Marathon Weekend 2024

5K: 41 minutes
10k: 48 minutes
HM: 35 minutes
M: 195 minutes
Goofy: 240 minutes
Dopey: 97 minutes

I feel like they throttled the access back for registration for W&D, and that's going to make it take longer for things to sell out than in past year. At least that's my hope (as long as I get an early queue. HAHAHAH!)
I agree and I think it’s for the better. Funneling people through at a slower rate should result in fewer issues with people adding races and not being able to finalize those registrations. Hopefully no payment issues this time.

(I like those estimates too)

As for the races, I had to choose between DL and WDW and went with DL, so I’ll just be an observer for this one.

SAFD: I am aiming for the half for MW (and the challenge for Princess). If it's sold out but the 10K is still open because C2C, I might consider that. I DON'T want to run the marathon because I will barely have recovered from MCM at that point, so if I can't get the 10K or HM on registration day I'll just have to try to snag one when they randomly open up again.

This is only my second time registering for a Disney race, so I have no tips whatsoever. Last time I got really lucky to get a marathon bib because I only used one browser. (I'm sorry! I didn't know any better 🤣)

I mean.....if you DID decide to to the marathon, you could always join the party crew and mostly walk it. ;)

SAFD: Going for Goofy! If that fails then "just" the marathon. Registration day is always so stressful - I work in the medical field, so not a desk job and so if I end up in some queue that takes forever it could really be a problem.
My husband works from home so I will probably have him trying to register me as well just to increase my chances.

Here's hoping we all get what we want!

SAFD:

I’m still hemming and hawing. The Half is the distance that appeals most but I enjoy the courses for the 5k and 10k much more. I’ve seen the artwork and all the speculation and I’m not buying any changes to the courses at this point. The Half course has been basically the same since I first ran it in 2012; I’d be somewhat shocked if they made a positive change to it.

My goal is to remove the stress of Dopey for a year or two and get back to my peak fitness by focusing on smaller short term goals rather than larger long term ones that allow my propensity to procrastinate to pack on the stress and anxiety. I really want to enjoy a Disney race for the first time in a while. I always have a good time because I’m running in Disney World; I want to have a good time because I’m running in Disney World as well. If that makes sense.

The more I think on it I think I am settled on the Half, regardless of the course. The character lines tend to be more manageable for the Half than the 5/10 so it gives a little more options to the type of race experience I want. I might add the 5k or 10k depending on whether my niece and nephew run.

ETA: I’m not worried about getting registered. I’ve never missed getting registered for the races I want and if this happened to be the year I missed out I’d be less disappointed than other years. I’ll get what I get.

Half for me. I'll have a bunch of vm with multiple browsers and when I'm registered shoot any short ones over to a friend trying to register 3 people for Dopey. He will be doing each in their own RD account so I want to help him try to get them all.

SAFD
I'll be doing Dopey for MW24. I'm signed up for Club runDisney Gold membership so I'm not stressed about registration (other than when they forget to send me the link and I have to reach out to them every day). After a year of running several world majors I'm giving all my money to The Mouse for the next year and attempting to run every Disney race for one season.

Anyone have recs for good charities to work with if you don’t get a race you want?
They're all "good" charities. What would make a charity "good" for you?

Some of them have quite a bit higher requirements for the fundraising portion than others if that's a factor to consider.

Editing to add:
A quick look at the charities page on the rD website shows that as examples for Dopey (not all of them indicated if the cost of the bib is included):
DragonMaster is $2100
AT is $2000
ACS(last year) was $2850
MS (last year) was $3500 + $475 bib
Kelsie's Hope Their link takes you to A Running Passion's page is $1200 (includes your bib, has % date-based deadlines with all monies due by 10/1)

Some charities are already out of certain bibs based on social media reports.

Now you've got me doing Disney math. If I sign up for one of those charities, it's practically like if I had paid for Club rD with guaranteed entry right?

Argh I swore I wouldn't give in to FOMO. It's not the end of the world if I don't get in. But argh!

Just thinking about which are the easiest to work with and which have the least overhead so that the money gets spent making a difference instead of lining an admin's wallet...
Ouch. As someone who works for a nonprofit, I just want to point out that the overhead is an essential part of keeping the organization running. Yes, there have been some charity money scandals, but that's really a separate issue. Trying to have super-low overhead can actually have a negative impact on an organization's work. It's kind of like how if you cut calories too much, your performance suffers.

And none of us go into this work hoping to "line our wallets"...

Sell-out Game

I think the days of some of these races not selling out is pretty much over. People were clamoring for a race, any race, and I think a lot of the smaller races closed up during the pandemic. More and more people learned about runDisney, and we're now pretty much stuck. So, unless they decide to bump the price of Dopey to like $1000, we're going to be in waiting rooms for years to come. I just don't see anything ever lasting more than a day, anymore.

We're not in an anniversary year, so that might lessen demand, but the C2C challenge might raise demand. Though I think since the other race has to be in Disneyland, and that's already sold out, some people might have already given up on 2024's C2C

5k: 35 minutes
10k: 40 minutes
half: 75 minutes
full: 120 minutes
Goofy: 75 minutes
Dopey: 40 minutes

Oh I definitely agree and didn't mean to imply that the vast majority of charities aren't doing great work and full of people who truly care a lot. I've just been "encouraged" to work with/donate to a few at my previous jobs that were run to "raise awareness" which meant mainly throwing galas for rich people and then shifting money to the private charity of the CEO or his friends who then award themselves a hefty paycheck or a company car for the trouble.

I doubt that Disney would work with any of those types but there's a non-zero number of tax scams out there at the mid level where there isn't as much scrutiny and I didn't really want to support that type of charity if I could help it.

Quick question about registration. If my girlfriend is running the half, does she have to sign up under her own Disney account or can it be done through mine, since we are both staying on site?
