Marathon Weekend 2025

It's 21.5 hours (1385 miles) to drive from my home in northern Vermont to Bay Lake Tower. I suppose I could just pick up every DIS runner along the way for one giant carpool or caravan!
Now that would make for some epic sing-a-longs!

Just as long as no one brings up the half costume theme..... 🎼It's a small world after ALLLLLL🎵:duck:

I originally planned to fly out on Tuesday evening, but after all of the recent travel fiascos and weather risks in January, I decided to change my flight to Friday night. Funny how these runDisney trips get more expensive so quickly, even with an AP. Now I just hope there will be a room discount for those extra nights since it will be between New Years and Marathon Weekend (no bounce back discount sadly) :rotfl:

Wait for me!

ETA: I can be there in two hours if there is no wait at the border…

Or I will just take a 3h flight and meet you at Disney.

Maybe if things melt down, I'll just drive up and take that same flight! Or who knows? Depending on how the election goes, I may be your new neighbor by then. 😜

DH just had a horrifying thought: What if this weekend’s airlines IT meltdown happened marathon weekend?
Glad we drive.
What a mess that would be. Especially if you are on an airline like Delta, who seems to not be able to figure it out. We plan our flights on the Tuesday of that week just in case something happens. It is about a 15 hour drive from Houston to Disney World. We have made that drive before. Not the most enjoyable drive, but if something were to happen like the meltdown, we would hop in the car and make the drive. The drive home after the marathon would probably be miserable though.

SAFD:
I am scaling back a bit on some races I was planning to do this summer and fall, too much going on in life right now. But I am planning to run the Detroit Marathon at the end of October and then Dopey.

I am following a tweaked Galloway plan for Dopey with some extra miles each week and a designated weekly “speed” workout. Feeling good so far, my base is about 20-25 miles a week. Really looking forward to fall and cooler weather!

We used to always drive for vacation, but ever since we figured out cc points (which a very easy for us to accrue as DH is self-employed) we fly for all of our vacations. Do I miss the 21hr drives to Disney? No. No, no I do not.

The only time we drive to WDW is for MW. Weather can be iffy and we’re usually there for 3 weeks so I like having more comforts from home (not to mention the tote of running crap we bring)

My problem is stalking the DVC website and picking up extra nights on the front or back end because….no flights to change! 😂

SAFD: I kind of casually started training for the fall/winter season at the end of May. My miles have been really inconsistent due to various factors, but I have a great running coach and he has helped adapt my plan as I go. We are calling today week 1, day 1 on my journey to my 2nd Dopey. I am upping to 4 days of running a week (it's been 3 since May) and slowly turning up the heat on some speed work and miles in general. I have numerous checkpoints on the way to Dopey: Disneyland Halloween weekend (all three races), W&D (all three races), and a two-race series for the Dallas BMW marathon weekend (8K + half) in mid-December. Everything seems to be lining up nicely to get me ready for Dopey. I just need to stop making excuses and get out there for every run. The heat in Dallas this summer has not made it easy, but I am ready to get rolling on a consistent basis starting today. Let's go!

The worst part of that drive is how quickly you get through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, only to hit the panhandle & the last state and realize you’re only halfway there.

When I was in college (at UCF in Orlando), I drove to visit my friends at FSU in Tallahassee. It was a four hour drive, which isn't terrible, but OMG I-10 in the panhandle was SO BORING. I was by myself, too, and only had my car radio to keep my occupied. I think I had one of those portable CD players you plugged into the tape deck. :P

Yes! You hit that Florida border on your way over and you start to get excited. Then you look at your GPS and see that you still have about another 7 hours to get to Orlando. Have to break that drive into goals so that you have something short term to look forward to. The next goal after the Florida border is to make it to 75 south.

SAFD: I don’t have any races on the calendar until the MW 10k. That seems a little strange for me, but I’m okay with it. I’m focusing on PT, and trying to strengthen my core. After I had surgery a couple of years ago, I think I tried to come back too soon, so now I’m back to basics for a while.
I am very glad we can get in the car and be at WDW in about 6 1/2 or 7 hours. I would hate to have to worry about flight delays (and overpacking is my MO!). Oh, and it’s not a bad thing at all to go at times when there isn’t a race weekend—the more Disney the better! Our next trip is in September for MNSSHP. Can’t wait!

Add me to the caravan! I usually fly since it's a 2 hour direct flight (that usually leaves at 6am, ugh), but I seem to get sick every time I fly lately so I think I'm going to drive down for Marathon Weekend just to be safe. When you factor in how early I like to get to the airport, plus getting from MCO to my hotel, driving doesn't take all that much longer, but I will absolutely not be leaving my house at 6am if I drive.
