Marathon Weekend 2027

On the thought of DNS being "wasted bibs" (I disagree with that thought) it wouldn't surprise me one bit that Disney has a very very good data on what % of folks DNS and adjusts the bib count up a bit to compensate for that.

And even completing a previous race doesn't mean you make it to the start line. I have DNS races I have done in the past due to injury, and when your looking at a population of 16,000+ runners life is gonna happen to some of them. Very very unrealistic to expect everyone to make it to the start line that signs up.
And I imagine destination races like Disney also have a percentage of DNS through no fault of the runner at all (not that injuries are a runner's fault) because runners don't control the weather or the flight cancellations

Wow!! I haven’t had any problems like that with any of my Goodrs. I’ve run with them in my leggings pocket and in my waist pouch, and shoved them in various purse pockets, and all my lenses are perfect.

My first pair didn’t have the reflective coating, and has been through the washing machine with only slightly rusted temple screws to show for it. The other pairs with the cool looking coating all end up scratched if used for their intended purposes. It’s gotten to meme level on the running internet.

They HAVE?! Okay, I will need to check them out at SS then. Was it just one specific design/color way, or a whole line?
This is the one I bought: https://goodr.com/collections/cheetah-g/products/stealth-mode-supreme

Their lens height is much shorter than other Goodrs I’ve tried, which I need to avoid glasses resting on my cheeks and getting shoved down onto my nose by my hat/visor. They’re also super sassy, which I love! Too bad my vision is blurry in them lol!

~~~
On the sunglasses topic, I’ll throw an unpaid plug here for Tifosi, a brand from which I’ve bought 5 different pairs of sport sunglasses over the years and they remain my favorite, most comfortable glasses of all. If they offered bifocals (I cannot do progressives), I’d pony up the cash to get Rx Tifosi’s made.
I started debating a split stay in the last week (during our 6-day weekend thanks to 4 snow/weather days that sandwiched the weekend) and am wondering if this is truly a DVC pipe dream: Is a BC studio possible to get at 7mo?
Definitely possible, though you'll probably need to waitlist. The Monday night is a VERY good chance, Sunday a little more tricky, but with a waitlist at 7 months I think you have a good shot.
If I were you, I'd put in the 2 night waitlist, and then a Monday night only waitlist. If the 2 night matches, great. If the Monday night matches, start a waitlist for Sunday night only.
There was some chatter here awhile ago about DNS/DNF and I forget the split but DNS was the much higher number. I think underestimating the training is part of it (there was just someone over on Reddit asking if they could do Dopey in 2027 after starting a couch to 5k plan three *weeks* ago 😵‍💫) but you also have transportation issues, budget issues, injury, emergencies, etc. There are a lot of reasons someone would have to bail and I think this being a destination race as opposed to your local half or full impacts things.
The person posting about requiring proof of another marathon to run this one was ridiculous and they got lit up over it. I don’t even know if that thread is still there.
If heard garbage like that in the past. I remember reading a running forum years ago saying if you can’t finish a marathon in under 3 hours that you shouldn’t be allowed to enter because it “endangers” the “serious runners.” If you’re running 3 hours there’s not really much to worry about as far as people being in front of you. The story below fits into this topic. Apparently at The LA Marathon they allowed runners to call it quits at 18 miles because of the heat. People are upset because they still received medals. However, their official race times show that they did not in fact finish the complete race. I don’t have a problem with people receiving the medal, and I agree with how they handled the time. This brings me to a question I have about this years rD Marathon. If you were one of the runners that ran the shortened course, does your official time note that it was an abbreviated race? I was early enough that I did the full 26.2, but I would be a tad upset if someone is showing a faster time because they ran a shorter distance.
I can’t speak to any other years, but for 2019 when they cut the course, no, it was not indicated in the official time.
I think part of the DNS challenge is Disney makes us sign up so far in advance and doesn’t offer deferrals or insurance. Maybe you get a partial GC depending on who responds to your email. I DNS the Disneyland Half this year. It’s the first Rundisney race I’ve DNS and I’ve done over 20. I’ve been running 15 years and somehow have managed to never get injured. I would never have thought when I signed up for Dumbo last year that I would end up with a stress fracture and be unable to run. I felt terrible that I had taken the spot from someone that wanted to be there, but I also had a dumbo bib and was able to do the 10k.
I love that Disney motivates folks to get out & exercise. However, I do think it would be beneficial if they required all marathon participants to submit proof of completing another race. I’m totally okay with that race being a 5K. It just needs to be something that shows that person has done something.
