Marathon Weekend Weather - version 2011

mid 40's look sooo nice!! so here's my question.. since I am use to running in mid 30's with a long sleeve winter lined turtle neck...
should I still run in a long sleeve but not such a heavy one?? I will run in capri running pants, but wonder if a short sleeve will be too much.. I guess I can layer, but I wonder if a thin long sleeve shirt will be good enough.. its crazy how 10 degrees can make a huge difference...

are you wearing long or short sleeve if the temp stays as the forecast predicts?

Short sleeves. I warm up fast, and mid-40s isn't all that cold for me.

thanks.. that's what I was thinking too.. I'll have a zip up sweatshirt to throw away and sweat pants too.. (will toss those before the race)... I think the long sleeve will be best.. but will bring a short JUST incase.. :thumbsup2

I will be loving 40's. Short sleeves all the way, baby. Today I ran a 5K and it was 60 and muggy and I hated it! And yet, some people were running in full tights and long sleeves - I don't know if they preferred it or if they just didn't check the forecast.

I'm wearing capris too and I'm planning on wearing a lighter long sleeve under my short sleeve and praying it will keep me warm enough. I've been running in 15 - 25 degree weather with a jacket and that was a little too much for me. I'll have a throw away sweatshirt for the start. I think you'd be fine with a lighter long sleeve.

Short sleeves here, also. I will more than likely have gloves for the first few miles but will lose those. I can see where a really light long sleeved tech shirt would be a choice, but I sweat so badly and warm so quickly that a long sleeved shirt is a little much.

You really got to remember that if you are running the marathon you are looking at temps near the high also that you must deal with.

I try to not invoke Galloway but one of the rules of thumb I learned through him was that you really want to feel uncomfortable at the start. That has been such a great rule of thumb and has only put me in the incorrect clothing once.

Here is a neat little tool to help with decisions..

Ran a 5k in a singlet and shorts last night. Conditions were 58F with a 15-20 mph. I was just on the chilled side pre-race but a quick warm jog fixed that. But there were folks with multiple layers of cold gear out there. I really felt badly for them as they had to wonder why it was so hot while running.

Do you have a long sleeved tech shirt with the cuffs loose enough that you can roll them up? Sometimes if the temp is right on the line between long and short sleeves I start in the long sleeves but roll the sleeves up once I warm up. Just a thought.

If it is 40 I'll start in short sleeves but will probably be wearing a throw away in the corral. Mid or upper 30's and I start in the shirt I described above.

I also love the running sleeves that I got from Nike for that "inbetween" temp decision. I wear then with a short sleeve or sleeveless and slide them down or take them off as needed.

this is a much better discussion that last year and the "what should I wear as layer 6 and 7 just beneath my parka, but it needs to work with my mucklucks and tuuk.

It’s beginning to look like the 40’s are the temps to prepare for. Could use a little less wind but once through MK the wind should not feel like a problem.

woot! Loving the 40s for the start!!

I'm not positive what I'm wearing yet...my suitcase will be filled with stuff that doesn't get worn I'm sure. I've got a couple of long-sleeved shirts I might wear - I can push the sleeves up as necessary - or any number of short-sleeved shirts with arm warmers if necessary. Then take the arm warmers down or off.

Capris definitely on the legs.

I figure with the tops, unless one is SCREAMING at me to be worn, I may just walk outside race morning in both a long-sleeved shirt and then a short-sleeved shirt with or without the arm-warmers and see what feels best.

Starting to pack....wow. When did race day get so close??

So with temps in low 40s at start (which is what I run in now when I run indoors) - I'm thinking capris (as others have posted) and a light long-sleeve shirt w/ a throwaway sweat pants and sweatshirt for corral waiting. I figure it will be high 50s or so when we finish (around 5-5:30 time) so if I do get warm I can roll up the shirt. :)

Looks like temps are going to be mid-to-high 60s for our entire time there, only one day currently forecast as rain (which is Monday - of course, the day we're going to the parks!). As we've been dealing with all 30s and below for the past 1.5 months, this is going to be a SERIOUS heat wave!! I'm thinking I'll have to pull out my capris to wear during the day.

Today's 12 mile long run was good practice for what the forecasts show for Disney next weekend. We started at 6am at 35 degrees and finished two hours later at 40 degrees. I wore my new compression tights just to see how they felt and break them in, a long sleeve top, and a light jacket. As expected, the jacket was good while standing around before the run and for the first mile or so, way too hot after that. The tights felt great but also very warm. I'll bring them with me but doubt I'll be wearing them. Nice to have a chance to wear them and make sure they fit right, though.

One thing to keep in mind for next weekend is what you're going to pack in your bag to wear after the race. We had several people in our training group today who were fine in their long sleeves and shorts while running but started shivering once we finished and were hanging around afterwards. Be sure to pack something to keep you warm in the finish area. The sweat and moisture evaporating off you once you stop moving will make you very cold very quickly, even with the sun shining.

Question about what to put in the bag for after the race -

I'm a sweathog - there's no doubt about that. I doubt that I'll have a chance to full change (IE, out of my sports bra and underwear) in the middle of post-race activities....I assume it's still helpful to put clean/dry pants/sweatshirt into the bag though? Should I put extra layers into the bag?

Thanks!

Anything that you can layer over will work, even cotton. For me, I fond the Mylar blanket good enough most years. Most likely you will see me post race in my neon blue:cool1: 1980's vintage:cool1: wind suit!:cool1:

Once at WDW, you will see the size of the bag given for gear check. That is what you will need to stuff everything into - it is not large, i would say equivalent to a grocery store plastic bag.

And those mylar blankets work great to keep you warm in the morning too. :)

Having just gotten in from a jaunt to Trader Joe's with temps in the mid-40s, I'm leaning now towards one of my short-sleeved shirts with arm warmers for the first little bit. I know me and how I tend to warm up quickly, so as much as I like my long-sleeved shirts, I'm thinking I'll be miserable by the end of the race if I wear one of them. I'll pack them just in case, but I'm thinking they'll stay in the bag.

I'm just glad that running gear (other than shoes) rolls up so little! I don't want to check a bag at all!!

I can't wait for some warmer weather. It was -9 degrees this morning in CO. I'm waiting for it to get to +10 soon to go for my run.

Did a 10 mile run today in a long sleeve and shorts here in DC. It was high 40s but drizzling. So the long sleeve was more about keeping the rain off. If its high 40s at the start I'll go shorts and shirtless. Low 40's I'll bring a shortsleeve that I'll lose on the course and a longsleeve or something at hte start to toss. Would really depend on wind.

Just got in from my run and have decided that while I will throw the long-sleeved shirt in the bag just in case it will be short-sleeves and MAYBE arm warmers. The temps here were around the same as the forecasts are predicting, and I felt like while running I was too hot in the long-sleeved shirt, even pushing the sleeves up. I'd much rather err on the side of being slightly chilly than overheating.

For after, I'll throw a hoodie in my bag - and if my shirt's drenched, I have mastered the art of taking off a shirt without removing the outer one. :P Woot!!

Did a resolution run 5k yesterday and just got back home from a 6k. The weather was -24 C and -19 C respectively. At this point, I think I'll be more worried about rain during the half marathon more than anything else.

I'll just pack one of everything and I'll dress up accordingly.
