Marathon Weekend 2025

(2 outside - shortened outside due to lightning and then 18 on the treadmill).
:worship: for the treadmill miles. The longest I ever did was 15--and only cause it was at the gym in the winter and I could chunk it into 3x5miles on 3 different TM. How in ever did you manage?
The only race I have between now and MW is the Wine & Dine 5K, which will just be for fun and the Muppet costume (TBD)
See you there! I am not a costume person, but am interested in what you have in mind. A couple that I know are going as the Swedish Chef and a chicken.

That sounds fun! I honestly am having decision paralysis at the moment, but am considering a mashup of sorts -- maybe a Muppet dressed up as a Disney character? Kermit/Tink could be super cute. Or Miss Piggy as a princess or villain.

DH just had a horrifying thought: What if this weekend’s airlines IT meltdown happened marathon weekend?
Glad we drive.

As long as it happens on the back end, I'll ride it out. My mom and step-dad are looking at condos in Celebration... ;)

SAFD: Nothing on the calendar except Dopey! I did 2023 Wine & Dine, Dumbo DD, and Springtime, and I just kept going rolling into MW training. I really like that I only have one big race weekend on my calendar now (and that my next WDW trip in Sept has NO RACES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREVER YAAAAAAY lol).

I want to keep it up since I'm spending 2 weeks in Japan in November and that's gonna dent my training plan - though I will be walking a lot, it's not the same. In any case, just slogged through 7 gross, humid, slow, icky miles today
You are going to go to WDW with no races?

Did that recently. It is going to feel... unsettling. It is hard to explain, like a phantom FOMO.

Just saying....

SAFD: The only thing I'm planning for MW right now is spectating the full, but I just finished week two of training for the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October. So far, so good! Should be a busy and very sweaty summer/early fall 😂
Good luck in the MCM and hope you have slightly better weather than last year. But it is a cool race.

SAFD: I’m both training and not training at the same time - I call it Schrödinger's Training Plan. :rotfl: Summer in FL is just survival mode for me: trying to balance my need and desire for exercise with heat stroke avoidance. Instead of doing a 2-week mileage-building cycle, I’m on a weekly cycle with 2 40-45 minute runs, a 6-mile long run, a day for alternating speed work/hill repeats/indoor cycle HIIT, and 2 days of ST+yoga. At some point, I’ll go to a 2-week cycle and start building the long runs before W&D Half.

Full truth, though? I’m really, really happy running less mileage. My body feels SO much better and I find I’m running faster with less effort on the regular. Maybe it’s just the summer heat - we’ll see when it cools off someday.

SAFD: I am just starting my Dopey training after getting my knee cleaned out last month. I am trying hard to balance catching up to were I'd like to be on my training and not over taxing my knee, along with my PT sessions.
I have a local 5k in a couple weeks were I need to weigh wether or not I can push for a time I'd be happy with or just going and enjoying the fact that I am ABLE to race.
After that I have Cow Harbor 10k in September and then just focusing on Dopey.

SAFD: I really never stop training, just adjust mileage depending on weather and events. I have been training for my first sprint triathlon. So my running miles are down a little as I have added in swimming and biking. After this event, I will decided if I want to continue down the route of doing triathlons and eventually an Iron Man event.

I do have a 10 mile race schedule for October and a 10k race on Thanksgiving. Thinking about adding a half marathon in November/December also. But definitely as we get into the fourth quarter, running miles will pick up to get ready for Dopey.

When we went for DD's birthday last September, I told DH the same thing. That is was incredibly weird to be at Disney and not be there for races and 2am wakeups. I got a solid eye roll. :rotfl2:

SAFD: I am currently training for Dopey. I am currently doing a Higdon half marathon plan that ends mid-September and then jumping into his Dopey training plan. We've had a heat wave here in Virginia for what feels like a month straight so a lot of my runs are on the dreadmill. The only advantage to this is that my treadmill runs are so much faster than outside runs because it's in an air conditioned basement instead of the swamps of Mordor outside 😆 I can't wait for fall training.

Glad we drive.

During the Christmas 2022 Southwest meltdown, I have to admit to finding out how long it would take me to drive from Buffalo to Orlando, just as a back-up plan.

But, can you even imagine the horrors when people would be showing up for the 5K without being able to get to the Expo to pick up their bibs.

I can't remember which race weekend it was, but there was one where the line for the "emergency bib pick-up" was insane due to widespread flight issues. It has happened.

The brilliant thing about being on the East Coast, it won't be fun, but I KNOW I can drive there as a worst case scenario. Just need to find a good audiobook and cruise down I-95. (Typically can make it in one 17.5 hour shot including breaks/fill-ups if I leave after dinner from NJ.)

We actually had an operator once do a one way car rental from Miami to NJ because of a hurricane preventing flights from leaving.

SAFD:
Currently getting back into training for the Chills and Thrills challenge at Disneyland and then Berlin marathon at the end of September.

It was going pretty well, then unfortunately I got pretty sick throwing me off schedule for a couple of weeks. The worst part about starting back up again is running again in the high heat and humidity instead of staying in the temp controlled house!

Ha! Yeah, it was a long time on the treadmill. I used to hate treadmill running, but I’m a little more okay with it now than I used to be. I just started a TV show (Friday Night Lights), and just let it keep going until I was finished. I was also doing run/walk, so I was changing the speed every 60 or 30 seconds. I don’t know if that kept me more engaged or not, but I survived! Hopefully, I won’t have to do that many miles on the treadmill again!
Sometimes I go to the Y to run the indoor track (6 laps per mile) if it is storming during a long run, but they don’t open until 6 on Saturdays, and I didn’t want to wait that late to start running.

2022, The year I found what it was like to make the drive - flight was cancelled while we were waiting to board at BDL, got in the truck and went another 1200 miles south. Got in at 4 am, up at 9 to get ready and pickup my dopey bib. After the marathon went to the parks, dinner, bed at 6:30PM up at midnight, record time home to Massachusetts.

Good times…

SAFD never really stop training, running 5 days a week for 30+ miles a week. Ramping up for a marathon the end of August (day after we get home from vaca/DD college) followed by a marathon the end of September, then W&D and finish (or start next year) with Dopey. I may have gone overboard booking races this year.

It's 21.5 hours (1385 miles) to drive from my home in northern Vermont to Bay Lake Tower. I suppose I could just pick up every DIS runner along the way for one giant carpool or caravan!

It’s 23.5 hours from my house (1570 miles) in central MN to Saratoga Springs resort. I don’t foresee myself ever making that drive, especially in winter 😂
