Marathon Weekend Weather - version 2011

Did a 10 mile run today in a long sleeve and shorts here in DC. It was high 40s but drizzling. So the long sleeve was more about keeping the rain off. If its high 40s at the start I'll go shorts and shirtless. Low 40's I'll bring a shortsleeve that I'll lose on the course and a longsleeve or something at hte start to toss. Would really depend on wind.

I would also go shirtless, but that would just be wrong in so many ways for me and the people who would have their vision scarred as I jiggle, I mean jog by. :rotfl2:

I'm planning on wearing shorts, a tank and a long-sleeved tech shirt over that. My legs don't tend to get cold as much as my arms and hands. I figure if I get too warm, I can take the long sleeved shirt off and tie it around my waist.

I ran three miles today. It was 52 degrees with a 17 mph wind. I wore a lightweight long sleeve tech shirt and running pants and I was a little too warm. I was miserable cold when I walked down the driveway but 1 mile in, I knew I had overdressed -- which is always my downfall. I think I'm going with either capris and a short-sleeve shirt for race day or capris and a long sleeve lightweight tech shirt. I might opt for the short sleeves and arm warmers.

It definitely looks like the 40’s are the temps to prepare for. The wind is the largest variable in the current forecasts with neither the Weather.com nor the NWS forecasting a wind above 10 MPH and the other two with a higher wind.

*FR = Feel Real Temp, the way a temp feels taking into account wind and humidity

I guess I'm a little concerned about the Real Feel temp in the Accuweather forecast. I walk/jog the race, at about a 3:2 ratio, and I'm worried that I will be chilled during the walking portions. I like the idea of wearing capris, but I don't own any and don't want to try something new on race day. I have a pair of running pants, but once I wore them when the weather was in the 50's and definitely got too warm. Thought about wearing a pair of sweats over shorts and just shedding them if I got too warm.

As far as the top goes, it will be a short sleeve shirt with a throwaway shirt over the top. I'm sure as the sun comes up, I'll be plenty warm enough in that respect.

This is exactly my plan as well. But I will also need gloves. My hands are always cold!!

Obviously, you will make the final call but here is my read on the weather....

You will need to have pants and a long sleeved shirt/jacket prior to heading to the corrals. The outer layer on top and bottom would get checked. I am of the opinion that a nice large black trash bag, while making a fashion statement, also serves as a great wind block on the 0.6 mile walk to the corrals and the wait for your wave to start. Once your wave is released, tossing the sack over the fence and heading off into the race will warm you in a hurry. Most likely, keeping a throw down long sleeved shirt on the top up to MK will help with the wind. Shedding the shirt at the uturn at Space Mountain will have gotten you to the northern point of the course. From there, it is down wind and you will more than likely never feel the sting of the chill. I am thinking that the throw down shirt will get tossed within a couple miles of the start, even with the wind.

One other nugget, I am not sure if you are running the half or full.... If full, and you feel like tossing the overshirt in Epcot, keep it until you get to mile 4 and are back out in the open and in the wind.

Another suggestion instead of a trash bag is one of the cheap $1 emergency rain ponchos. They are essentially a trash bag but have head and arm holes so it is a little easier to deal with then putting holes in trash bags.

Once at WDW, you will see the size of the bag given for gear check. That is what you will need to stuff everything into - it is not large, i would say equivalent to a grocery store plastic bag.

NOVICE here- I'm guessing my sweatshirt will not fit? I am chronically cold, and can't imagine standing around pre-start without it!
(And yes, this is my first race- 5K- ever, so bear with me.)

I would say a sweatshirt and sweatpant will fit nicely along with a couple other not so bulky items. It may be a stuffing effort but yes, it will fit.

If it's the size of a grocery-store plastic bag - or the bags they used at the NYC Marathon this year - unless your sweatshirt is the size of some puffy coats I've seen, it should roll up and fit in just fine.

Or just do what I'm planning and find one you don't mind parting with to wear and then toss at the start.

Thanks for the insight. I did shed my sweat pants near Space Mountain last year, but I had tights on underneath. I'm sure that the tights would be too warm this year. Do you agree? If I understand you correctly, you are suggesting shorts with long sleeve throwaway shirt and garbage bag (aka Poor Man's goretex) for the start. By the way, I am doing the half.

That's all I will have....

But I will also have a pair of gloves for the hands. If they are warm I find that I can toss the overshirt early.

With the wind and temps in the 40's a pair of stability type tights would not be overly warm, in my opinion. I have a couple pair of CW-x tights and have worn the 'regular' style with temps into the upper 50's lower 60's....

I will have them on the trip and will defer my decision on shorts/tights until race morning; but leaning to shorts currently

I'm going to pull what I always pull... pack a running skirt for the event, and then end up running in the lululemon yoga capris that I wore on the plane there. :lmao: I even wore them for the marathon last year after having a wardrobe malfunction with my tights during the half (meaning that I ran with them for almost all my long runs, but I always had my Gu in my hydration belt... when I put the Gu in the pocket of my tights during the half, I was pulling my tights up every 2 minutes, and I was going to have twice as much Gu (obviously) for the full as for the half.... so my nice expensive running tights got replaced with my (also very expensive) comfy yoga pants that I sleep in some days).

Anyway, that's my roundabout way of saying to plan plan plan, but have a back-up. :lmao:

I like how the temps are looking right now... but it could be just a smidge warmer on 5K day. I'm registered in the "stroller division" and my little guy doesn't handle even mild cold very well. If it's going to be mid-high 40s, he may get left with his dad that morning.

The way the weather is looking now, I think I will run in my running skirts with maybe a pair of capri's under them. It will mostly depend on if it is windy. We are having similar weather here in No FL and it is chilly before the sun comes up. I am still on the fence about sleeves, so I will bring everything and decide morning of. Thinking that the walk to the food court for coffee will be the deciding factor on long or tank or removable sleeves.

Lululemon stuff is so comfy - I buy a lot of their items specifically made for running - that's what I plan on wearing on raceday - either Lululemon shorts or running tights...and run pullover with cuffs that pull over your fingers to keep them warm :)

Great minds think alike! I'm bringing mine along too, and see more of a chance for wearing them during the half than the full. After all, it won't have warmed up much by the time we finish around 730 or 8, and the predicted wind could certainly keep me from overheating. Almost definitely shorts for the full, though.

I  Lululemon! I don't have any of their running gear, but I end up running in their Groove Crops more often than not. I also use them for yoga (duh!), coaching, grocery shopping, hanging out around the house and, yes, occasionally sleeping. I also finally shelled out the money for a scuba hoodie a couple months ago and i'll be living in that thing while in Disney this week.

And don't get me started on their running gloves with the "snot pads" on the side... :rotfl:

I did 8 this morning in temp's similar to what we expect for Sunday. I warmed up fast during the run. I think people doing shorts and short sleeves will be fine. The only thing, I was dealing with 13 - 17 mph winds this morning. Not fun. What's the predicted wind for Sunday?