The marathon is a tough event and a lot of first timers underestimate it. I know that I did. Couple that with all the “influencers” sharing how they completed Dopey without training, and Disney gets a lot of undertrained folks.
All that said, these undertrainees don’t impact my race so I’m not that invested in this topic. They’re the ones who have to pay the price (physically & financially). I’d probably be more bitter about folks signing up with no intent to train if I didn’t get registered 🫣
Just follow @FFigawi wherever he goes.
I’ve noticed a lot of bitter, elitist gatekeeping like this going on with respect to any race that sells out. I think it’s partially a sign of the times - there are angry, entitled people with lots of forums to post garbage opinions.
Running in general is so popular right now and people want to run popular races - Disney, NYC, Chicago. And there are many avenues to get in. So, obviously, some people aren’t going to get in. Unfortunately, I think resentment and jealousy lead to lashing out against charity runners, lottery runners, “slow” runners, etc.
That’s all BS of course. If you get in, you get in and you deserve to be there. My medal finishing at 18,750 counts the same as the finisher at 300.
People with a problem can eat sh*t.
I have a theory on these runners. They’re obviously genetically gifted to be able to run that fast and that efficiently, and up until this running boom, they’ve been able to get their external validation by doing the “big” marathons. Now with the running boom, these runners have competition for the first time, can’t get in to their big goal race, and cannot accept it gracefully because they’ve never had to accept failure before. These marathons have made up their own ratings, ie Abbot World Majors, and are extremely selective, which drives up demand.
It’s like when you started the college application process. Remember the selective/more selective/most selective system? Colleges and universities created that system, applied it to themselves, and watched as the Type A students drove themselves ragged to get in to the most difficult/selective schools to get accepted. It didn’t matter if these schools were any good. They applied a phony system to themselves and watched the bloodbath.
I didn’t know the finish through WS is no more. What’s the route now at the end?
Do the 5k or 10k include it at the start? I loved running among the torches in the dark.
All of mine are reflective coating ones, I don't know why I'm so lucky to not have issues
5k and 10k are more or less the same, they make small adjustments but the core of it is Epcot loop for 5k, Epcot loop plus area resorts for 10k.
(At least one year they did something different with the 10k and gave us a small route to HS but that hasn't happened for at least the last two years)
In 2025 they made a curious change to the full: they moved the start time earlier, to 4:30, and the bigger loop of Epcot would happen at the BEGINNING of the race. They also extended the time we spend in MK, which is great, and that’s how they sold this change, but it became very obvious that a major part of this change was to reduce the time everyone spends in the parks during opening hours. Epcot and HS are cleared out half an hour earlier than they had been, and most of World Showcase isn’t impacted by the race. I think you enter at the same area but you go the opposite direction and miss most of WS.
I get it from the perspective of the parks. It’s a bit dangerous having to manage the parks guests and athletes, guests have to navigate around the course kinda carefully, and there are a few points where its difficult to cross. But it kinda stinks for the athletes. It was cool to have that last mile be a full loop, get a drink from wherever you wanted as long as it was open, etc. Some of the guests on the sides would be happy to see us and cheer us on but I guess some weren't.
I'm still mad that they made that change the year I did my first Dopey/Marathon--I was really looking forward to picking up a margarita to cross the finish line with.
However, I do think it would be beneficial if they required all marathon participants to submit proof of completing another race.
Unfortunately, people could still work around it. People use bib mules for PoT (have someone else run a race with a bib registered under the name). Tbf, though, someone new to running would probably not really understand how to do this bc they are likely to not understand how bibs work lol
On the thought of DNS being "wasted bibs" (I disagree with that thought) it wouldn't surprise me one bit that Disney has a very very good data on what % of folks DNS and adjusts the bib count up a bit to compensate for that.
It's the same thing rental car companies and airlines do. They count on a certain percentage of their reservations not showing up, and if they do, that's when you end up without a car even though you reserved, or with an offer to bump yourself off a flight.
This brings me to a question I have about this years rD Marathon. If you were one of the runners that ran the shortened course, does your official time note that it was an abbreviated race?
I was behind the course cut at the 2020 marathon and there was no indication in the results. That said, they only cut about 1.5 miles, and between the pre-race security, weaving on the course, and post-race chute, I was well over 26.2 anyway.
