Marathon Weekend 2027

To complicate things further, I am looking at the D23 list of Disney films. This includes Touchstone films and Hollywood Pictures films. The, potentially very confusing, twist is that it also includes all of the Marvel films produced after Disney acquired Marvel. Meaning films post-2012, basically starting with the original Avengers, are Disney live-action films and not “acquired” as they were produced when the company was already owned by Disney. This extends to all of the Lucasfilm newer Star Wars films as well.

This does not affect my list for Bracket 4, but may change others.

I interpreted it as the IP was acquired rather than the films themselves...but maybe that's the wrong way to do it

Yes! And not just because it's going to be on my list

It shows up on both Wikipedia and IMDBs list of Disney Studios pictures so I think it's fair game!

ETA: It's on the D23 list as well.

I don’t think there is a right way or wrong way to do it; the way Disney has structured things over the years makes things pretty muddy when it comes to Bracket 3 and 4. All in good fun no matter what ends up in the final bracket and where.

I'm going to wait until we get proper adjudication on this before posting my list (which is still in flux). Will see when @camaker or @Novatrix weigh in.

My understanding based on the discussions last week was that all acquired IP was fair game for bracket 4 - including original trilogy SW and Indy as well as the Aliens franchise. I don't know about bracket 3 but I limited myself to films released by Disney and not any of the sub labels.

(Yes, the last bracket was super easy for me. I would have put RotJ as number one, since it’s my favorite movie of all time, but I do think Empire is the better film. And I think it has a better chance of winning. )

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to Sundays Are For Disney (SAFD) March Movie Madness! In year's past, we've crowned our favorite WDW attractions and restaurants in our very own elimination tournament. This year we're going to pick our favorite Disney movie. This is the second weekend populating our brackets by listing out favorites in these categories:

1. Disney Animation (including Don Bluth films now owned by Disney)
2. Pixar Animation
3. Disney Live Action (Ex. Mary Poppins, Pirates of the Caribbean, live action remakes, Old Yeller, Parent Trap, 2,000 Leagues Under the Sea, etc.)
4. Disney Acquired Live Action IP (Ex. Star Wars, Avengers, Aliens, the Muppets, Indiana Jones, etc.)

Today's SAFD is what are your top 3 movies in categories 3 & 4 in order? We'll start the knock outs next weekend. Please don't add extras to or have ties in your list. I have to score all the answers out to ensure we get the best match ups possible and that makes it much harder to do. Let the games continue! ETA: If there are any questions about what does or does not count in the categories, I'll leave it to @Novatrix to adjudicate.

I'm still going to leave final decisions to @camaker, but my differentiation of Category 3 and 4 are as follows.

Category 3 – Disney Live Action
Disney was the studio that originally developed the film version of the story, whether it was an original idea or an adaptation. All Touchstone films count in this category, as it was always Disney owned.

Example: Newsies counts as Category 3 because it originated as a Disney film, and was produced by Disney theatrical prior to filming.


Category 4 – Disney Acquired Live Action IP
Disney did not originate the film franchise, they acquired the rights later. Films count in this category even if they were produced before or after acquisition.

Examples:
All Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Alien, Marvel films, and live-action movies from the Fox catalog.

For example, Hamilton falls under Category 4 because Disney only acquired the filming and distribution rights long after the stage production already existed, and were not producers on the stage production.

Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken can replace either Newsies or Fivel, depending on which category it belongs in. It was made by Silver Screen Partners, and that shows up as "Disney" currently, but I'm not sure if that was an acquisition or not. It is my #1 in either category because much like the Canadian production of all of the Anne of Green Gables books, my cousins and I watched this basically on repeat.

OK. So Fivel is out. Ferngully? Nope. Disney didn't get that one either.

I can't use Princess Bride either? Boooooooo! Booooooo! Boooooooo!

I supposed I can't use the Miles Morales animated Spider-man movies either?

Well... this definition really messes up my list even though I can't really argue against the logic.

Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken was produced by Disney and distributed by Buena Vista, so definitely Category 3. An American Tail is animated, however, so I don't think it fits in the live action acquired IP category.

Edit: It may or may not have been part of the Don Bluth acquisition, it's just my understanding is that Category 4 is only acquired Live action films and Fievel is animated.

The winter weather (mainly the snow) has tracked north, so we are not getting the bulk of it. What are we getting? Rain. Sleet. And ice. The NWS is already saying the we may get a half inch or more of ice accumulation on tree branches and power lines. School is already cancelled for tomorrow. The worst of it isn't supposed to hit until late tonight/early tomorrow so we'll see how bad it is in the morning I guess.

Technically, Disney has the streaming rights to The Princess Bride, but neither they nor 20th century fox own the IP as that's part of the Goldman estate. @The Expert, if you want to take this as your opportunity to sub in Muppets Christmas Carol or another film....

I limited myself to one per franchise and really debated between Rogue One and Empire. If this was limited to films made after Disney acquired the IP this would have been #1 for me.
