way to long!

I think I will also buy a race bib belt so I don't have to worry about wear I place it. Gotta love the DIS and all the great tips!:goodvibes

Okay, on the tights...do you wear them with or without underwear? I usually go without in my running skirt, and certain shorts that have liners.

Thanks!

From the book of do as I say not as I do - you really should not run in a new anything. OK what I did. Last year I was nursing a small tear of the insertion of the Achilles into the soleus (calf). I had a warmer pair of CW-x tights but I knew they would be too warm for the full last year. I pruchased a set or their ventilator tights for the full and was OK. I did launder the tights twice with no soap to make sure they have no wierd chemical in them. Note there is alway a chance of chafing and I had one hot spot post race. Lube at seams if you do not have a lot of miles on the equipment.

I will wear a longsleeved tech shirt and a short sleeved shirt over it. For the start and the trip to MK I will wear a throw down cotton long sleeved tee I got the other night. If windy it will be donated at mile 10.

A sweatshirt and sweat pants will work pre-start. Make sure to cut slits in the pants so they can be pulled over shoes.

I'm worried about my feet while we wait. The mesh over my toes is porous - as it should be, but dang my feet can get cold in there. Has anyone used plastic grocery bags? Just something to stop the air until we start.

Ronda

I would urge caution with bags as they will not allow any of the foot to sweat and breath. You may start running in soggy socks and shoes. I really like the Duct taps thing but just over the forefoot. That will allow the foot to breath and moisture to evaporate.

added - don't forget you hands and ears. ALso, something for over the head pre-race is a great idea

Cold is it!

National Weather Service:

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Northwest wind around 10 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 55. Northwest wind around 10 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 34. Northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 56. Northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph.

That's perfect running weather! No rain gear, no tights, just some throw-away sweats for before the start and either a vest or long sleeves for the runs themselves. :)

I'm disappointed I didn't think of duct tape. Yes, it's just the open part of the vamp that's so breezy.

Okay, I'm sleeping in the car with duct tape on my shoes. I'm set.

Perfect for you......freezing to me. :lmao:

Forcecasts have dropped with a front prediction firming up and a smaller chance of wet.
The three forecasts continue to align. It looks like a cold half and full.

Thu-Mon...temperatures briefly modify Thursday-Thursday night as return flow sets up ahead of approaching frontal boundary. A small pop is expected Thursday night-Fri. The 00z European model (ecmwf) was slower in the passage of the next cold front but the GFS looks a little more consistent from run to run so have not deviated much from guidance...or our current forecast.

The air mass behind this front looks like it could be as cold as the current one...since it originates well up in Canada and the high pressure center will be near 1050mb. The high will drop south out of Canada and through the plains while slowly weakening over the Gulf of Mexico/Florida early next week. Needless to say...temperatures will continue well below normal and we could be dealing with the threat of a freeze next weekend.
