Back home today. We had a great week. More for time spent with family than anything else. Quick thoughts:
My wife and I arrived from CT on 12/28. We stayed offsite and I worked remotely through 1/7. Weather was warm and beautiful up to 1/6. My adult daughters arrived 1/7 when it turned cold and we moved to a one bedroom at Animal Kingdom Jambo. My wife and I have annual passes and come 3-4 times a year and usually take it easy. My 25 and 28 year old daughters had been to Disney every year since they were 5 and 8 but had not been since 2020. So they wanted to do a lot more than just the running. Unfortunately, I got sick on the Monday before they arrived and dealt with something the entire week including the races. But I powered through. I am just feeling better today.
When you consider how much money I spent this week, ironically, if you think about it, the races, which seem REALLY expensive are actually a pretty good bargain in today’s Disney universe. You get quite a bit of bang for your buck. Especially if you ride rides during the marathon (which my younger daughter did) and enjoy the characters.
As for the races themselves:
5K/10K – I did these with my wife and we had great couple’s costumes. We were on the runDisney
Instagram reel for the 5K. The 10K took us over 2.5 hours as we stopped at all the characters. My older daughter did the 5K with us the younger daughter the 10K. The cold weather didn’t really bother us since we ran/walked so slow and just kept our warm clothes on for the corral and run.
The half I did by myself. Loved the warmer weather in the corral. I ran at my normal slow 10 minute pace and stopped for just about all the characters.
The full – I did the full with both daughters. It was my 7th full marathon and my first ever with a temp below 55. Just perfect running weather. Too bad I still felt sick or perhaps I could have PR’d.
I started in the corral by somehow losing one of my earbuds so I had to run the race with one which I have never done - nothing new on race day, right? I live for running with music so this was a bigger bummer than most people would think.
And then to finish it off, I tripped on the boardwalk at mile 25 and face planted. Considering I am 56 years old, I felt pretty lucky that I was able to get up and finish the run. Also, lucky it happened at mile 25 and not mile 1 and also lucky I did it on the boardwalk and not asphalt. I was only a little scraped up as opposed to being bloody if I fell on pavement.
Everything in between was fantastic. My only time goal was to break 4 hours which I did at 3:54.04. I also stopped for 22 character/icon photos. I did the last Star Wars race in 2019 and was so excited to see the Battle of Endor section. Especially since it was still dark when I arrived.
My oldest daughter completed her first ever marathon while my youngest set a new marathon PR even though she also stopped for 20+ characters and rode Everest. I am so proud of both of them!!
My wife and I are doing Springtime Surprise and our annual passes expire in March, so I am planning to renew this year and most likely will be in for Dopey #5 next January. But I may be taking a break after that. I guess we will cross that bridge in 15 months…
